“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” made a surprise appearance on the theatrical release calendar this October and has already become the second-highest grossing concert documentary ever, drawing in fans who wanted to re-experience her Eras Tour in movie form and those who weren’t able to catch this summer’s concert. But while “The Eras Tour” movie still isn’t the top music doc (yet), it’s something of an outlier when it comes to just how much it’s made at the box office — $178 million and counting.
Several other big-name musicians and bands have released documentaries about their tours or certain albums, but the only ones to come close to the success of “The Eras Tour” include Michael Jackson and Justin Bieber, so far. Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” tour documentary, slated for a Dec. 1 release, could further shake up the stats and the box office.

To get this out of the way up top: No one is Taylor Swift.
This was the unanimous refrain among players who make and distribute concert films and music documentaries when asked what Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour means for the space. Nonetheless, insiders note that Swift’s is a rising tide that lifts all boats, with artists and their teams already making calls and taking cues from Swift’s Eras deal, which sees her keep an outsized portion of the film’s $160.4 million global haul after its second weekend in release.
According to a survey of 6,000 moviegoers by NATO’s Cinema Foundation, 72 percent said they want to see more concert films on the big screen. But that content has not been available with consistency.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is back to eat the weekend box office with a fork and knife as the concert film grooves to $5.9M as an estimated Thursday total. The Sam Wrench-directed movie gives Swifties a front-row seat to one of the most in-demand tours in decades, pulling $98.7M at 3,855 theaters overall. These numbers are all the more impressive, considering the Eras Tour exits theaters Monday through Wednesday, building hype for a weekend-centric theatrical event.
Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon also screened in cinemas on Thursday, blooming with $2.6M in previews. Showings for Scorsese’s latest epic – which we loved – began at 2 p.m. due to the film’s 3 hours and 26 minutes runtime. No one knows if Flower Moon can defeat The Eras Tour at the box office this weekend. However, analysts predict another impressive weekend for the blonde bombshell from West Reading, Pennsylvania.

The Fall season has been a little bit quiet at the box office thus far, save for a couple of horror hits like "Saw X" and "The Nun II." But Taylor Swift has changed all of that with her blockbuster "The Eras Tour" concert film. Swift unexpectedly announced in late August that her global hit tour was coming to movie theaters, allowing everyone the chance to see what all the fuss was about. The move was a major surprise, particularly because it was being distributed directly by AMC Theatres. It also worked like gangbusters, as the film posted one of the biggest opening weekends of the year.
"Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" opened to $92.8 million, per The Numbers, making it instantly the highest-grossing concert film ever at the domestic box office in mere days. Yes, that number was a little below industry projections, which had it taking in $100 million or more in North America but,...

In another remarkable turn in a year full of unlikely box office heroes, pop star Taylor Swift is now the heroine of the fall moviegoing season. As expected, her concert film "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" became a bonafide blockbuster when it hit theaters over the weekend. It scored one of the biggest domestic openings of 2023 thus far and, in the process, shattered a longstanding box office record. Move over Justin Beiber because the Swifties have booted you off the top of the mountain.
"The Eras Tour" took in a wildly impressive $97 million over the weekend in North America alone, per estimates from The Numbers. That's to say nothing of the international numbers. In a single weekend, Swift has taken the crown and now owns the highest-grossing concert film ever domestically, passing "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" ($73 million domestic/$99 million worldwide). That film was released in 2011 at the height of Bieber's initial fame wave,...

Following a $100 million box office ticket advance, the 3-hour concert movie "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour", directed by Sam Wrench, has earned a domestic gross of $96 million and international $32 million, for a 3-day worldwide gross of $128 million:
"...after negotiations with the major film studios fell through, Swift struck an unprecedented distribution agreement with AMC and Cinemark.
"Filming occurred August 2023 at three shows at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, and SAG-AFTRA permitted the production to proceed during the recent actors strike.
"Swift announced 'The Eras Tour' later that month, catching studios and exhibitors off guard...
"...causing several films that had been set for release on or near October 13 to move their release dates.
" The film's unconventional release strategy generated considerable media attention...
"...with many praising Swift's move to bypass the studios to directly partner with theaters.
"The film has been met with significant ticket demand, so far earning $100 million in global pre-sales.

