The invitation stated the event was going to be standing room only. “Think dance party while watching the film.”
And that’s exactly what it was. On Thursday night, Lady Gaga brought a dance party to Nya studios in Hollywood to mark the world premiere of her film “Gaga Chromatica Ball.”
The evening kicked off with a Q&a moderated by Access Hollywood’s Scott Evans. “This was such a special time. This tour went on during a time that people didn’t think that you could. The stadiums were packed all, they were sold out and [people were] all dressed up, dancing and singing,” said Gaga in front of an audience of about 400 guests that included “RuPaul’s Drag Race” stars Gottmik, Sasha Velour and Violet Chachki.

Lady Gaga’s Las Vegas residency promises only two things: Jazz & Piano. But judging from the photos she posted of Thursday’s opening night performance and video that’s surfaced online, it contains so much more.
On Instagram, she posted a photo of herself holding a Broadway-style Playbill with anticipation in her eyes and a photo of Miles Davis (who plays jazz but not piano) blowing his trumpet over her shoulder. When the show was done, she shared another in which she was wearing a shiny tux (bowtie included) and her hairstylist,...

From designer-turned-filmmaker and former creative director Tom Ford to the fashionable family themselves, many have weighed in on House of Gucci, Ridley Scott’s film based on author Sara Gay Forden’s book of the same name that chronicles the sensational murder-for-hire of Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) by his ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) and the glamorous world of the Italian luxury house. Released in November 2021, the MGM film also stars Jeremy Irons as Rodolfo Gucci, Jared Leto as Paolo Gucci and Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci. Salma Hayek and Jack Huston round out the cast. House of Gucci costume designer Janty Yates explained to The Hollywood Reporter that Italian movie star Gina Lollobrigida inspired Gaga’s onscreen wardrobe, while hairstylist Frederic Aspiras (who is also Gaga’s personal hairdresser and wig designer) revealed that he created more than 55 coifs for the Oscar-winning star’s character.

Television creators, actors, directors, executives and diversity and inclusion experts joined Variety on Tuesday for the Changemakers Virtual Summit, dedicated to profiling people making positive social impact in the entertainment industry. Over the course of the day, Variety writers and editors spoke with prominent industry figures about mental health in television storytelling, improving representation both on-screen and off-screen, challenges that diversity and inclusion initiatives can face today and much more.
Here are the eight biggest takeaways from this year’s Variety Changemakers Summit.
‘Normalizing the Marginalized’ Is the Way Forward for Representation
While it’s no individual creator’s job to change the landscape of representation in media, it’s crucial to accept that changing the culture is an aspect of the job, said actor-producer David Oyelowo during the Stereotypes in Storytelling panel with senior awards editor Clayton Davis. Oyelowo specifically elaborated on his experience of being touted as a bastion of “diversity and inclusion,...

Lady Gaga has released the video to “Hold My Hand,” her song from the upcoming “Top Gun: Maverick.”
The video, shot in both black-and-white and color, is helmed by the film’s director Joseph Kosinski. It features Gaga, footage from the new film, as well as clips from 1986’s “Top Gun,” hitting all the right nostalgic notes.
In the video, Gaga sings at a military base as Kosinski intercuts Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is reminiscing. At one point, the video hits emotional notes as Maverick is shown with Anthony Edwards’ Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, holding him as the character dies.
For a portion of the video, Gaga wears a simple white tank, aviator sunglasses and a bomber jacket. Her team including makeup artist Sarah Tanno, hairstylist Frederic Aspiras and creative director Nicola Formichetti are responsible for her look. Formichetti confirmed the jacket belongs to Cruise and worn by the actor in the 1986 original.

Well… Oscar night 2022 was certainly one to remember. Many obituaries will have received their first lines last night, and there’s a few moments that will appear half way down for some of them.
But – here’s the good news: Sian Heder’s Coda won Best Picture, and genuine living legend Troy Kotsur took home the Best Supporting Actor award. It may have been a surprise for some, as Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was hotly favoured. In the second piece of excellent news it was Campion herself who took home the Best Director gong, many would argue it’s long overdue.
Elsewhere Encanto, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain all took to the stage to collect their awards, and it’s pleasing to see another year when the awards were well spread out. It’s a sign of an industry in fine fettle, which is just as well given,...

