When done well, found footage horror makes for one of the most immersive and unnerving viewing experiences. The inherent naturalism tends to make the horror feel more plausible and real. Found footage horror doesn’t need a huge budget or recognizable names among the cast to induce chills, either, and the lo-fi visuals only further add to the scares.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to found footage horror movies that excel with the format, delivering unsettling atmosphere and scares while making the most of their immersive, lo-fi aesthetics. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

In this edition of The Silver Lining, we’ll be covering Colin Minihan’s alien abduction thriller, Extraterrestrial!
At one point, it can be argued that the Vicious Brothers were one of Canada’s most influential filmmaking duos, only challenged by the Soska Sisters in genre cinema. While these punk-rock partners (who aren’t really brothers) skyrocketed to stardom after the popularity of 2007’s Grave Encounters, they weren’t too keen on repeating themselves after that initial success, even passing along their directorial duties to John Poliquin on Grave Encounters 2.
For their next endeavor, the duo decided to look back on an unproduced passion project. Inspired by their perceived lack of “cool” alien movies in the horror genre, the filmmakers had come up with a story informed by UFO abduction accounts and government conspiracy theories long before their first feature film. Updating the script, they soon began production on what would eventually become 2014’s Extraterrestrial.

Though writer/director Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz made a big splash a couple of years ago with the release of Grave Encounters (review) under the moniker of "The Vicious Brothers," the pair have slowly drifted into separate careers with What Keeps You Alive marking Minihan's first solo effort as both writer and director.
Minihan's latest has been much buzzed about since it premiered at SXSW earlier this year. It stars Hannah Emily Anderson and Brittany Allen as Jackie and Jules respectively, a couple who take a vacation to a remote cabin to celebrate their one year anniversary. Shortly after the pair arrive, Jackie starts to display a dark streak and when she shares a...

A Las Vegas stripper attempts to escape the zombie apocalypse in Colin Minihan's low-budget It Stains the Sands Red, a film whose eponymous "it" may not refer to the undead menace we're expecting. All My Children's Brittany Allen is a solo protagonist here, bucking the genre's customary ensemble format, and that's not the only way Minihan's picture (co-written with Stuart Ortiz) strays from the usual script. Genre fans will likely have a hard time coming to terms with this tonally confused and sometimes grating film, whose commercial prospects are limited despite the appeals it makes to some underserved audiences.

*full disclosure: an online screener was provided by the film's publicity arm. Director: Colin Minihan. Writers: Colin Minihan, Stuart Ortiz. Cast: Brittany Allen, Juan Riedinger, Merwin Mondesir It Stains the Sands Red is the latest thriller from the Vicious Brothers. Colin Minihan (Grave Encounters) and Stuart Ortiz try to breath some life into the zombie sub-genre, with this title. However, the long zombie chase in the desert gets a bit tiresome and repetitive, after awhile. The film's tone is overly sad. Meanwhile, there are almost no redeemable characters on-screen, outside of central character Molly (Brittany Allen). Even Molly has a long list of vices. A bit slow, It Stains the Sands Red offers minimal conflict and action, as well. It is not all bad. But, It Stains the Sands Red will entertain only the most patient zombie film fans. The film begins with one of the film's only wide shots.

Last year saw the astonishing Train to Busan and The Girl With All The Gifts take the zombie sub-genre into exciting new territories. Now writer/ director Colin Minihan (Grave Encounters, Extraterrestrial) and co-writer Stuart Ortiz, push the envelope further with a progressive horror that’s equally exhilarating as it is emotional and most importantly fun. As well as being loaded with imperative blood, guts and terror, Istsr is also shockingly poignant, with a straight-forward narrative. It’s an off-beat zombie flick unlike any other for Istsr is also a chase/ road movie, crime/ drug thriller, love story, comedy and family drama as well as perceptibly a horror. Its closest comparison point would be Maggie, but where the Schwarzenegger drama was an irrefutable slow burner, Istsr is elating and with a plethora of horror cogs to ensure it works as something new for genre fans as well as general audiences.

Over the past few years, screenwriter Simon Barrett has risen to prominence among film fans in general and horror fans in particular, especially for his last two collaborations with director Adam Wingard. Both the duo’s 2013 feature You’re Next and their 2014 film The Guest have garnered acclaim, with Barrett’s work also appearing in the horror anthology series V/H/S and V/H/S 2, as well as in The ABCs of Death.

Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz, referred to in horror circles as The Vicious Brothers, have set their next project in Temple, a horror-thriller written by You’re Next and The Guest scribe Simon Barrett.
The duo, behind cult favorite Grave Encounters and its sequel as well as last year’s Extraterrestrial, will roll cameras on the project in Japan later this year. There are plans to also release a book of ghost stories focusing on various real temples in Japan, written by Eiji Otsuka and partly focusing on the main temple at the center of the pic, further plot details for which are being kept under wraps.

"The Guest," directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett, was one of 2014's sleeper treats, starring Dan Stevens as an unwelcome man from the past who invades the family of a fellow comrade who died. Horror maestro Barrett, who also wrote Wingard's meta-slasher "You're Next" (2011), now has a new script titled "Temple" to be directed by Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz, a.k.a. With Scream Factory releasing The Vicious Brothers' Extraterrestrial on Blu-ray today, I had a chance to talk with the filmmaking duo of Stuart Ortiz and Colin Minihan about Extraterrestrial’s origins, working with Michael Ironside, Grave Encounters 3, and more.
Thanks for taking the time to chat today. How did you guys come up with the idea for Extraterrestrial?
Stuart Ortiz: It was actually the first script Colin and I ever came up with, which was about eight years ago now. It’s changed a lot since then, though. Colin and I met on the Internet on a filmmaking web forum, a really early one where people put up clips and stuff. This was in the dial-up era, so a one minute-long clip would take all day to upload. We would post short films we made and we liked each other’s work and started chatting and formed this relationship.

Utterly empty. It’s aware of the tropes of the new mythos of alien abductions, but makes no attempt to find anything even the slightest bit fresh in them. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): so tired of traditional horror movies
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
It’s literally a Cabin in the Woods scenario in which the hapless 20somethings invoke — among all the many scary options for their own mass slaughter they didn’t realize they had — an alien abduction, and without Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins having made bets on it. When I said that Cabin “render[ed] all past and future examples of the genre superfluous,” this is precisely the sort of movie I was imagining could no longer be made in its wake… and frankly I’m astonished that anyone had the gumption to do so. The Vicious Brothers made a name for themselves with the 2011 horror Grave Encounters, literally and figuratively.
The sequel, written by the Brothers (who are filmmakers Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz) and directed by John Poliquin, takes us back to the setting of the first film as fans of the first Grave Encounters film set out to visit the psychiatric hospital where it all happened.
More Ghostwatch than Paranormal Activity, the Grave Encounters series has a number of pleasingly unsettling elements to it, not least the surreal psychological evils which torment the two groups in their respective films. It’s well worth seeking the films out and seeing what a decent take on the found footage horror genre can do.
I had the chance to put some questions to the Brothers and while brevity was on the cards here I did manage to get some details about their films and what...

Title: Grave Encounters 2 Director: John Poliquin Starring: Richard Harmon, Dylan Playfair, Stephanie Bennett, Leanne Lapp, Howard Lai, Sean Rogerson, Ben Wilkinson Using Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz’s found-footage horror flick “Grave Encounters” as a self-referential leaping-off point, “Grave Encounters 2″ gathers up a head of loose-limbed steam and bundles it up in a rather impressive technical package, but ultimately fumbles it away on a story that buckles under the weight of layered self-consciousness. Film student Alex Wright (Richard Harmon) is one of many folks obsessed with the original “Grave Encounters,” whose YouTube trailer was a viral sensation. Opinions on the movie are wildly divergent, but some people believe it to have [ Read More ]

I caught the first Grave Encounters at the end of a mini-marathon of rather terrible indie horror films, so once I realized I liked the movie, I was rather enthusiastic about it. Written and directed by Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz (aka The Vicious Brothers), Grave Encounters didn't re-invent any wheels, but it did prove to me (and several other people) that "found footage" horror could continue to hold some mystique outside of The Blair Witch Project, [Rec], and Paranormal Activity. The combination of found footage indie horror mixed with one of those innumerable "ghost hunter" series simply worked for me, and I admired the filmmakers for keeping things simple, straightforward, and kinda spooky.
The sequel, on the other hand, is a rushed, dull, uneventful, grating, tiresome, and ultimately infuriating piece of self-congratulatory nonsense that suffers from the same problems as Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 and (god help us...

