The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival has been plunged into chaos a month before its 2024 edition.
The opening press conference in Toronto on Tuesday was overshadowed by news that the Hot Docs artistic director, Hussain Currimbhoy, and 10 programmers had left the festival organizing team ahead of the 2024 edition kicking off on April 25.
Hot Docs in a festival statement confirmed Currimbhoy’s departure as artistic director on March 20, “due to personal reasons.” “Regrettably, some members of the programming team have decided not to participate in this year’s festival. We thank them for their contributions,” the documentary festival added.
Their departure forced Hot Docs president Marie Nelson — the former ABC News and Disney exec who took the helm at the Canadian festival in June 2023 — onto the back foot when she stepped forward to unveil the lineup for the 2024 edition.
“We understand that our union is far from perfect, but I...

Samantha Bee’s “Full Frontal” is getting a kick in the rear from Warner Bros. Discovery.
The show, which became a signature program for the large cable network TBS, “will not return to the network in the fall,” according to a statement from Bee’s representatives.
“As we continue to shape our new programming strategy, we’ve made some difficult, business-based decisions,” TBS said in a statement. “We are proud to have been the home to ‘Full Frontal With Samantha Bee’ and thank Sam, and the rest of the Emmy-nominated team for their groundbreaking work. We celebrate this extraordinarily talented cast and crew and look forward to exploring new opportunities to work with them in the future.”

In the wake of the school shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, TBS’ “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” has turned its sights on the National Rifle Association (NRA). On Thursday’s episode, Bee tracked the development of the NRA over the years from its origins to the more familiar institution we know today. “Full Frontal” correspondent Amy Hoggart also headed to Houston for the NRA’s annual convention, which took place just four days after the tragic event and just 300 miles away from Uvalde.
“It’s really happy inside,” one attendee said of the mood at the convention. “It’s kind of like a little party. It’s pretty sweet.”
When asked about the Uvalde shooting, another NRA convention attendee said that “everyone is extremely upset about the timing” and that it was “incredibly, incredibly awkward.” Noting that the shooting took place during an election week and right before the annual event,...

Samantha Bee has brought Full Frontal home during the coronavirus pandemic, filming a new episode of the late-night show in the forest behind her house.

Many late-night hosts have regular segments they can turn to again and again to get laughs. Seth Meyers has “A Closer Look.” Jimmy Kimmel has “Mean Tweets.” Jimmy Fallon has his “Thank You Notes.” And James Corden has “Carpool Karaoke.”
On “Full Frontal,” one of TBS’ late-night entries, host Samantha Bee has none of those things. With a program that airs once a week, she doesn’t have the luxury of relying on regular concepts. “We expect to change things up for our personal interests,” says Bee in a recent interview. “I like to reinvent things as much as possible.”
Over the course of four seasons (the show’s fifth cycle just got underway), Bee has changed the set, the opening, and in recent weeks, some of her regular contributors and head writers. Earlier this month, “Full Frontal” elevated Mike Drucker and Kristen Bartlett to head writer titles, replacing Melinda Taub.

After bouncing its gritty drama “Snowpiercer” from TNT to TBS and back to TNT again, the networks formerly known as Turner experienced a bit of a brand identity crisis last year.
But as its execs prepare to launch the streaming service HBO Max, they’re also re-establishing unique brand markers for basic cable flagships TNT, TBS and TruTV.
Brett Weitz, who was promoted to general manager of the three networks in October, detailed each network’s distinctiveness to reporters on Wednesday at the Television Critics Association press tour. TNT will focus on “big, lean-forward thrilling television,” like live sports, its movie package and big-budget dramas. TBS will continue to be comedy-focused, including hour-long shows. And TruTV will mix unscripted with edgy comedy series.
As HBO Max launches, Weitz said WarnerMedia is still fully invested in the three networks, which he said are still in 96 million homes. “We evolve them, we...

TBS has renewed Full Frontal With Samantha Bee for a fifth season and has extended its first-look deal with Bee’s production company Swimsuit Competition.
The WarnerMedia-owned network is bringing back the Emmy-winning late-night show through 2020, which will give Bee the opportunity to skewer candidates across election season.
The first four seasons have run between 30 and 40 episodes per year.
The series, which airs Wednesdays at 10:30 Pm, is executive produced by Bee, Jason Jones, Tony Hernandez, Miles Kahn, Alison Camillo and Pat King.
The extension of the first-look deal will see Bee and her production company look to develop more originals. Swimsuit Competition recently began production on the untitled Amy Hoggart project, starring Full Frontal correspondent Amy Hoggart, for TBS. It will now search for more ideas from people “who are flying under the radar, or whose work has been underestimated.”

