Mexico’s most bankable stars, Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, have teamed up with L.A. and Miami-based Exile Content to produce Travis Gutiérrez Senger’s documentary on the groundbreaking art group, “Asco: Without Permission.”
The documentary chronicles the Los Angeles based avant-garde art group Asco during the 1970s and ‘80s. Melding activism and art, they challenged Latinx representation in the art world, politics, and Hollywood through their provocative performance art, photography, video and muralism.
García Bernal and Luna will serve as executive producers with their production company La Corriente del Golfo producing alongside Los Angeles-based North of Now and Gutiérrez Senger’s Asa Nisi Masa Films, in association with Exile Content.
Asco is described to have “pioneered avant-garde tactics to respond to issues of racism, representation, and police brutality that were affecting the Chicano community in Los Angeles.”

We've got an exclusive clip from the film for you to check out below and some details to follow. What if you suddenly decided to disappear without a trace? What would you leave behind to explain your actions? In 1992, a real estate developer did indeed vanish into thin air, with only VHS tapes left to detail to his loved ones the reasons as such. Writer/director Travis Gutiérrez Senger has used this story as inspiration for his debut feature "Desert Cathedral." Starring Lee Tergesen, Chaske Spencer, and Petra Wright, this moody picture blends found footage elements, archival video, and more to create a unique setting for this based on a true story tale, in which a wife hires a private investigator to track down her missing husband. Aside from the intriguing teaser trailer which you can see below, the talent assembled for the film is strong, with Lincoln Leopard Films and Chip Hourihan ("Frozen River") producing, a score from excellent, on the rise composers Saunder Jurriaans and Danny Bensi ("Enemy,...

The 5th edition of the American Film Festival in Wroclaw, Poland kicks off today, and among the 20 films featured in the competition (it truly is a buffet made up of the newest crop of American independent filmmakers) we find the international premiere for Travis Gutiérrez Senger’s Desert Cathedral.
With a score composed by Saunder Jurriaans and Danni Bensi (Two Gates of Sleep, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Simon Killer) overlapping with actual, true-life recordings from the film’s subject, what we find here below in our exclusive first look at the festival teaser is a real estate developer (played by Lee Tergesen) who mysteriously disappears into the Southwestern desert in 1992 and who leaves behind a series of VHS tapes. Along with mixed drink recipe details for a Harvey Wallbanger, what we have here in the ubiquity-infused, auditorily jarring, bone-chilling handsomely looking hybrid, about a man who lost his way both factually and figuratively.

Stage Fright
Director: Jerome Sable
Writer(s): Jerome Sable
Producer(s): Serendipity Point Films’ Ari Lantos, Jonas Bell Pasht.
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Minnie Driver, Meat Loaf, Allie MacDonald and Douglas Smith
As we revert back to his brilliant 2010 short The Legend of Beaver Dam as an indication of better and bigger things to come, while this horror musical Stage Fright (shot in September of ’12) remains in post, its director has soaked himself in more red corn syrup. We could feasibly getting two Jerome Sable films in ’14 with his participation on the ABCs of Death 2 omnibus.
Gist: Minnie Driver plays Kylie Swanson, the enigmatic and haunted star of the Broadway stage, and mother of siblings Camilla (MacDonald) and Buddy (Smith) who find themselves at the centre of the unfolding horror at the camp. Producers: Lincoln Leopard’s Senger and Michael J. Mouncer with Chip Hourihan
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Lee Tergesen, Chaske Spencer, Russell Hodgkinson
Equipped with a behind the scenes team of film composers Saunder Juriaans and Daniel Bensi (The One I Love) and film editor Marc Vives (Ping Pong Summer), it’s the approach and the biographical narrative treatment in Travis Gutiérrez Senger’s Desert Cathedral that has got me hyper curious. Employing a narrative hybrid model (found footage and archival materials) and what I’m guessing will be a fractured timeline, means creatively, we might be looking at a truly rich investigative experience.
Gist: Based on a true story and starring Lee Tergesen as the real life Peter Collins, this about a real estate developer who mysteriously disappears into the Southwestern desert in 1992, leaving behind a series of VHS tapes.

