Lexi Alexander will direct the Chris Benoit movie, Crossface.
Lexi Alexander (Punisher: War Zone, recent episodes of Arrow and Supergirl) has signed on as director of Crossface, the story of wrestler Chris Benoit, who murdered his wife and child before taking his own life in 2007.
Jake Goldberger and Sarah Coulter are writing the screenplay for Crossface, based on Matthew Randazzo V's book Ring of Hell: The Story Of Chris Benoit & The Fall Of The Pro Wrestling Industry. Randazzo will executive produce with Ram Getz. Alex A Letz and Tony Lee are producing.
“I was pretty certain I’d stay in TV rather than returning to the feature world, because the material just seems so much better in TV, especially in drama, but then Crossface came my way,” Alexander said (via Variety). “A heartbreaking, true story about the dark side of wrestling. … I couldn’t say no to that.

It’s been a long time coming, but the planned biopic revolving around the death of WWE wrestler Chris Benoit is finally moving forward with Punisher: War Zone and Arrow director Lexi Alexander at the helm. Titled Crossface, the movie is based on the book Ring of Hell: The Story of Chris Benoit & the Fall of the Pro Wrestling Industry by Matthew Randazzo V.
One of the biggest stars in WWE at the time of his death in 2007, Benoit has since became best known not for his work in the ring, but because he murdered his wife and son before committing suicide. He was later posthumously diagnosed with Cte, a type of brain degeneration caused by multiple concussions which some doctors argued could have played a role in his actions.
In a recent press release, Alexander had this to say about taking the helm of Crossface (which is named after his finishing movie,...

There was a rumour a few years ago that actor Liev Schreiber was set to star in Crossface, a controversial movie about Chris Benoit.
Based on a book written by Matthew Randazzo titled “Ring Of Hell”, the film would chronicle how Benoit killed his wife Nancy and son Daniel, before committing suicide himself, all over the course of a tragic weekend at his family home in the summer of 2007.
The story first broke in July 2013 but at the time, Schreiber was quick to deny any involvement in the project, which does not have the backing of World Wrestling Entertainment.
However, in the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer mentioned that movie is happening, with Liev Schreiber indeed set for the lead role.
Have the producers behind the movie finally won him over, two years after they reportedly courted him for it?

Srg Films has set Vicente Amorim to direct the highly controversial Chris Benoit biopic Crossface, reports Deadline.
Amorim’s last English language movie was the 2008 Viggo Mortensen starrer Good, about the rise of the Nazi party in Germany as Hitler began to mind-warp good Germans into believing his disturbed ideals. A difficult movie he handled well with a great actor anchoring the project and it’s that kind of astute casting he’ll need here.

Last year Srg Films announced development of "Crossface," a new film based on WWE wrestler Chris Benoit, who killed his family and then himself back in 2007. Now comes word that Vicente Amorim has signed on to direct. Amorim previously directed "Good," with Viggo Mortensen, as well as "Too Much Brazil," "The Middle of the World" and "Dirty Hearts." "Crossface" will chronicle the pressures that Benoit faced through his wrestling career and how a lethal combination of drug-use, depression, and head trauma became unbearable for him. Sarah Coulter wrote the script. "Chris Benoit's story is the perfect vehicle for a fiercely honest film that is as much about him and the world of wrestling as it is about America and show business," said Amorim. "I am very happy to be on board to help tell this story." The plan is to begin filming next year. No word on who will play Benoit.

Liev Schreiber is set to portray former WWE World Champion Chris Benoit in Crossface, a re-telling of the tragic double-murder suicide that rocked the wrestling world in the summer of 2007.
The circumstances surrounding that devastating weekend where Benoit killed his wife and young son, before committing suicide in his home, caused a media sensation that the sports entertainment industry had never before, or has seen, since.
MoviePilot.com say Schreiber will portray Benoit in the film that will cover the Canadian grappler’s early career days, right up to that horrific weekend.
The controversial ‘biographical thriller’ does not have the backing of World Wrestling Entertainment, Chris Benoit’s employer at the time, but former Weinstein Company staffer Sarah Coulter’s script does reportedly include several WWE stars, including the late Eddie Guerrero (Benoit’s good friend who died less than a year before the fatal incident from heart failure), Triple H and even Vince McMahon.

Doing the press junket rounds for his new thriller The Grey, Liam Neeson has denied reports that he is in talks to play WWE owner Vince McMahon in the controversial Chris Benoit film biopic ‘Crossface‘. Personally I hadn’t heard the rumours but Neeson has denied the story anyway.
“No, I never heard of [the movie].” said Neeson with The Grey director Joe Carnahan adding; “I can’t see you doing that dude.”
Neeson went on to say that he had no interest in the role and knows very little about Mr. McMahon or Chris Benoit and that he isn’t a fan of professional wrestling. As far as movie role denials goes that is one of the biggest I’ve ever heard in my life!

In 2007, tragedy struck when WWE wrestler Chris Benoit took the lives of his wife and son, followed by his own. The murder-suicide sent shockwaves throughout the nation and it sparked an examination of the risks and dubious practices involved in pro wrestling. Now, Srg Films is looking to turn Benoit's story into a big-screen feature called Crossface. Based on Matthew Randazzo V‘s book Ring of Hell: The Story of Chris Benoit and the Fall of the Pro Wrestling Industry, the film will illustrate "the mental, emotional, and physical toll the sport has on its participants" through Benoit's breakdown. Sarah Coulter, a first-time feature writer, has already handed in a first draft of the screenplay, and the studio is currently "in talks" with actors and directors about the project, which has a planned start date of fall 2012. Srg head Dale Alexander Carnegie issued the following statements in a press release:...

Chris Benoit was a wrestler for the WWE, a very popular champion, and artist in the ring. Professional wrestling is no stranger to controversy and tragedy, but on June 24th, 2007, the industry was shaken to its very core in an unimaginable way, when WWE star Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy Sullivan, and their seven year old son, Daniel Benoit, were found dead inside their Fayetteville, Georgia home. The WWE responded with a three-hour tribute to their fallen comrade that night on their flagship show Monday Night Raw, but, not even 24 hours later, the sickening truth was revealed: Over that weekend, Chris had strangled both Nancy and Daniel to death before finally taking his own life.
This tragedy set off a firestorm against professional wrestling, leading to endless discussions about the effects of concussions and the rampant steroid use in the industry. Even almost five years later, it remains one of the definitive moments in the history of professional wrestling, and the dark cloud still looms over the industry.
