Daniel Simon’s book Cosmic Motors details the elaborate design of unique futuristic vehicles, revealing 3D models and other renderings of spaceships, racing cars, warships, balloons and more. It’s a neat science fiction art collection from our pals at Titan Books. Simon knows a thing or two about vehicle design, having worked on Tron: Uprising and Captain America: The First Avenger. Now Michael Bay is adapting Simon’s book for the big screen. Variety reports that Bay and Warner Bros. have hired Kyle Ward to pen the screenplay. He recently completed work on Underworld V and is currently writing Arabian Knights for Universal. Bay is producing Cosmic Motors. We’d be lying if we said we weren’t hoping to see his name touted as director one day soon since...

Whether or not Michael Bay ends up directing Transformers 5, high-concept sci-fi vehicles are clearly still a part of his future. He's currently in the process of setting up Cosmic Motors at Warner Bros., a film based on Daniel Simon's book of lavish concept art. Kyle Ward, who wrote Machete Kills and the new Hitman movie Agent 47, has been tasked with creating the screenplay.Ward will also need to come up with a narrative on which to hang it, since Cosmic Motors in book form is more about concept than story. Simon has worked as a car designer for Lamborghini and Bugatti, as well as on projects like Tron: Uprising, Captain America: The First Avenger and Oblivion. His book imagines "spaceships, pods, race cars, giant trains, warships and balloons from various planets of the Galaxion system... from concept to completion" via sketches and 3D modelling. There's already a...

Daniel Simon is one of Hollywood's most popular vehicle designers, having worked on such films as "Oblivion" and "Captain America: The First Avenger." Back in 2007, he gave fans a look at his work by putting together a concept art book featuring his futuristic vehicle designs. Now comes word that Michael Bay has teamed up with Warner Bros to turn this art book into a feature film, called "Cosmic Motors." Kyle Ward (Machete Kills) has has been hired to write the screenplay. The book doesn't have a storyline, which means that Ward will have to come up with something original. Check out some of the images from the book below. Images: (click to enlarge)...

Warner Bros. Pictures and Michael Bay have picked Kyle Ward ("Machete Kills," "Agent 47") to write the screenplay for their "Cosmic Motors" project.
The story is based on a 2007 concept art book by German designer Daniel Simon that features futuristic vehicle designs. The book tells a story about the design and the purpose of his various futuristic vehicles.
Simon was the lead vehicle designer on "Tron: Legacy" and "Captain America: The First Avenger" as well as a concept illustrator on "Oblivion" and "Prometheus". He's also worked on futuristic concepts for companies like Bugatti and Lamborghini.
Bay is on board to produce the project. Ward is currently penning the launch film of Universal's "Arabian Knights" franchise.

Lotus has unveiled their latest superbike called the C-01, and it was amazingly designed by Daniel Simon, who is the same guy that worked on films such as Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, and Captain America. You can definitely see some resemblance of the designs from those film sin these bikes. They looks insanely cool, and this is what Simon had to say in a statement,
"The design process of the C-01 was a labour of love. We have worked hard to create a motorcycle with very distinctive features such as a clean main body, an extremely low side profile, a bold stance, a unique air intake, logical partline solutions and clean graphics."
The bike is 400-pounds and it packs a 200hp four-stroke engine. There's no price for it yet, but you can bet your ass it's going to be expensive as hell. This is one of those things I want,...

Last week I got to see Oblivion before pretty much anyone which was an absolute privilege as I thought the movie looked absolutely stunning. I’m still not sold on the story but am very eager to see the film again. After seeing the movie, I got to sit down and talk to Director Joseph Kosinski about the process of making his latest creation. He originally penned the idea for it in 2005 so this has been a long time in the making and it’s great to see his latest project hitting both standard and IMAX cinemas today.
In the interview we find out about his work changing it from a concept to the big screen, working with his cast which includes Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Morgan Freeman and also to him about working with Daniel Simon on the concept art for the movie and where he currently is with Tron: Legacy.