Director: Kevin Macdonald
Writer: Dennis Kelly
Producers: Macdonald and Charles Steel
U.S. Distributor: Focus Features
Cast: Jude Law, Jodie Whittaker, Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn, Karl Davies, and Daniel Ryan
Kevin Macdonald’s been busy. Alternating between feature films and documentaries (he had one of each in 2013), he’s back with an action thriller in 2014. While a preliminary plot synopsis doesn’t quite spark the imagination, Macdonald’s got a knack for off the cuff momentum, even in material that’s sometimes a bit tepid (2009′s State of Play, for instance). An unassuming cast adds to intrigue.
Gist: Jude Law plays a modern-day submarine captain who is laid off by the salvage company he works for. Desperate to get even with his former employers and to prove himself, he is approached by a shadowy backer. Handed command of a submarine that is barely seaworthy, he is to rally...

The elusive “Golden Ticket”. Beginning next Wednesday (December 4th) in a wave of four announcements, is when the official word comes out. Plenty of filmmakers are already in the know, but some will find out over the course of this Thanksgiving weekend. Having covered the festival and fest circuit for some time now, we’re already aware that worthy films that were indeed submitted will be excluded from the ’14 edition. Thousands of filmmakers won’t get the phone call, and while it can bruise dreams, this is not a rejection of quality…but rather, a preference from a programmer/programming team which reflects a larger mandate. John Cooper, Trevor Groth et al. have a difficult job and the way I see it, it’s the equivalent to draft day for a major professional sport – where a team in a given turn doesn’t go for the consensus pick, but instead...

Compared with other first time filmmaker peers, Travis Gutiérrez Senger’s feature debut appears to have benefited from an abundance of post prod time, when admittedly, the helmer unearthed more info on his subject which meant he added another creative coat of paint. Senger who got his start in the docu format and retains the true story aspect in his 2014 offering, got a taste for the film fest circuit with White Lines and the Fever – a documentary short that won big with the Special Jury Prize at SXSW and the Grand Jury Prize at Tribeca in 2010. Shot in Seattle, Washington in late 2011, Desert Cathedral was a featured project in the Us in Progress Paris edition 2012 (which included Hannah Fidell’s A Teacher) and will surely benefit from tech folk presence of the excellent composer team of Saunder Juriaans and Daniel Bensi (Martha Marcy May Marlene) and film editor Marc Vives...

Tonight, as the Tribeca Film Festival comes to an end, the Festival Awards were announced. This year the jury was comprised of Aaron Eckhart, Jessica Alba, Cheryl Hines, America Ferrera, Justin Bartha, Brooke Shields, Alicia Keys, Zach Braff, Aidan Quinn, Hope Davis, Gary Ross, Selma Blair, Peter Facinelli, Whoopi Goldberg and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey were among the 35 festival jurors.

Also Best Documentary Feature went to, “Monica & David” (USA) directed by Alexandra Codina. You can read my review of “Monica & David”. The film follows a married couple with Down Syndrome, learning to live together and wanting to gain more adult responsiblities was the most charming film I’ve seen during the festival. The couple accepted the award in New York City.

Hip-hop got its start in the economic warzone of the South Bronx in the 70’s and 80’s, where from absolutely nothing, a creative and vital musical source grew. White Lines & the Fever: The Death of DJ Junebug, directed by Travis Senger, is an incredible story not only about a forgotten musician who was taken too soon, but how hip-hop came from its roots to became a multi-million dollar industry. - This year at the Tribeca Film Festival showcases short films in six different "thematic" programs. Wishful Thinking is a package dominated by characters making hard decisions, while Between the Lines examines subject matter that isn’t always what it seems at first. The package Flashback, made up of six documentary shorts, explore politics, music, race, and popular culture, and give a fascinating diversity in telling these stories. Acclaimed Winnipeg filmmaker Guy Maddin has won the Best Experimental Short award at the 2010 SXSW Film Festival for Night Mayor. The film is a fictional documentary about Bosnian inventor Nihad Ademi who, in 1939, built a machine that harnessed the power of the Aurora Borealis to transmit images of Canadians to themselves.
Created as a tribute to the National Film Board of Canada’s 70th anniversary, Night Mayor playfully twists concepts of fact and fiction. Maddin describes the film as a documentary, even though his subject never actually existed, since it was shot documentary style with no planned action or script. Maddin assembled his cast and crew to document Ademi’s story as it may have happened and captured the action in his uncanny style of recreating time periods.
To see the director at work and to hear him describe his process, embedded below is a making-of clip posted on the Nfb’s website.

Though SXSW 2010 is only at the halfway point, the music portion is about to kick into high gear and many film folks are leaving town.
