Daisy Ridley is having quite the year so far. Her new movie, Sometimes I Think About Dying, released in theaters earlier this month and is receiving positive notes. Her indie neo-noir movie Magpie is set to premiere at the SXSW film festival in March. The biopic Young Woman and the Sea, in which she stars as Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel, was originally slated for a Disney+ release may instead get a bump up to theatrical. Oh, and she’s filming a new action-thriller called Cleaner directed by 007 franchise legend Martin Campbell.
In between all that, Ridley is also of course answering plenty of questions about her upcoming return to Star Wars. The actor recently teased that her solo movie, which is set 15 years after the Sequel Trilogy and will follow Rey as she works to build a new Jedi Order, is taking...

The state of the Star Wars franchise in cinemas remains a bit unclear. Earlier this month, Lucasfilm announced The Mandalorian & Grogu, a movie to be directed by Jon Favreau based on the popular Disney+ series and that will set our lovable father and son duo on a brand-new adventure. It’s being fast-tracked into production this year, which suggests it’ll be the first new Star Wars movie to come out since The Rise of Skywalker bowed in Dec. 2019.
Interestingly, before that surprise announcement last week, it really seemed like the first movie on Lucasfilm’s docket was the untitled Rey movie, which is set to pick up 15 years after the events of the Sequel Trilogy. It’ll bring back Daisy Ridley to the galaxy far, far away to “build the New Jedi Order, based on the text that she was given and that Luke imparted on her,” as...

“Star Wars” director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is celebrating making franchise history.
The four-time Emmy winner and “Ms. Marvel” helmer told CNN that “it’s about time” a female filmmaker was behind a “Star Wars” film franchise installment. “Wonder Woman” filmmaker Patty Jenkins was previously attached to direct “Rogue Squadron” when it was announced in 2020; the film was removed from the Lucasfilm production calendar in 2021 and officially shelved in 2023.
“I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special,” Obaid-Chinoy said of her upcoming sequel to “The Rise of Skywalker,” adding, “We’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.”
Television director Obaid-Chinoy will make her narrative feature directorial debut with “Brilliance,” starring Will Smith. She will then helm the as-yet-untitled sequel starring Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker,...

“It’s not what I expected,” says Daisy Ridley as she offers a couple of her thoughts on her next Star Wars film.
The big reveal at this year’s Star Wars Celebration event was that Daisy Ridley would be returning to reprise her role as Rey Skywalker in a film currently slated for 2026.
While there are many out there that aren’t overly enamoured with the way the Rey’s story (and the entire sequel trilogy) concluded, a new film offers Lucasfilm a golden opportunity to take the type of creative risks that both the character and the wider films lacked throughout the sequel trilogy films.
Ridley has talked to Collider about the process of coming back to Star Wars, revealing that she only got the call a few weeks before the Celebration fan event where she was introduced to the world as the returning face of the franchise.

Daisy Ridley has shared some thoughts on her next Star Wars film where she will reprise her role as Rey.
Ridley spoke with Collider, telling the publication she was very nervous when she appeared at London’s Star Wars Celebration in April where it was announced that she would star in the new film, the first since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Ridley said she hadn’t even been approached about the role as of February 2023, just weeks before the Star Wars event.
The upcoming film from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, penned by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, will be set after the events of her previous movie in the franchise, Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, and as she builds a new Jedi Order. Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were previously attached to the project.

Is a "Peaky Blinders" movie coming? Probably. Is Cillian Murphy the best source for "Peaky Blinders" movie updates? Maybe not. In an interview with Radio Times ahead of the release of "Oppenheimer," Murphy hinted that he is not a huge fan of being treated like a Google search page when it comes to the future of the franchise. "That's probably the worst thing about 'Peaky Blinders' -- getting asked about the movie all the time!" the actor told the outlet with a laugh.
This shouldn't be surprising: It's Steven Knight, not Murphy, who made "Peaky Blinders" in the first place and who plans to cap its six seasons off with a movie. The series creator revealed plans for a feature film ending to the series -- which would also serve as a beginning for a spin-off -- before the sixth season had even aired, meaning fans who would have otherwise...