Veteran Full Frontal with Samantha Bee correspondent Amy Hoggart is stepping into the spotlight to lead a new show on TBS. The WarnerMedia cable outlet said today that it has ordered the series that will tackle everyday problems through Hoggart’s unique kaleidoscope of humor.
Blending scripted and unscripted segments, each episode of the nonpolitical Untitled Amy Hoggart Project will tackle an issue that makes American lives harder. Completely underqualified, the wounded wannabe psychologist Hoggart will go to ridiculous lengths to focus on such topics as monogamy and polyamory, friendship and shame –- always aiming to make everyone feel just a little bit better.
Samantha Bee is among the executive producers on the series, and Hoggart — who wrote and starred in the faux-reality series Almost Royal — will continue as a Full Frontal correspondent.

Among the yuletide firsts that can almost certainly be claimed by Samantha Bee and her Full Frontal TBS Christmas On I.C.E. special tonight is a joyful little musical rhyming of “holiday season” with “lies and treason.”
“Maybe the first,” Bee conceded of the lyric during a recent chat with Deadline, “but maybe not the last.”
Set on a festively decorated set – complete with indoor skating rink, and featuring guest appearances by Jeff Goldblum, Ana Gasteyer and others, including a surprise visitor from Bee’s Daily Show past – Christmas on I.C.E., like the usual episodes of Full Frontal, presents the newsy through the comedic, but this time around focuses on a single issue (the “I.C.E.” pun gives it away): immigration, or, more specifically, the Trump administration’s very un-Christmasy treatment of migrants seeking asylum, complete with immigrant families still torn apart.

Samantha Bee believes that the U.S. has a lot to apologize for since Donald Trump became president. So “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” announced this week that it will launch the “Apology Race” — an “Amazing Race”-like segment to dispatch correspondents around the world to say “sorry” to people for “every garbage thing” President Donald Trump has done so far. In a video shared on the show’s social media channels on Tuesday, the TBS show announced that Amy Hoggart, Mike Rubens, Allana Harkins and Ashley Nicole Black would be among the stars racking up frequent-flier miles over the next two weeks...

Since its premiere last year, “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” has been killing it — and while Bee and her staff were recognized last year at the Emmys with a nomination for writing, this year one of television’s most fiercely political series deserves far more appreciation.
This isn’t to undersell the work of showrunner Jo Miller and Bee’s talented writers. In fact, it’s worth noting that Bee is the kind of host who doesn’t mind sharing the spotlight with other talent, letting correspondents like Ashley Nicole Black and Amy Hoggart contribute segments either in studio or from the field. (Another host demonstrating the same sort of class: Seth Meyers, who has let staff writers Amber Ruffin and Jenny Hagel basically steal the show from time to time.)

When Full Frontal With Samantha Bee first launched on TBS in February 2016, it was heralded for the fact that a woman was finally entering the late-night fray, cracking the glass ceiling sealed shut by the likes of Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert and John Oliver. It was a fact that the host even seemed to lament, considering she spent 12 years on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart before landing a production deal with TBS, which also airs The Detour, a scripted comedy she co-created and executive produces with husband Jason Jones. But Full Frontal quickly proved it was more than just a late-night show hosted by a woman -- it had a whole different point of view.
“We always wanted to do the show from a really authentic place deep down inside our bellies, and we are 100 percent doing that,” Bee told Rolling Stone a month into the series, as it was very much defining its tone --...

Full Frontal sent correspondent Amy Hoggart to Scotland to learn about resisting oppression from people who have been resisting Trump since he built Trump International Golf Links in their country. More than a decade ago, he descended on the country promising to create 6,000 job and telling TV reporters, “I’m an artist and this is probably the greatest piece of canvas that anybody's ever worked on.” “Ugh, why is it always failed artists,” Hoggart groans. First, she…...

While making fun of the royal family is a national pastime across the pond, here our take on royalty is mingled with a curiosity about something that seems glamorous -- from a distance. BBC America's first comedy series, "Almost Royal," proposes to plop two young British aristocrats in our backyard to see how they take to 'Murican ways. The show, which stars Ed Gamble (Georgie) and Amy Hoggart (Poppy), tears a page out of the Sacha Baron Cohen rulebook by letting the actors interact with real people. Real people including Fabio. That happens. "Almost Royal" premieres with back-to-back episodes Sat., June 21, 10:00pm Et following the "Orphan Black" season two finale. As we see in the trailer, sibling Georgie and Poppy Carlton are 49th and 50th in line for the throne, and they've agreed to let a camera crew follow them around on an unofficial tour of America with stops in Los Angeles,...