And the Oscar for most dramatic transformation goes to... Okay, that isn't a real category at the 2022 Academy Awards this Sunday, March 27, but it definitely should be, given the amount of performers who became unrecognizable for their respective roles this year. Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem transformed into comedy legends Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in Being the Ricardos, both earning nominations for their performances, while Jessica Chastain underwent hours in the hair and makeup chair every day to portray televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. Plus, Frederic Aspiras, the artist responsible for Lady Gaga's throwback mane in House of Gucci, became the second Asian...

Lady Gaga may be a multi-hyphenate talent, but even she couldn't have pulled off those major House of Gucci hair looks without the help of a talented team working behind the scenes. Throughout awards season, critics have been buzzing about her portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott's film. And while her acting skills, accent and fashion choices are award-worthy, Gaga's impeccable beauty looks in the film nearly stole the show! In fact, House of Gucci could walk away with the award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 2022 Oscars. For Gaga's longtime hairstylist, Frederic Aspiras, it's hard to express just how much the recognition...

From Lady Gaga to the cast of “West Side Story,” it was the night Tinseltown came to London.
The 2022 Critics Choice Awards hosted a satellite ceremony in the British capital on Sunday night after the omicron variant of Covid-19 forced the show to vacate its initial slot of Jan. 9 and the new March 13 date clashed with the U.K. BAFTA Awards.
With a 10-hour flight and seven-hour time difference meaning attendees couldn’t hotfoot it between ceremonies, the broadcast from the U.K. ensured that nominees including Lady Gaga, Ariana DeBose and Troy Kotsur were able to be in two places at (almost) the same time.
In London, the Critics Choice Awards kicked off at 11 p.m. GMT (4 p.m. Pt), just as the BAFTA post-ceremony dinner was coming to a close, giving guests such as Rachel Zegler and Alana and Este Haim just enough time for a quick outfit change.

Last Updated February 22: The results of the ninth annual Muahs Awards on February 20th stunned most observers with “Cruella” (Disney) “Being the Ricardos” (Amazon), and “Coming 2 America (Amazon) victorious over “Dune” (Warner Bros.) “House of Gucci” (MGM/UA) and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (Searchlight/Disney). “Cruella” and “Being the Ricardos” (which isn’t an Oscar nominee) split period makeup and hairstyling, while “Coming 2 America” took contemporary makeup, hairstyling, and makeup effects.
This certainly shakes up the Oscar race, with “Cruella” now the favorite and “Coming 2 America” suddenly a stronger contender. However, period pieces tend to get greater recognition than contemporary films.
Makeup and hair designer Nadia Stacey did a bit of reverse engineering for creating Emma Stone’s ’70s punk look in the “Cruella” origin story. The idea was to work toward the eventual iconic two-toned black-and-white hairdo, black eyeshadow, liner, and red lips. Stacey...

“Coming 2 America” dominated the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 19 winning all three of its bids. The sequel to the comedy classic won both contemporary awards plus the special make-up prize. The period/character awards went to the makeup of “Cruella” and the hairstyling of “Being the Ricardos.”
This haul positions “Coming 2 America” well for the Academy Awards. In the first eight years of these guild awards, the eventual Oscar winner claimed at least one prize here first. Of its four rivals for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, only “Cruella” came away from here a winner. Both “House of Gucci” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” were bested in all three of their races while “Dune” was a two-time also-ran.

Variety will return to an in-person Artisans Awards ceremony at this year’s Santa Barbara Film Festival, taking place on Monday, March 7 at 8 p.m. at the historic Arlington Theatre. Honoring those nominated for an Academy Award in below-the-line categories, this year’s Artisans Awards highlights those essential to the filmmaking process and who have exhibited the most exciting and innovative work in their respective fields.
“What I love so much about the Artisans Awards and honoring them here at Sbiff, is that this shines a spotlight on those essential to the art of filmmaking and storytelling,” said Variety senior artisans awards editor Jazz Tangcay. “This is their moment to shine and share how they tell a story through their craft and celebrate them. “It’s my first time at the rodeo,” said “House of Gucci” hairstyle artist Frederic Aspiras hours after the 2021 Oscar nominations were announced. Aspiras, a longtime stylist collaborator of Lady Gaga, was nominated alongside prosthetics designer Göran Lundström and wigmaker and hair stylist AnnaCarin Lock for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