“Picketing Disney Is More Fun Than Writing a ‘Star Wars’ Movie”: Scribes Mark 100 Days of the Strike
Resolve and solidarity were the common refrains Wednesday as writers marked the grim 100-day milestone in the Writers Guild of America’s ongoing strike against Hollywood’s studios and streamers. Joined on the picket line by the similarly striking performers union, SAG-AFTRA, caffeinated scribes celebrated the two unions’ collective resolve on the day that WGA negotiating committee co-chair Chris Keyser called “an anniversary of shame for the AMPTP.”
Eric Robbins (Star Trek: Discovery), the lot coordinator at Disney, said the atmosphere Wednesday was positive, noting that the 100-day marker “rejuvenated and really invigorated” writers to return to the picketing, which he said “pumped a lot of lifeblood into the line.” After Friday’s meeting between the WGA and AMPTP yielded no signs of when both sides would return to the bargaining table, he said scribes have “as much passion and as much solidarity as we did on day one.”

Lucasfilm seems to finally be full steam ahead with its slate of Star Wars films. At Star Wars Celebration in April, studio president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed three new pictures set in the galaxy far, far away, including a Mandoverse event film to be directed by Dave Filoni and a Jedi origin movie from James Mangold. Then there’s perhaps the most surprising installment of the trio: a new Rey movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy that will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role just a few years after the release of The Rise of Skywalker.
Ridley’s return to her most famous role so soon after the end of her trilogy is unprecedented in Star Wars history, to say the least. There was a 32-year gap between Return of the Jedi and Mark Hamill’s return as Luke Skywalker in The Force Awakens, and it took 17 years to get Ewan McGregor...

The wonderful world of "Star Wars" has reached a crossroads yet again with another talented creative who has been asked to part ways with Lucasfilm. Fresh off the success of his new Peacock show, "Mrs. Davis," writer Damon Lindelof has revealed that his recent departure from a new potential feature film was not a mutual decision.
"I was in more than talks to join the Star Wars universe," Lindelof recently told Esquire (via Variety). "I joined the Star Wars universe and was asked to leave."
Lindelof initially signed on to co-write the new, then-under-wraps project with scribe Justin Britt-Gibson and "Ms. Marvel" director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy on board to direct. Damon Lindelof is opening up about his experience on a “Star Wars” project he was working on with writer Justin Britt-Gibson, telling Esquire (in an “Explain This” video that you can watch above) that “I was in more than talks to join the ‘Star Wars’ universe. I joined the ‘Star Wars’ universe and was asked to leave.” Ouch.
Still, Lindelof admits that he would still be up for tackling a story set in a galaxy far, far away. “Will I get back in line outside the club and try to get back in again? Absolutely,” Lindelof says in the video posted Friday. “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
The project that Lindelof and Britt-Gibson were writing is the untitled movie announced at Star Wars Celebration earlier this month, to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a documentarian who had helmed episodes of Disney+ and Marvel Studios’ “Ms. Marvel.

Damon Lindelof is opening up about his axed “Star Wars” movie.
After being announced as one of the directors for a future “Star Wars” franchise installment, the “Lost” creator confirmed he was “asked to leave” the Disney project before it got off the ground.
“I was in more than talks to join the ‘Star Wars’ universe,” Lindelof said as part of Esquire’s “Explain This” video series. “I joined the ‘Star Wars’ universe and was asked to leave.”
Rumors circulated that Lindelof’s script, co-written with Justin Britt-Gibson, followed an elderly Rey (played by Daisy Ridley in the latest trilogy) who was training two new Jedi knights, one of whom would be played by “Watchmen” actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Lindelof departed the project earlier this year.
In April 2023, Disney announced that documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy would instead be directing Ridley as Rey once more. “Peaky Blinders” writer Steven Knight penned the new script.