Tom Crusie stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the visionary director of Tron: Legacy and producers of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

[1] Over the weekend I got the chance to sit down and talk with Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston. Johnston started at LucasFilm and created the final designs for iconic characters Boba Fett and Yoda. Johnston made his directorial debut with the fx heavy Honey I Shrunk The Kids. His filmography includes: The Rocketeer, Jumanji, October Sky, Jurassic Park III, Hidalgo, and The Wolfman (and yes, Johnston does talk about his experience on that movie). In addition to Captain America, I also asked Joe when we might expect a Rocketeer blu-ray. Also, yesterday I posted my interview with screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus (which if you havent, you can read it here [2]). Hit the jump to read my interview with Joe. Question: How did you become involved with Captain America? Joe Johnston: I had just signed on to do The Wolfman, I mean literally weeks before,...

"Captain America: The First Avenger" takes place way back during the WWII era, so you can bet your baseball bat making it look believable takes a lot of work. One of the most important things in recreating any past time period? The vehicles.
After working on "Tron: Legacy," vehicle designer Daniel Simon came back from the future, so to speak, to create cars for "America."
Simon created a whole fleet of vehicles for the Hydra baddies that fit right in to the time period while still appearing advanced. He told NextMovie all about designing vehicles for one of summer's most anticipated movies.
Simon has an impressive background that led him to the job… I am a vehicle concept designer with a background in real car design for brands like Bugatti or Volkswagen. I published a book with my own vehicle creations called "Cosmic Motors" which brought me to Hollywood to...

Last week, I got to see the very first UK screening of Disney’s new tent pole movie, Tron: Legacy. The hype for the movie had been building over the past 12 months with various trailers and marketing telling us that this could be the coolest movie we see all year! Disney had arranged the first screening to be at the Waterloo IMAX which is a fantastic venue, and we were told that the print we were watching was the only IMAX print in the world. All impressive stuff but read on to find out if it deserves the title as the coolest film of 2010… and to find out if it’s any good!
It is probably fair to say that most people won’t know where the Tron franchise has come from – or that it is indeed a franchise. After telling my friends that I’d just been to see Tron: Legacy,...

Andrex adverts now feature creepy CG puppies. In a slightly eerie usage of computer technology, digital dogs use laptops, bake cakes and drive taxis in an effort to sell us toilet paper.
The Andrex ad, with its sinister dogs from the Uncanny Valley, is evidence, if any were needed, of the ubiquity of computer graphics. Once a novelty, the use of CG has become so cheap and commonplace that you're as likely to see a fully computer animated mammal in a commercial for toilet roll as you are in a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster.

I recently got to travel to Los Angeles to a rather special day-long event. That event included a 20 minute sneak peak at Tron: Legacy (which many of you will now have seen at the various Tron Nights around the world) and the chance to meet some of the actors and film-makers behind this fabulous project! Since then, I’ve actually seen the completed movie twice, once at the IMAX and once at the UK Premiere of the movie. You can see my review here.
Since the movie is out a week today on 17th December, I thought it was time to bring you the final part of the Production Design presentations that I recorded in La.
The first of the pieces was an interview with Director, Joseph Kosinski where we talk about how he got involved in the project and how he used his computer game commercial background to create such a fine looking film.

Designer Darren Gilford hoped the Light Cycle, the sleek speeder that swirls trails of neon in Tron: Legacy, would be the "sexiest, coolest vehicle you could possibly imagine." Gilford, Daniel Simon, and a team of concept artists tried to avoid alienating fans of the 1982 cult classic by drawing inspiration from the bike's original design, a boxy pixilated vehicle that was severely hampered by 1980s technology. Three decades later, the Light Cycle has morphed into a glossy prowler, with hubless wheels and loops of light that blur where the bike ends and the body begins.
Fast Company spoke with Gilford about the original film, designing the Light Cycle, and the limitations of engineering concept vehicles.
The light cycle is so central to this film's hype, from the toys to the trailers to the video games. What was the design process like for the vehicle?

In architecture school, Joseph Kosinski had to post his work in class for professor critiques before returning to the drawing board to fix his mistakes. Years later, he used the same approach to codify the look of Disney’s Tron: Legacy, which opens Dec. 17.
“I’d gather all the designers, and we’d go from cubicle to cubicle discussing each other’s ideas,“ Kosinski says of the feature film directorial debut that consumed his life from the summer of 2007 to the afternoon of Nov. 17. “It not only made everyone feel involved, but the film began to have a cohesive aesthetic. The look had to feel like it came from one hand. There was a giant art team of around 50 people, and after a while you couldn’t tell which drawing came from which person.”