In another blow to mass-appealing movies at the Oscars, Academy voters decided to deplete MGM/Uar’s Ridley Scott-directed House of Gucci of all but one nomination, that being for Makeup and Hairstyling.
While adults have been sluggish to return to theaters during the pandemic, House of Gucci broke through, launching over Thanksgiving with a five-day domestic debut of $22M and grossing $53.5M stateside to date and $151.8M global. It has been by far the highest-grossing U.S. drama during the pandemic.

The 2022 Oscar nominees have been revealed, but it’s one name missing from the best actress race that’s generating the most conversation online. Fans were shocked when Lady Gaga failed to earn a nomination for her performance in “House of Gucci.” The nom would’ve been Gaga’s second best actress bid, following her nominated turn in “A Star Is Born,” for which she won an Oscar for original song. This year’s Oscar nominees for best actress are Jessica Chastain for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” Olivia Colman for “The Lost Daughter,” Penélope Cruz for “Parallel Mothers,” Nicole Kidman for “Being the Ricardos” and Kristen Stewart for “Spencer.”

Frederic Aspiras, hairstylist to Lady Gaga in “House of Gucci” has become the second Asian American to be nominated for a Hair and Makeup Oscar.
Japanese-born American special make-up effects artist and visual artist Kazuhiro Tsuji is the only other Asian American to be nominated and win for “The Darkest Hour” and “Bombshell.”
The award was created by the Academy in 1981 after complaints that there was no way to recognize the makeup artists for the 1980 film “The Elephant Man.”
Aspiras, who is of Vietnamese-Filipino descent, also earned a BAFTA nomination last week and is nominated for a Makeup and Hairstylist Guild nomination. This year is all about transformations.
Stellan Skarsgard in “Dune,” Jared Leto in “House of Gucci” and Jessica Chastain in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” all required hours in the makeup chair and daily application of prosthetics for their roles.
At the other end of the scale, Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in “Spencer,” Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin in “Respect,” Lady
Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani in “House of Gucci,” Nicole Kidman in “Being the Ricardos” and Emma Stone in “Cruella” just needed little accents from a winged liner to a straight line or the perfect bold red lip, and even gold lipstick to make subtle statements about their characters.
Here’s an insight into the transformation process.

Lady Gaga’s transformation into Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” is one of the highlights of the awards race, landing the film on the Oscar shortlist in makeup and hairstyling prior to the Jan. 30 bake-off. Should the film earn a nomination, Gaga’s hairstylist, Frederic Aspiras, who is of Vietnamese-Filipino descent and is part of the Oscar shortlisted team, would be just the second Asian American to be nominated in the category.
Japanese-born American special make-up effects artist and visual artist Kazuhiro Tsuji is the only other Asian American to be nominated and win for “The Darkest Hour” and “Bombshell.”
Aspiras, the personal hairstylist to Lady Gaga for more than 13 years, created 52 looks from 10 hero wigs for Patrizia. spoke with Variety about bringing the character to life.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on January 11. Of the 10 films that remain in the running for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, eight are vying for these precursor prizes. “House of Gucci,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “The Suicide Squad” reaped three bids apiece with the guild; “Cruella,” “Dune” and “No Time to Die” earned two each; and “West Side Story” has one.
Two films still in contention at the Academy Awards — “Cyrano” and “Nightmare Alley” — were snubbed by the guild. Conversely, five of the Muahs favorites — “Being the Ricardos,” “Black Widow,” “Don’t Look Up,” “In the Heights” and “The Matrix Resurrections” — didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.

Makeup artist Sarah Tanno has done almost every look imaginable on Lady Gaga, but her biggest challenge came when Gaga signed on to play Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci.”
The actor told her friend and collaborator that she didn’t want to see herself on screen, she wanted to disappear into the role. Tanno created a makeup arc for the character, whose story spans three decades.
What was the starting point for transforming Lady Gaga into Patrizia Reggiani?
It was about dissecting the script in a way — not only did I read it and try to understand her as a person, I went through any kind of documentation looking at photos, videos and interviews.
But there wasn’t a lot of photo evidence of her from earlier years and before her wedding. Freddy [Frederic Aspiras, Gaga’s hairstylist] and I did so much research about her...