Damon Lindelof’s Star Wars Exit: ‘I Was Asked to Leave,’ but Would ‘Absolutely’ Try Again if Offered
Damon Lindelof’s exit from the Star Wars universe was not a mutual decision, the writer confirmed in a new Esquire interview. The “Lost” and “The Leftovers” co-creator boarded a new Star Wars movie in 2022 with “Ms. Marvel” director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attached to direct. Lindelof brought on Justin Britt-Gibson to co-write the project with him. The duo exited the film in February.
“I was in more than talks to join the Star Wars universe,” Lindelof told Esquire. “I joined the Star Wars universe and was asked to leave.”
Lindelof and Britt-Gibson were replaced as writers by Steven Knight, best known in recent years as the creator of “Peaky Blinders.” Obaid-Chinoy remained as director amid the screenwriting transition. Lindelof told Variety earlier this month that his script was “a true labor of love.”

Ashlyn Ni Fhearghail, an Irish transplant living in the Middle East, was standing on the convention floor at London’s Star Wars Celebration, dressed like one of her favorite characters, Rey, when she heard the news. In another part of the ExCeL center, Lucasfilm had just revealed that it was finally pulling the trigger on new Star Wars movies and one of them was going to center on Rey, the character made famous by Daisy Ridley in Disney’s sequel trilogy. To Ni Fhearghail, who had been standing with another fan dressed as Rey comparing costume notes, it was a sign. “We’re excited to see more movies with her and more movies in general,” she said.

Daisy Ridley is taking the lead in the next Star Wars cinematic event. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced the news at London's Star Wars Celebration on April 7, revealing that Ridley's character Rey will be the center of the franchise's first big-screen production since 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker." The new feature will follow Rey as she creates a new Jedi Order, per Variety.
"Ms. Marvel"'s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will direct the project based on a script by "Peaky Blinders" writer Steven Knight, who joined after the original writers, Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, exited the project earlier in 2023.

In a bid to reinvigorate the Star Wars film franchise, Lucasfilm has announced three new movies, as well as the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey. The news came during the Star Wars Celebration event in London on Friday, where Ridley made a surprise appearance alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
The movies don’t appear to be a classic Star Wars trilogy, as each is set in a different time period. Coming from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), the Rey-centered feature will pick up 15 years after Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Ridley’s fan-favorite character will be found coming into her role as a Jedi Master working to rebuild the Jedi order.
The script comes from Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), who took over screenwriting duties from Damon Lindelof (HBO’s Watchmen) and Justin Britt-Gibson (Counterpart) after the pair left the project in February. By taking on the project,...

Daisy Ridley will return to the galaxy far, far away and reprise her role of Rey (sometimes called Rey Skywalker) in one of the upcoming Star Wars films. The untitled project is set 15 years after the events of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” Ridley’s Rey will appear as Jedi master, teaching at a Jedi academy. “Star Wars” is back in the movie business. After eschewing movies since the launch of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019 and turning most of its attention to various TV series, the beloved franchise seems set to finally get three brand-new feature films.
As part of this year’s Star Wars Celebration in London, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced on Friday morning that a trio of new features are currently in the works. Those films include new joints from James Mangold, long-time “Star Wars” TV guru Dave Filoni, and Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s previously announced feature.
And, while details on most of these projects is, as expected, pretty slim, Kennedy did hit fans with some key details, including that Obaid-Chinoy’s film will see the return of Daisy Ridley to the franchise as her iconic character Rey. The “Star Wars” movie future just came into sharper focus: Daisy Ridley’s Rey will be the center of the first “Star Wars” feature film since 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced at Star Wars Celebration in London on Friday. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel”) will direct from a script by Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”). The film follows the events of “Rise of Skywalker,” and will focus on Rey as she builds a new Jedi Order.
The project marks several major milestones for the franchise: Obaid-Chinoy is the first woman and the first person of color to direct a “Star Wars” movie. The Pakistani filmmaker won two Academy Awards for documentary short, in 2011 for “Saving Face” and in 2015 for “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness,” and she most recently directed two episodes of “Ms. Marvel” for Disney+.
“It’s just exciting,” Jon Favreau told Variety after the panel.

