I have not seen the two films Ninagawa directed in 2019 but her first two, “Sakuran” and “Helter Skelter” are among my favorite Japanese films of all time, both due to their concept and their intense visual style. Thus, I was quite curious to see how her style would be implemented in a TV series and Netflix’s “Followers” provided the opportunity.
The story revolves around four women. Limi Nara is a very successful photographer, who now feels the need to become a mother, despite the fact that she is single. Natsume Hyakuta has come to Tokyo in order to become an actress, but has not managed to do so at all, and she just does whatever job comes her way waiting for her big break. However, her life changes when she meets Hiraku, a YouTuber who used to be in the movie industry when he was younger, and when Limi...

Japanese director Sion Sono is one of the most prolific filmmakers working today, having released five films last year, including “Shinjuku Swan,” a live action adaptation of the popular manga series by the same name. The film followed Tatsuhiko (Gou Ayano), an adult entertainment talent scout working in the red light district of Tokyo. It has yet to receive a release in the United States, but Sono has already followed it up with a sequel, which follows Tatsuhiko as he clashes CEO Masaki Taki (Tadanobu Asano). The sequel stars Alice Hirose, Kippei Shiina, Yusuke Iseya, Motoki Fukami, Nobuaki Kaneko, Yu Yamada, Yusuke Kamiji, Maryjun Takahashi, Jun kaname, Hideo Nakano and Takashi Sasano. Watch a trailer for the film below. (Note: There are no English subtitles.)

Time to meet the Shinjuku Swan. A full Japanese trailer has debuted for Sion Sono's latest film, Shinjuku Swan II, a sequel to his first adaptation of a manga about an adult entertainment scout named Tatsuhiko Shiratori. Sion Sono is one of Japan's best directors working today, behind films like Love Exposure, Why Don't You Play in Hell? and Tokyo Tribe, though this film series hasn't picked up any Us distribution yet. Shinjuku Swan II stars Gou Ayano, Alice Hirose, Kippei Shiina, Yusuke Iseya, Motoki Fukami, Nobuaki Kaneko, Yu Yamada, Hideo Nakano, as well as Tadanobu Asano as the rival scout CEO that Tatsuhiko goes up against. This looks like some of Sono's most commercial work, but might still be fun. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Sion Sono's Shinjuku Swan II, from YouTube (via Tfs): And for reference, here's a trailer for the first Shinjuku...

If there’s one thing that can unite us as a country and bring some potential healing, it’s the gleeful insanity of Sion Sono. After the results of last night, it may feel like we are living in the world of one of his films, but sadly, this is reality. However, the prolific director does have a new feature coming out the weekend of the inauguration (at least in Japan) and the first trailer has arrived.
To get a sense of just how fast the helmer works, his next film is a sequel to 2015’s Shinjuku Swan — a film which has yet to get a U.S. release — based on Wakui Ken‘s manga. Shinjuku Swan II follows Tatsuhiko Shiratori (Gou Ayano) who works as a scout, recruiting girls to work in the adult entertainment business, but conflict arises when he clashes with CEO Masaki Taki (Tadanobu Asano). Crows Zero II
Stars: Shun Oguri, Kyôsuke Yabe, Meisa Kuroki, Nobuaki Kaneko, Haruma Miura, Sôsuke Takaoka, Takayuki Yamada | Written by Shôgo Mutô | Directed by Takashi Miike
When I first saw Crows Zero (review here) it quickly became one of my favourite Takashi Miike films. First introduced to his work through Audition then Ichi the Killer I was used to his harsh and extreme horror side, but the more of I see the more he impresses me. Be it with 13 Assassins or the Crows Zero films I’ve been able to see that he can enact ambitious fight scenes that are full to the brim with gore and his own impressive style, although Crows Zero to be fair does not use gore, it seems probably his tamest work and to be aimed at a more teen audience.
Following on straight after the events of the first film it’s not long...

After a long wait and one false alarm, the trailer for Ryuichi Inomata‘s performance calligraphy film Shodo Girls!! Watashi-tachi no Koshien has finally been released.
Performance calligraphy is a traditional activity which has been regaining popularity in recent years, thanks in part to a televised event called “Shodo Performance Koshien” in which teams of high school girls use oversized brushes to write out messages on 10-meter sheets of paper before carefully raising it in unison to display to the crowd. The competitive aspect comes with how synchronized and entertaining the girls are during the process, often incorporating music and dance in their routines in a unique combination of Japanese tradition and youth culture.
The film is set in Shikokuchuo, Ehime Prefecture, a city which prides itself on being Japan’s #1 producer of paper. However, deep economic recession has caused the local shopping district to become all but deserted. Satoko...
