Class, disability and ethnicity continue to present challenges in gaining access to BFI film funding, but there has been progress for female-identifying filmmakers, according to a report titled Disrupt The Narrative that was published last week.
The report was written by UK-based producers Josh Cockcroft and Chi Thai and distribution and exhibition consultant Delphine Lievens, and funded by a Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity Industry Fellowship grant through Birmingham City University and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. It examines BFI data, taken from 2019-2020 specifically as a recent and typical year pre-pandemic, across the characteristics of gender, race, disability and class.

Andrew Haigh’s touching new drama All Of Us Strangers was the big winner at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).
As the calendar year draws to a close, we’re also inching close toward the season that will see multiple prestigious awards bodies, in theory, hand the best films of the year a golden statuette. The season kicked off with the British Independent Film Awards, also known as BIFA 2023, which were held in London on the 3rd of December.
Lolly Adefope and Kiell Smith-Bynoe hosted the event which celebrated British cinema, especially the slightly lesser-seen films with budgets far smaller than that of Oppenheimer. There were some terrific films nominated this year, and the roster of winners was as surprising as it was satisfying.
Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers was the biggest winner of the night, taking home a total of four awards plus three previously announced ones.

Jaeden Paige Boadilla in Raging Grace
A nail-biting thriller which looks at what happens when Filipina immigrant Joy (Max Eigenmann) and her young daughter, Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla), discover something seriously amiss in the home of a wealthy employer, Raging Grace combines elements of Gothic mystery with a sharp critique of racism and class-based exploitation in contemporary British society. It’s the work of writer/director Paris Zarcilla and producer Chi Thai, and it won a host of awards at SXSW, kicking off a highly successful tour of the festival circuit. Most recently, it screened at the Fantasia International Film Festival, and that’s where I got talking to Paris and Chi.

The film is the feature debut of Bifa-nominated Paris Zarcilla.
Max Eigenmann and David Hayman will lead the cast of Paris Zarcilla’s debut feature Raging Grace, which will shoot in the UK this November for AMC Networks’ genre streaming platform Shudder.
Verdict actress Eigenmann will star as an undocumented Filipina immigrant who lands a job as a careworker for a seemingly terminal old man (played by Hayman). She thinks she is securing a better life for her and her daughter, until a dark discovery threatens to destroy everything she has strived for and holds dear.