From season 1, we were watching their journey together and how the two grew as a duo. In season 2, it was all about trying to get Grogu to the Jedi so he could find his ‘people,...

Never tell “Star Wars” the odds!
Things are moving faster than a Mos Espa podrace over at Lucasfilm. On Wednesday, we wrote that heavyweight writer-producer Damon Lindelof and his new partner (padawan?) Justin Britt-Gibson had walked away as writers of the upcoming (and untitled) “Star Wars” film. The project, currently more shrouded in more mystery than Emperor Palpatine, is set to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a “Ms. Marvel” vet and director-producer on a long list of documentaries.
But the Kathleen Kennedy-led production shingle has found its new scribe. Steven Knight, the writer-director of Tom Hardy vehicle “Locke” and creator of “Peaky Blinders,” is currently suiting up to travel to that galaxy far, far away. The British Knight has also written the screenplay for the Steven Frears film “Dirty Pretty Things,” the David Cronenberg film “Eastern Promises,” and the underrated Robert Zemeckis spy thriller “Allied.”
In addition to “Peaky Blinders,...

This week it was revealed that Lucasfilm had lost writers screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, as the pair left last month after working on the script for the latest “Star Wars” film, with two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel“) attached to direct. Disney had previously slated the next big theatrical release for December 19, 2015, and after Patty Jenkins‘ “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” getting shelved there were questions about what would take its place.

The first Star Wars film since The Rise of Skywalker has a brand new writer attached.
Damon Lindelof, the writer behind Lost, The Leftovers and Watchmen, was originally hired to co-write the forthcoming release alongside Justin Britt-Gibson. However, it was reported that the pair left the project in February.
Instead, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight will now write the film.
Variety reports that the film will be announced at Star Wars Celebration in London this April.
The Independent has contacted Lucasfilm for comment.
Knight’s previous acclaimed credits include Eastern Promises, Locke and Spencer.
However, he’s also received his fair share of criticism due to projects Burnt, Locked Down and the BBC’s new verson of Great Expectations, which begins on Sunday (26 March).
Other people to have either walked away from planned Star Wars projects or had their films shelved, in recent years include Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and Db Weiss,...

Just when you thought Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight couldn't get more prolific, he's gone and snagged himself a Star War. To be specific, the untitled Star Wars movie that Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson had been writing until recently.
According to Variety, Knight is now on board to script the mysterious movie, which still has documentarian and Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy on board to film.
This would mark yet another shift for Knight, who has shown himself able to script everything from Dickens to Dirty Pretty Things to Diana. And while he's tackled sci-fi with See, the idea of his brain unleashed on the galaxy far, far away is quite the prospect to consider.
We're expecting more news on this (assuming the Lucasfilm is ready to announce) at Star Wars Celebration, this year running 7-10 April in London at ExCeL.

The wild, wild world of "Star Wars" has been rocked by yet another creative attachment. Variety reports that the currently untitled "Star Wars" film that Lucasfilm has been developing for "Ms. Marvel" director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has got a new, big-name writer on board after the high-profile departure of Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson.
That new writer is none other than "Peaky Blinders" creator Steven Knight.
Now, we don't know much of anything about this new "Star Wars" movie. Is it a one-off? Is it the start of a brand new saga told in this universe? Maybe it's Episode 10 and will pick back up with Rey, Finn, and Poe? We have no idea, but we do know that Lucasfilm took a break from their theatrical "Star Wars" projects after wrapping up the Skywalker Saga with "Star Wars: Episode 9 — The Rise of Skywalker," much to the chagrin of a ton of creatives...