Taylor Swift’s concert documentary “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” was as brilliant in the theater as it was to witness from the nosebleeds of SoFi Stadium. I won’t say it was better because the collective effervescence of a concert cannot be created without an arena setting and thousands of screaming Swifties, but the film transported me.
The only expectations that weren’t met (because the unexpected is almost always expected from Swift) were those that imply she may hint at the next re-record — rumored to be “Reputation,” which came out originally in 2017 — or anything of that nature.
With the grand entrance Swift makes at the start of the concert memorialized on film in high definition, the “Eras” tour became cemented in history and popular culture. Taylor Swift‘s “experiment” to release a 2-hour-48-minute concert movie based on her “Eras” tour turned out to be quite a boon for the box office in a slower fall season. Read on for the weekend box office report.
“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” was announced in late August, shortly after the five L.A. concerts that were filmed for the movie, directed by Sam Wrench. Theater chain AMC took the distribution rights, working with Variance to get it into other theaters, with it ultimately ending up in 3,855 theaters, including 377 IMAX screens.
The movie’s weekend began with $2.8 million in last-minute Thursday previews, only announced by Swift on Wednesday night at her L.A. premiere with tickets going on sale Thursday morning. The movie’s $39 million Friday (including those previews) was more in line with advance presales reported, but business dropped on Saturday, so that AMC only reported an...

Updated: Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour may have missed the century mark in regards to a domestic opening, but the 12x Grammy winner was always guaranteed that number worldwide, with AMC reporting this Am that the Sam Wrench-directed concert pic has racked up $126M-$130M. The international box office opening is estimated at $31M-$33M. AMC is reporting a range à la North America; this the first time the circuit has handled a global theatrical-day-and-date release of this magnitude. Note, we never saw this hitting $200M WW; overseas was always going to be light and at this point remains at the lower-end of expectations.
AMC is calling the domestic opening between $95M-$97M today, however, rival studios see it lower at $94.3M. At the latter level, it’s the second best opening for October Stateside. Anything north of Joker‘s $96.2M stateside debut is an October domestic opening record.

In our ever-fracturing pop cultural landscape, very few things exist in the monoculture, where their omnipresence is something to either gravitate towards or run away from as fast as possible. Right now, Taylor Swift probably stands atop that mountain, and her record-breaking, monumental stadium show "The Eras Tour" is her victory lap. My relationship with Swift has evolved quite a lot over time. In the beginning, I didn't really pay much attention. This wasn't due to some knee-jerk aversion to her or her music. I have just never really been on the pulse of contemporary music, which is something I continuously try to rectify. So, I missed out on her country-girl roots and transition to full-on pop music. I knew of her as a public figure, and considering I could not care less about a celebrity's personal life, it was easy to tune out.

Several IndieWire staffers met up Friday night for what was supposed to be opening night of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” at a NYC theater. Anticipation? High. Energy level? Even higher. Drinks consumed? Unprecedented.
Taylor’s Eras tour concert film is so much concert film. It’s nearly three hours long and Swift is her supernova self, hustling through 17 years of music with eras both mellow and nostalgic. (A high point in our particular theater was the euphoric in-your-seat dancing to high school throwback “You Belong with Me.”) While the audience energy level was definitely higher than the kind you’d find with your typical Friday night cinephiles, the crowd mostly remained seated, and the singing along was kept simply to key lyrics.
It was a night filled with friendship bracelets, light up Taylor glow sticks (more on that later), and at least one homemade Taylor T-shirt.

“Deadpool 3” and “Stranger Things” director Shawn Levy is showering praise on this weekend’s box office ruler, Taylor Swift, calling her a “generational voice and creative force” and likening her directorial vision to that of Steven Spielberg.
Swift, whose cinematic rendering of the blockbuster Eras Tour is poised to rake in north of $100 million this weekend, directed Levy as an actor in her 2021 short film, “All Too Well,” which also starred Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien. The pop star has set her feature directorial debut project with Searchlight Pictures.
“Taylor, the depth of her vision for how she wants a creative piece to be, whether it’s a lyric, a melody, a bridge, a concert tour, a video — it’s profound. It’s profoundly vivid and she has the strength of her convictions,” Levy said told Entertainment Weekly. “Spielberg was on the set of a movie he produced that I directed,...

