J.J. Abrams is teaming up with HBO for a new series project called Glare, and no, the story doesn't revolve around Abrams' signature lens flares. The series is a sci-fi space exploration story about the colonization of another planet.
As of right now, that's the only information regarding the plot that we have so far. Abrams will serve as an executive producer on the series with Ben Stephenson and Javier Gullón, who is writing on the project. He wrote the script for Jake Gyllenhaal's Enemy.
Abrams is currently a producer on the HBO series Westworld, which just concluded its incredible first season! Hopefully he can bring his storytelling magic to this new series. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

J.J. Abrams is no stranger to space. Between Star Trek and Star Wars, he’s been all over the galaxy, but that’s not stopping him from returning, as he’s now set to produce Glare for HBO, an hourlong drama series exploring the colonization of another planet.
Glare marks Abrams’ second collaboration with HBO after serving as an executive producer on this fall’s exceptionally popular freshman series Westworld, which will return for a second season in 2018. Remember, it takes a while to make a show on that scale, and it might be some time before we see Glare hit television screens as well. It’s still in early development, with a scripting deal recently secured by Warner Bros. Television.

BBC's Controller of Drama Commissioning Ben Stephenson announced the projects at a keynote speech he gave at Miptv.
He said: "Both of these new commissions are passion projects for Jimmy McGovern and Tony Jordan - and are projects only the BBC would make."
McGovern has teamed up with Rsj Films to create an eight-part serial for BBC Two. The untitled series will be set in the late 1780s and will focus on the deportation of unwanted British citizens to the other side of the world.
The title and cast of the upcoming programme - which will be told through the eyes of convicts James Freeman, Tommy Barrett and Elizabeth Quinn - is expected to be announced in the coming months.
Meanwhile Tony Jordan - whose previous projects include Hustle, Life on Mars...

BBC drama controller Ben Stephenson and Piv Bernth, head of drama at Danish broadcaster Dr, home of the original The Killing and The Bridge, shared their views on co-productions this morning in Cannes. The duo, who each work for public broadcasters, also touched on dealing with U.S. partners and the courage of their convictions. Scandinavia is a hot spot for drama, but Bernth says she only gets 4% of Dr’s budget for drama so she’s “working with all kinds of different partners” and “trying to keep our feet on the ground.” She also confirmed that Killing creator Soren Sveistrup is working on a project for Cinemax, which he’ll present to the network within the next month. Stephenson is careful to avoid the dreaded “Europudding,” or what he terms “Mid-Atlantic pudding,” but says, “In the past, all countries thought their drama was their drama, but today actually we...

London -- Red Planet Pictures, the independent production company set up by award-winning writer Tony Jordan, has inked a deal to produce a five-part drama for BBC One as part of the channel’s programming around the centenary of World War One. Ben Stephenson, controller BBC Drama and Danny Cohen, controller BBC One, told attendees at Miptv in Cannes Tuesday. Billed as an epic series The Great War will tell its tale through the eyes of two ordinary young men who enlist in a war they expect will be over within months. BBC controller Ben Stephenson announced two big new projects this morning in Cannes. BAFTA-winning writer/producer Jimmy McGovern will make an epic eight-part serial about the origin of Australia after Britain sent its unwanted citizens there in the late 1780s. Shooting in Oz next year, the drama will be produced by McGovern’s Rsj Films. The BBC is in talks with co-producing partners and distributors on the as-yet untitled story that begins several months after the first fleet of petty thieves, whores, orphans and highwaymen arrives and is told through the eyes of three convicts. Stephenson tells me the drama will examine the theme of second chances. It’s not yet cast, but name talent is expected to board. The second new commission from the BBC is a five-part half-hour series The Great War which will be stripped over one week as part of the network’s Wwi centenary programming next year.

Greek myths, written by Misfits' Howard Overman, from the creators of Merlin, and starring this lot? Where do we sign?
We've been all a quiver about new BBC Saturday teatime drama Atlantis since it was announced in January, and today's cast list has done nothing to stem the enthusiasm.
Starring in the Howard Overman-scripted Ancient Greece adventure series will be Mark Addy, Juliet Stevenson, Sarah Parish, Jemima Roper, Robert Emms, Aiysha Hart and Jack Donelly (the latter recently seen as Misfits' White Rabbit). That's a combination of new and veteran UK acting talent the likes of which was last seen, well, probably in Merlin come to think of it. Do you know what else? We wouldn't be surprised if a few guest-stars tip up in the first season too...

The Zombie genre has its strong following of fans in the UK, as well as around the world. Many genres and visionaries have carved their own version of the undead, with many creative interpretations on screen. Films like Night Of The Living Dead provided us with the standard slow walkers, whilst 28 Days Later opted for a faster energetic take of zombies (which were called “the infected” but none the less have been pushed by mainstream media as zombies, so…). Television hasn’t been entirely focused on making zombie themed shows. The only show that has managed success has been AMC’s The Walking Dead, America’s highest rated cable series with over 11 million viewers a week.
Now, BBC Three is opting for a take on the zombie genre with In the Flesh, a three part drama focusing on a world where zombies have been integrated back into society, with conflicting views from the survivors.

Last month, the BBC's head of drama, Ben Stephenson, addressed a meeting of writers, commissioners and producers. One key passage could be distilled into two words: Danny Boyle. Stephenson told his audience he wanted them to seek inspiration from the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, which, he said, had scale and brilliance and, above all, had succeeded not in spite of its Britishness but because of its Britishness, delighting viewers here and around the world by rooting itself in the authentic stories and spirit of these islands.

Doctor Who's 50th anniversary is to be celebrated with a 3D special and screened in cinemas, the BBC announced this week.
The special birthday edition on 23 November will be shown exactly 50 years after the first episode, 'An Unearthly Child', starring William Hartnell in the title role appeared on TV.
Doctor Who's 30th anniversary was previously marked in 3D in 1993 when 'Dimensions in Time' was broadcast as part of Children In Need.
Steven Moffat, the show's lead writer and producer, said the latest 3D escapade on the BBC HD channel would bring a "whole new dimension of adventure for the Doctor to explore".

The BBC's Ben Stephenson has claimed that commissioning Sherlock was a "risk".
The Benedict Cumberbatch detective drama has proven to be a huge hit in the UK and Us, but Stephenson - the BBC's controller of drama commissioning - told The Hollywood Reporter that the show's "tone" made it a risk for the corporation.
"In my opinion, if you take risks with stories and writers, you will actually drive big audiences," he said. "For example, the tone of Sherlock only works on the BBC in this country. The risk we took with that tone drove the success of it internationally."
He continued: "[Sherlock] is a massive show internationally. It is in hundreds of territories internationally, is a hit in America and has made Benedict a star.
"That came out of the same approach and attitude that goes into our other work. Being popular is absolutely at the heart of what the BBC does.
