Mary (Alexandra Daddario) and Ben (Diego Boneta) are the star-crossed black sheep of two powerful families engaged in a centuries-long feud – and they’re about to reignite an affair after many years apart. From the 2010 edition of the Blacklist to Zac Efron’s schedule, Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari’s screenplay for Die in a Gunfight seemed to be getting the fast-track into theaters before seven years of development saw a revolving door of actors and directors changing. It would take almost a decade before cameras started rolling and the person sitting prettiest after the whole ordeal became Collin Schiffli. After two indie films written by frequent collaborator David Dastmalchian, he’s finally got his hands in the Hollywood pie with Lionsgate and a modestly star-studded cast of B-listers to help make his stylistic flourishes look good. And there are a lot of them. Whether or not they work to make this riff on “Romeo and Juliet” a success is beside the point.

Chicago – Two notable Midwestern filmmakers recently teamed up for their second film together, as the Midwest Independent Film Festival presents “All Creatures Here Below,” written by Colllin Schiffli and lead actor David Dastmalchian, and directed by Schiffli. After acclaim for their first shot-in-Chicago effort, “Animals” (2014), the duo widened their landscape palette in this road picture, as two desperate souls (Karen Gillan and Dastmalchian) seek asylum in their hometown Kansas City. The night’s activities begins at 6pm on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2019, at the Landmark Century Cinema in Chicago, with an after party to follow the screening. Click here for details and tickets.

The current controversy over Georgia’s restrictive new abortion laws, and resulting calls to withdraw Hollywood coin from that state, have underlined the political-shuffleboard nature of U.S. location shoots. Coincidentally arriving at the same time is “All Creatures Here Below,” the first feature to take advantage of Kansas City, Mo.’s filmmaker tax incentive, which is unusual in that it’s a strictly municipal rather than statewide ordinance.
That fiscal footnote may wind up being the most memorable thing about this sophomore feature by director Collin Schiffli, whose debut, “Animals,” was also a collaboration with scenarist-star David Dastmalchian. It’s a decently acted and crafted drama that nonetheless seems built on a foundation of phony pathos, revolving around doomed lovers whose fate seems more a matter of contrived miserabilism than authenticity. Goldwyn is opening the indie at 10 theaters across the nation on May 17, simultaneous with VOD launch.

David Dastmalchian is not an immediately recognisable name. But you will know his body of work which includes The Dark Knight, Prisoners and also Ant-Man proving he is no ordinary guy from Kansas.
All Creatures Here Below sees the actor taking on scriptwriting duties in a thought provoking indie drama that marks a homecoming, of sorts, with the entire shoot taking place in Kansas.
From the offset we are introduced to a young couple in a rough neighbourhood just trying to survive. Ruby is a cleaner in some form of government programme and after being re-assigned to a different post is only concerned about whether or not she will still get her food stamps. And it is after Gensan (David Dastmalchian) loses his job where things start to get interesting.
We go from a cock-fight that is raided by the police to Gensan killing the guy trying to escape with the money.

Chicago – Sometimes you just need a break, that small window of opportunity to burst through and make the mark. Actor David Dastmalchian knows all about that phenomenon, as he produced and starred in his semi-autobiographical film “Animals,” and got the break of a lifetime landing a role in the film, “The Dark Knight.”
Dastmalchian is a consummate and enthusiastic gentleman, a performer who works hard, but has a humble and appealing attitude of gratitude. His star is ascending further this summer as he scored another role in a superhero epic, this time for Marvel Films, alongside Paul Rudd in “Ant-Man.” David Dastmalchian and director Collin Schiffli will also make a Chicago appearance this week (Friday, May 22nd, 2015) for the Chicago Opening Night screening of “Animals,” part of a limited nationwide release. Click here for details and ticket purchasing information for the Chicago screening.

David Dastmalchian will appear in this summer's new Marvel franchise Ant-Man, but Animals is probably way more important to him, considering he wrote it. The premise — homeless drug addicts in love — is depressing, but as directed by Collin Schiffli, the film has warmth and humor, ultimately conveying a sense of redemptive hope that Dastmalchian likely brings to the table. He plays Jude, a junkie who lives in a car with the love of his life, Bobbie (Kim Shaw, who's great). At the film's outset, the pair are in relatively good shape, affectionate and playful despite homelessness, but living close to the edge of their resources and the bottom of their stash. Their marginal life is financed with petty theft and clever cons — they're both educ...

Even if you don't know the name, you'd likely recognize David Dastmalchian. He's bagged roles in movies like Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" and Denis Villeneuve's "Prisoners," and later this summer you'll see him in "Ant-Man." He's also a budding screenwriter, and his latest film "Animals" made its debut last spring at SXSW where he received a Special Jury Award for Courage In Storytelling. This weekend, you can see what impressed the jury in Austin. Starring Dastmalchian alongside Kim Shaw with Collin Schiffli directing, the film tracks a Chicago couple weighted down by addiction and a life-altering setback. And as you'll see in this clip, it's a highly visual effort that gets up close with the characters, from swooning highs to bottomless lows. "Animals" opens in limited release on May 15th. Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired North American rights to Animals, the SXSW 2014 title starring Prisoners‘ David Dastmalchian and Kim Shaw as young Chicagoan lovers and addicts whose relationship is tested by a sudden, life-altering setback. Collin Schiffli makes his directorial debut with the film, which Dastmalchian wrote. Oscilloscope is planning a 2015 release.
“We are so thrilled to be releasing Animals, a film we haven’t been able to shake since first seeing it at South by Southwest,” Oscilloscope’s Dan Berger and David Laub said in a statement. “The movie is at once a bold and honest look at one of the tougher parts of our world, while simultaneously a poetic and lyrical reflection on how love and human connection can get anyone through the most difficult of circumstances. Collin is a major new filmmaker, and we are excited to welcome him, David and the rest of the Animals team to the O-Scope family.

Chicago – One of the best local independent films recently shot in Chicago is the story of two lost souls entitled “Animals.” The Midwest Independent Film Festival will present the film on their usual “first Tuesday” program on June 3rd, 2014, at the Landmark Century Centre Cinema in Chicago.
“Animals” is directed by Collin Schiffili, and was written by David Dastmalchian – who also portrays lead character Jude – based on his own experiences. The film co-stars Kim Shaw as Bobbie, Jude’s lover and co-dependent drug addict. The achingly raw journey of the couple is a stark and harrowing look at addiction. Director Schiffli also uses the City of Chicago as a character in the film, going to the back alleys and seamier underside of the urban landscape.

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.