The first of many great moments in Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour movie: Right as the lights went down, the girl in Row H spoke up. “Oh my God, I should have asked permission before now, but we’re all gonna sing, right?” she pleaded in the dark. “Because I wanna sing!” A woman seated a few rows in front replied, “Sing loud and proud, sister.” And that’s all the discussion anyone needed about that. Following the news that dancing and singing will be allowed at screenings of the Taylor Swift movie, Jimmy Fallon has a pitch for the next iteration of Swift’s Eras Tour.
“The movie’s so popular that they’re going to have to start showing it in stadiums, and it’s going to be called ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour: The Movie: The Tour,'” the “Tonight Show” host said during his opening monologue Wednesday night.
He also noted that Swift is so powerful that “she can get people to a mall.”
“At this point the United States is essentially a Taylor Swift-based economy,” Fallon joked.
Fallon didn’t stop there with the Swift jokes. He concluded his opening monologue with an iteration of Swap Quiz. “The Tonight Show” team asked father and daughter duos around 30 Rockefeller questions about Taylor Swift and her latest love interest, Kansas City Chiefs Travis Kelce.

You probably don’t need this review to tell you if you’ll enjoy Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour as a movie. You can surely already guess, based on how much you enjoyed (or think you might have enjoyed) Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour as a concert. Because this movie is exactly no more and no less than what it says on the tin: a filmed version of Swift’s record-breaking show, captured over three performances in Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium. Aside from a few onstage “bloopers” over the closing credits, there’s next to nothing in the way of supplementary material — no interviews, no behind-the-scenes footage, no commentary on what any of this means.
But what a concert it is — and what an experience it makes, even in the relatively modest confines of a movie theater.
As has been exhaustively documented over the past seven months, the Eras Tour...

“When will Taylor Swift’s film career take off?” has been a question lurking in the back of a lot of people’s minds ever since she started getting her feet wet with bit parts in “The Giver” and “Valentine’s Day” … and then further limited herself to keeping her toes damp with “Cats” and “Amsterdam” cameos. But do we finally have an answer to that question now, or what? Nobody should suppose that “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” doesn’t count as establishing her as a movie star, just because it’s a straightforward rendering of an ongoing concert tour that’s soon to become the most successful in history. It’s 2 hours and 45 minutes of nearly nonstop acting, writ large for the back row of SoFi Stadium and, now, Imax and Dolby. What she might do with lengthy dialogue passages someday remains to be seen, but she’s...

Updated: Taylor Swift arrived tonight in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles for the premiere of her Eras Tour concert film premiere at The Grove, generating more noise and glitz than an Oscar Best Song performance atop the Academy Museum. Heck, the fountain at the outdoor luxe Rick Caruso-owned mall was spouting pink water.

Taylor Swift made a movie star appearance at the world premiere of her The Eras Tour concert film Wednesday at The Grove’s AMC Theatre.
The superstar — who just before the Los Angeles event announced her film would debut Thursday in North America instead of its initial Friday night release date — arrived early and posed for photos with her team and with director Sam Wrench before quickly running inside. Hundreds of fans lined the theater entrance, trading friendship bracelets and singing Swift’s hits as she stopped for selfies with many of them. Stars including Rachel Zegler, Maren Morris, Simu Liu, Julia Garner, Mariska Hargitay and Adam Sandler were among the attendees, along with Swift’s mother Andrea and father Scott. Beyoncé — who has her own concert film, Renaissance, being released through AMC in December — also made a surprise appearance at the event, posing alongside Swift on the carpet.

Movie theater employees have just come off of one of the biggest summers of film releases in recent years. Between Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, they have witnessed endless seas of hot pink outfits and film bros dying to mansplain World War II.