Even for a performer known for his physical transformations, Jared Leto reached another level with “House of Gucci.” To play the foolish and ultimately tragic Paolo Gucci in Ridley Scott’s epic drama, Leto underwent hours of makeup and prosthetic work – and the result rendered him so unrecognizable that even costars like Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons weren’t aware they were initially sharing a set with the Oscar-winning actor.
“You have no idea how mind-blowing it is when this guy came in, dressed as Paolo, stood next to me — I was new in Italy — and I thought, ‘Who is this?,’ because he kept calling me ‘Papa!’” Pacino said last year. “Somebody, a sensitive person in the area, said, ‘Al, it’s Jared.’ I swear to you, I bowed to the floor. I remember, I said, ‘You are an inspiration. I can go on now.’”

In the ever-growing list of awards shows, American Cinematheque is throwing its clout behind a new one they call Tribute to the Crafts, an in-person celebration of the artisans behind the scenes who don’t get nearly the attention during the season that their above-the-line colleagues seem to. The ceremony, which will try to rectify this oversight, is set for Wednesday January 26, at the Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
The new show will “honor those who are at the very heart of filmmaking, and have exhibited extraordinary work behind the camera, over the past year.” The evening will celebrate individuals in fourteen categories covering all aspects of filmmaking and will showcase clips from each of their respective films. The audience for this invitation-only event will be composed of members from AMPAS, PGA, WGA, DGA, SAG-AFTRA, BAFTA and Critics Choice.

Tis the Oscar season of expensive movie wigs. Kristen Stewart’s Princess Diana wigs in “Spencer” added $12,000 to the budget, and now “House of Gucci” hairstylist Frederic Aspiras has revealed that Lady Gaga wore $10,000 custom wigs as Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s latest movie. Not only that, but Gaga had over 55 different hairstyles depicted in the film. Ten were custom wigs.
“For my job, it was about being able to use hair as a tool for the actress to really delve into the mind of this person, who she was portraying,” Aspiras recently told The Hollywood Reporter. “So I had to be as authentic as possible by using exact techniques of a 1970s hairdresser — wet set rolls, backcombing, French lacing, spiral perms. I wanted the texture. I wanted the vibe. I wanted the way it moved. Exactly the way it felt. Because it needed to transport you to that time.

Makeup artist Sarah Tanno and hair stylist Frederic Aspiras are the masterminds behind some of Lady Gaga’s most iconic looks.
From the bubblegum pink “Rain on Me” wig and alienesque design to the “The Color of the Pomegranates”-inspired creations for Gaga’s “911” music video, Tanno and Aspiras have been working in tandem at the Haus of Gaga (the name Gaga uses to describe her creative team) for years. But “House of Gucci,” in theaters now, provided them their biggest challenge yet — they needed to strip away the public persona of Gaga and have audiences only see Patrizia Reggiani.
Director Ridley Scott initially wanted just two wigs and one makeup look to carry the story of Reggiani and the Gucci family from the ‘70s to the ‘90s, but Aspiras fought for a range of wigs, including a tight ’80s perm to help age Gaga. Aspiras says, “Ridley said,...

The “House of Gucci” has taken over the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (Fidm) Museum in downtown Los Angeles. Costumes worn by the film’s cast, including Lady Gaga, Adam Driver and Jared Leto were on display, including Lady Gaga’s wedding dress.
On hand opening night were Patrick Starrr, costume designer Janty Yates, Sarah Tanno, makeup artist to Lady Gaga, and Gaga’s hairstylist Frederic Aspiras.
Patrizia Reggiani’s wedding dress worn by Gaga stood front and center of the exhibit. Yates told Variety, “This wedding dress was eight to ten weeks in the making. All the lace was sewn by hand and appliqued.”
In picking the nylon red ski suit that Gaga wears on the ski slope. Yates has been asked, “‘Why did I put her in diabolical red?’ I don’t think it’s diabolical. I thought they were in white, and she’d be in red.

A year after a historic win in this category, the hair and makeup race are again transforming actors playing real-life characters.
