MK2 Films has boarded Bernhard Wenger’s feature debut, “Peacock,” a tragicomedy headlined by Albrecht Schuch, the German actor who starred in “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “System Crasher.”
An up-and-coming Austrian director, Wenger developed the script at the Cannes Film Festival’s Cinefondation residency and was part of Berlinale Talents in 2020. His shorts, including “Keeping Balance,” “Guy Proposes to His Girlfriend on a Mountain” and “Excuse Me, I’m Looking for the Ping-Pong Room and My Girlfriend,” have played at festivals in Chicago, Palm Springs and Nashville, among others.
MK2 Films’ team, spearheaded by Fionnuala Jamison, is kicking off sales on “Peacock” at the American Film Market. The project is being pitched as a “corrosive comedy” capturing “the essence of human relationships.”
“Peacock” tells the story Matthias who works at a rent-a-friend agency and finds it increasingly difficult to open up again and be authentic in his private life.

All Quiet on the Western Front scooped the Best International Feature Film Oscar this evening, after earlier taking the Cinematography trophy and then winning for Production Design and Original Score. Such categories in which it is also nominated, including Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Sound are still to be unveiled. This is the first time a German title has taken the International Feature prize since 2006’s The Lives of Others.
In accepting the International Feature Oscar, director Edward Berger thanked his collaborators and family, and had special praise for an emotional All Quiet star Felix Kammerer saying, “This was your first movie and you carried us on your shoulders. Without you, none of us would be here.”
The last time Erich Maria Remarque’s classic anti-war novel was made as a theatrical motion picture was nearly a century ago, and it went on to take home Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director.

The Oscars 2023 has an impressive list of 10 Best Picture nominees. This year’s group ranges from big blockbusters, such as Avatar: The Way of Water, to a foreign war drama with All Quiet on the Western Front. Here’s a ranking of the Best Picture nominees ranked from worst to best.
10. ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Sigourney Weaver as Kiri | 20th Century Studios
James Cameron’s long-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water brings audiences back to the luscious world of Pandora. It’s a technical marvel, employing visual and auditory crafts to perfection. Cameron improves upon the first Avatar, but it misses out on a much-needed emotional impact. Perhaps one of the planned sequels will find a better balance and a more compelling story that could push it over the edge.

A version of this story about “All Quiet on the Western Front” first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The first German-language adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s classic anti-war novel about World War I, “All Quiet on the Western Front” is second only to “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and tied with “The Banshees of Inisherin” for the most Oscar nominations, nine. Among non-English films, only 2000’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and 2018’s “Roma” have ever received more nominations, and the six below-the-line noms for “All Quiet” tie it with “Crouching Tiger” for the most ever for a film not in English.
In addition to its Best Picture and Best International Feature Film nominations, the Netflix release has received noms for cinematography, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, sound, visual effects and adapted screenplay. At the Ee British Academy Film Awards on Feb.

There’s a lovely moment toward the end of All Quiet On The Western Front, sandwiched between several truly awful moments (and one absolutely devastating one). Felix Kammerer’s Paul Bäumer tries to walk his friend Kat (Albrecht Schuch) back to a field hospital in a church. He’s been shot, and he’s bleeding badly. Trying to stay chipper, Kat remembers a word game he used to play. You rhyme something with the last line someone sang. “Nothing rhymes with trifle,” Kat says. “Nothing.” Paul thinks. “Rifle rhymes with trifle,” he says. The two men laugh. It’s the last time anyone laughs in All Quiet On The Western Front.
Edward Berger. But it’s not your average war film. In Britain, the popular view of World War I is that phrase of the German General Ludendorff’s: that the heroic dead were lions led by donkeys in high command.

Elsewhere, Jennifer Garner joined the cast of “Party Down” Season 3 after 13 years away; James Marsden did, too, and he also hit more big parties all over Hollywood; the Daniels kept rolling with the DGA prize; and new filmmakers were given a huge step up by Sony Entertainment.

For much of this year’s awards conversation, The Banshees Of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once have dominated in the major categories – but at the 2023 BAFTAs_ that cleaned up. Edward Berger’s film bagged seven awards on the night including Best Film – building up momentum throughout the show as it won multiple technical categories and major gongs over the course of the ceremony.
“For a German-language film, we’ve been blessed with so many nominations, and winning this is just incredible,” said producer Malte Grunert on stage while picking up Best Film. The film’s big wins also came freighted with the relevancy of its World War I story. Upon winning Adapted Screenplay, writer-director Berger noted that in five days time it will be a year since war began in Ukraine, and stated that: “There are no heroes in any war.”

The BAFTA Awards were presented on February 19 by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). So who prevailed? Scroll down for the complete 2023 BAFTA Awards winners list in all categories.
BAFTA is an independent arts charity that comprises thousands of industry insiders, much like the American motion picture academy. The BAFTAs could well give us a preview of what the Oscars might do in three weeks time on March 12. And since voting for Oscars starts on March 2, just 11 days after the BAFTAs, these awards could be doubly influential.
However, the BAFTAs amended their nominations voting as of last year. After the initial longlists were decided, the nominees for acting and directing were chosen by small juries, leveling the playing field between the highest-profile awards contenders and worthy underdogs.