Not even a streaming cold and a rather chilly evening were going to keep me from this one. Yesterday evening saw the World Premiere premiere of Tron: Legacy light up the Empire cinema in London’s trendy Leicester Square and the stars of the show were out in force to greet a rabid public!
I got there a bit early and bagged a peach of a spot to get you some pretty pictures and hunt down some interviews. The fans had arrived even earlier and were screaming and waving around identity discs and home made Jeff Bridges collages. Unfortunately there was nothing in the way of cosplay but I did spot a rather natty Flynn Lives t-shirt.
Although there was a swamp of X Factor folk and other assorted popstrels clogging up the electro-blue carpet, we didn’t have long to wait for the talent to zap themselves onto our grid.

Tonight was always going to end up in a London hotspot, decked out in blue neon with Felix B, one of the duo who form Basement Jaxx pounding our ears at the Tate Modern which played host for the after-show party.
The arrival of Disney’s Tron: Legacy was always going to turn heads, its design is brilliantly futuristic and the production design and original soundtrack from Daft Punk have teased the fans long enough, and the UK premiere held in Leicester Square was a fantastic event with cast and crew on hand to give the legion of Tron fans (who haven’t got a collective term so far) something to talk about.
Upon entering the Tate, we were thrust into a space full to the brim with models dressed as characters from the movie and surrounded by multiple lasers (which I’ve just found out created the largest ever laser display in the UK!

Just in time for the holidays you can now get your very own street-legal Tron Light Cycle. This is makes complete sense with Tron: Legacy's release looming on the horizon. A bike shop in Florida has built 10 custom street-legal Tron Light Cycle lookalikes. The selling cost, $55,000!
The bikes were built by Parker Brothers Choppers. The bikes feature a steel frame, fiberglass bodywork and use a super fast V-twin Suzuki TLR1000 engine. Stopping power comes from a custom made friction drum that keeps the bike true to the look of Daniel Simon's latest Light Cycle design. Customers have a choice between actual gauges and an iPad dock that displays vital statistics on the iPad's touchscreen.
Don't be fooled, these bikes are not replicas or recreations since the Light Cycles in both Tron films were virtual. "We basically used the images we could get off the web in order to make the bike,...

Along with around two dozen other writers, bloggers and hacks, I've been flown in to view approximately 20 minutes' footage from Joseph Kosinski's forthcoming Tron: Legacy, and the sense of anticipation, as we arrive, is electrifying.
It's the material that's just been screened as part of the Tron: Legacy preview screenings around the globe. And now I'm allowed to talk about it.
Still pink-eyed with jet lag, we're bundled into a colossal van and driven to Digital Domain's unassuming headquarters in Venice. For those unfamiliar with the name,...

Over the past few days, I’ve been completely immersed in all things Tron: Legacy. I was so lucky and got to go to Los Angeles and visit Michael Bay’s special effects house, Digital Domain, who are hard at work doing the finishing touches to the new Disney movie come alive with some of the best effects I’ve seen in any more come alive.
While we were there, we got to watch around 30 minutes of footage and meet and interview the director of Tron: Legacy, Joseph Kosinski, two of the cast, Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund along with a mass of the production team who are simply awesome! All of them will have had a part in the images below. Daniel Simon – Vehicle Design, Christine Bieselin Clark – Costume Design, .
We also got to meet Steven Lisberger (Creator, Writer and Director of the original Tron) and producer, Justin Springer.

The latest piece of promotional art for Disney’s Tron: Legacy appears, featuring star Olivia Wilde…
The steady influx of promotional material for Tron: Legacy continues to trickle in, and the latest arrival is the luminous billboard image you see before you here. Showcasing Olivia Wilde in character as Quorra, a warrior computer program who helps Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) and his son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) escape from Tron's shiny digital realm, it's a typically distinctive and eye-catching piece of artwork.
In fact, all the material we've seen so far has been brilliantly designed, and if nothing else, Tron: Legacy will definitely look and sound fantastic, with Daft Punk responsible for its score, and German concept designer Daniel Simon sensitively updating the first film's sleek Light Cycle.
One of the few films shot in 3D we're genuinely looking forward to, Tron: Legacy looks like a more than worthy sequel to the classic 80s original,...