The Vicious Brothers crashed onto the horror scene with the found footage film Grave Encounters, which owed its success to a massively successful trailer that went viral on YouTube. Now, the dashing duo is back with a sequel, Grave Encounters 2. The film is out on iTunes now, but opens in select theaters on October 12th.
In the following Uncensored interview, Stuart Ortiz and Colin Minihan (the Vicious Brothers), reveal their origins as friends and as filmmakers, explain where they came up with their moniker, discuss their thoughts on both Grave Encounters movies (as well as the possibility of a 3rd), and hint at their next project. Read on for the goods.

Fans of Grave Encounters are well aware that Grave Encounters 2 (review) is now making its way onto the festival circuit and into their homes via VOD. Recently the creators of the series, The Vicious Brothers, spoke with Dread Central about Grave Encounters 2 and more.
Individually known as Stuart Ortiz and Collin Minihan, the guys preferred all their answers be attributed to The Vicious Brothers as a whole to illustrate their one-mindedness about their work. And it's work they have big hopes for. "We wanted Grave Encounters 2 to be our Aliens to Alien. A lot of people say the sequel is a better film," The Vicious Brothers said. "We think the sequel that we've come up with is twice everything we delivered in the first film."

The “found footage” genre has been exploding ever since the international break-out hit [Rec] and has fully established itself as a profitable genre, thanks to the grassroots success of Paranormal Activity. But do you want something actually scary? Try Grave Encounters (review here). The terrifying debut from the Canadian directing duo of The Vicious Brothers made a splash at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is headed to theaters and Video-On-Demand soon, before coming home on DVD in October.
Killer Film recently caught up with the young directors, as we talk about the genre, the scares, and that creepy old mental institution. Check it out!
Jon: Was it hard writing Grave Encounters, considering the success of the genre now thanks to Paranormal Activity?
Stuart Ortiz: When we started writing it, it was interesting, because we were going to make it quote/unquote realistic, subtle. We actually started writing this...

The found footage horror film Grave Encounters is by no means the first of its genre nor is it likely to be the last, but it is the first take inspiration from the current crop of Ghost Hunters-style shows that have proliferated on basic cable over the last couple of years. The feature writing and directorial debut by the Vicious Brothers (real names Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz) which debuted in limited release in New York and L.A. last week, and is going wider this week, Grave Encounter purports to be the first and only episode of the titular show, whose crew and host disappeared inside of a mental hospital with a history of abuse and later strange events. Atypical of the shows from which...

At Comic-Con today, I had the chance to sit down with two very new and promising filmmakers. The Vicious Brothers, aka Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz, started dreaming of making movies at the young age of 13. After writing scripts together and working on some ideas online, they finally got the ball rolling once they hit 18 and met in the flesh.

Stuart Ortiz and Colin Minihan are The Vicious Brothers. Who? The Vicious Brothers, a writing-directing duo that are here to offer something different and make an impression and, let.s face it, are you ever going to forget that moniker? For their feature debut, they.ve created Grave Encounters, a horror film focusing on the cast and crew of a ghost-hunting reality show also called .Grave Encounters.. As their next project, the team is taking on the Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital. The facility caretaker locks them in for the night and the group goes to work hunting down the resident ghosts. Then again, they don.t really expect to find any spirits, so when some rather malicious ones make their presence known, the .Grave Encounters. crew is caught between the excitement of having some truly creepy action to shoot and the horrifying reality of their situation. Grave Encounters is far more...

Upcoming "found footage" horror flick Grave Encounters - the feature-length debut of two 25-year-old filmmakers calling themselves the Vicious Brothers (real names: Stuart Ortiz and Colin Minihan) takes the concept of "ghost-hunting" reality shows to a whole new level in its story of a TV documentary crew planning to manufacture some "genuine" paranormal phenomena for their audience who discover that the abandoned Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital in which they're shooting the show's latest episode possesses a malicious mind all its own. B-d reporter Chris Eggertsen recently hopped on the phone with the young directors to discuss the film's distribution deal with the new distribution arm of the Tribeca Film Festival (where the movie will be debuting on April 22nd), comparisons with that other supernatural-laden "found footage" horror flick, and whether they encountered any real-life "paranormal activity" in the abandoned mental facility where the movie was shot.

Darclight Films is shopping Grave Encounters around the American Film Market. It's just one more contribution to the ever-growing spate of films about a "ghost hunting trip gone awry."