“All Quiet on the Western Front” dominated the BAFTA Awards nominations with 14 bids, tying “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000) as the most nominated non-English language film in BAFTA history. Edward Berger‘s German adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s classic novel is, unsurprisingly, expected to win Best Film Not in the English Language, but it’s only predicted to win two other awards — cinematography and sound — for a grand total of three. Is that too few for a film with 14 bids?
Perhaps. Eight of the last 10 years had nomination leaders in the double digits. Of those, five films took home at least five statuettes. “The Favourite” (2018) scored seven wins from 12 bids. “Gravity” (2013) nabbed six from 11. “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014) and “Dune” (2021) both netted five trophies from 11 nominations, while “La La Land” (2016) converted five of its 12 bids into wins.

The BAFTAs are the British equivalent of the Oscars, and due to their overlapping memberships, they might give us a preview of things to come. But the Brits might not be as interested in setting up the Oscars as they have been in recent years. For these awards a new jury system decided the nominees for acting and directing, leading to a unique lineup where most of the Oscar-nominated performers are missing and a number of under-the-radar contenders broke through instead.
The 76th annual BAFTA Awards nominations were revealed on January 19, just two days after the deadline for Oscar voters to weigh in with their choices for nominations.

“I was always a big fan of the original movie, but I did feel while watching subsequent American or British war films that is a question of perspective that I can’t tell,” All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger said of his motivation in finally bringing a German version of the iconic World War I tale to the big screen.
“There is a different perspective on the war, that they can go out of it with pride or honor even and victoriously — you can tell that type of story. In Germany, you can’t tell that story.”

The 1929 novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” has seen many adaptations. It first appeared in a German newspaper in 1928 before being published as a book in 1929. It was adapted into a film in 1930 and again into a TV film in 1979. The most recent iteration is a 2022 German anti-war film, which closely follows the original source material, and stars Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, and Daniel Brühl. After premiering at Toronto International Film Festival, it was submitted by Germany for the Academy Award for Best International Film and, on Tuesday, “All Quiet on the Western Front” received nine Oscar nominations. The 2023 Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday morning and included some shocking snubs in the acting races. Our overall odds at Gold Derby predicted 80 of the nominees for Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor. While we aced the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories, just three out of five of our predicted nominees in the other races are among those contending for the 95th Academy Awards.
Five SAG Awards nominated performers aren’t in contention at the Oscars: leads Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”), Viola Davis (“The Woman King”) and Adam Sandler (“Hustle”) as well as supporting players Eddie Redmayne (“The Good Nurse”) and Paul Dano (“The Fabelmans”).
Benefiting from those ruthless snubs were Andrea Riseborough, who redeemed herself after being ignored throughout most of the awards season for “To Leslie,” Michelle Williams (“The Fabelmans”), Judd Hirsch (“The Fablemans”) and Brian Tyree Henry (“Causeway’).

In typical awards season fashion, a category that seemed to have been thought of as sewn up may not be so clear-cut after all, which may be the case for the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar. For months, a myriad of pundits have been predicting United Artists’ “Women Talking,” directed and written by Sarah Polley and based on the novel by Miriam Toews, to triumph in this category, given the premise and intense nuanced dialogue that is the focus of the movie. But given its performance so far with awards bodies, it brings about a lot of questions in regards to what categories it will succeed in. On the other end of the spectrum, there is Netflix’s war epic “All Quiet on the Western Front,” a German-language adaptation of the 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque and directed by Edward Berger, that has surprised so far leading up to the nominations...

Think of the members of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts as tastemakers since the nominations they have determined for the 2023 BAFTA Awards will not have any effect on Oscars nominations (nominations voting closed January 17). Because of how schedules have fallen this year, they could have a small impact on the WGA Awards, which happen to still have nominations voting open until next Monday, but ultimately, the BAFTAs will mostly serve as a stage for expected frontrunners to give one more rousing speech before SAG Awards voting closes and final Oscars voting opens.
The biggest news to come from this year’s BAFTA nods is that Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” has hit a new peak in its awards campaign, receiving a record-tying 14 nominations—the most any film not in English has had since “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” and the most of any film since...

‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ Director ‘Speechless and Overwhelmed’ By Historic BAFTA Nominations
“All Quiet on the Western Front” director Edward Berger has said he is “speechless and overwhelmed” by the Netflix drama’s record-making BAFTA nominations.
The German helmer — best known for directing episodes of “Deutschland 83” and “Patrick Melrose” — also co-produced and wrote the World War One film. He called it “an enormous honor” to be acknowledged by the British Film Academy.
“All Quiet” picked up 14 nominations on Thursday — tying with “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” as the most-nominated non-English language film in the awards’ history. The film is also one of the most-nominated titles in BAFTA history, coming second (alongside 2007’s “Atonement”) only to “Gandhi” (1982).
Said Berger: “That the film has resonated with so many people is a testament to Erich Maria Remarque’s extraordinary book, written one hundred years ago and yet sadly still relevant today. It was our north star.
