Colette Marin-Catherine and Lucie Fouble honour Colette’s brother Jean-Pierre in Anthony Giacchino’s Oscar-winning Colette
On April 25, 2021 Colette Marin-Catherine celebrated her 93rd birthday in France. Later that day, the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony was held in Los Angeles, which turned out to be not only a big night for Nomadland director Chloé Zhao when Marlee Matlin signed Colette, directed by Anthony Giacchino and produced with Alice Doyard as the winner of the Documentary Short Oscar.
Anthony Giacchino on Colette Marin-Catherine: “Today is Colette’s birthday, She was born just 22 days before the very first Oscars in 1929.”
In accepting the Oscar in person Anthony Giacchino remarked: “Thank you to the Academy. I hope the actors in the room don’t mind that I have something written down here, because there are all different kinds of people in the Academy. Today is Colette’s birthday, She was born just 22 days before...

South Korean media were quick to celebrate veteran Youn Yuh-jung’s best supporting actress Oscar win for “Minari” — the first Oscar acting prize ever for Korea. Official Chinese media, on the other hand, were much quieter about the triple triumph for “Nomadland” by Chloe Zhao.
The Korea Herald newspaper ran a splash story and picture as the lead in its English-language edition on Monday morning local time. The Korea Times did the same and included a Yonhap news agency follow-up story titled “Korean Film Industry People Shine At Oscars For Second Year In A Row.”
The Korean Film Council did not immediately update its website, but used its Kobiz Twitter account to announce the facts: “Youn yuhjung Wins Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.”

Seventy women representing a record 76 Oscar nominations translated to a record number of female wins Sunday with 17 awards, beating a previous high of 15 set in 2019 and running the gamut from Best Director and Best Picture to Original Screenplay, Animated Film and Original Song.
The 2019 Oscars, for films out in 2018, had the same number of women winners but fewer awards. Two of the nominees, Chloé Zhao and Frances McDormand took home two awards each — all for Nomadland. This year’s awards were also more prominent. Winners from both years included the two acting awards.
“What an incredible night full of firsts for women,” said Kirsten Schaffer, executive director of Women In Film, LA, calling the night “a great celebration of talent and an inspiration for all of the women who work in the screen industries especially those behind the camera.”
“Fifteen women won 17 awards tonight with the first time for Black women in hair and makeup,...

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Electronic Arts are celebrating an Oscar victory in the most unlikely of categories…Best Documentary Short Subject.
Colette, directed by Anthony Giacchino and produced by Alice Doyard, was co-produced by Facebook-owned Oculus Studios and Electronic Arts’ Respawn Entertainment. The Guardian newspaper acquired and distributed the film, which tells a story out of World War II and the French Resistance. It is the first Oscar for Oculus and Respawn, as well as for The Guardian, according to a publicist for the film.
“I want to thank our amazing E.P., Peter Hirschmann, at Electronic Arts, everyone at Electronic Arts and Respawn,” Giacchino said during his acceptance speech, “and Oculus, especially Vince, Dusty and Mara.” He also saluted Charlie Phillips, head of video at The Guardian.
Colette is available as an add-on experience within EA’s Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, a member of the filmmaking team tells Deadline.

In Anthony Giacchino’s inspiring Oscar-nominated Best Documentary Short, Colette, produced by Alice Doyard, we meet 90-year-old Colette Marin-Catherine, a remarkable woman, who shares with us a journey into a private reckoning that reflects the history of the 20th century. Together with 17-year-old student historian Lucie Fouble, Colette for the first time crosses the border from France into Germany to visit the location of the concentration camp Dora-Mittelbau in Thuringia, where her brother Jean-Pierre was sent after he had been arrested in Normandy as a member of the Resistance. He was 17 when he arrived at Dora on February 11, 1945 and died only weeks before the camp was liberated by the Allies.

A romantic notion persists that after the Nazis conquered France in 1940 almost the whole French nation rose up heroically to join the Résistance. Not so, as the Oscar-shortlisted short documentary Colette affirms.
“There was 1-percent of the population who were actually resisting,” producer Alice Doyard notes of the period before the allies liberated the country. “One-percent of the population was actively collaborating. And the rest…were just pondering. Waiting to see what’s going to happen.”
One family that did join the Resistance was the Catherines—mother and father and their two children, 17-year-old Jean-Pierre and 14-year-old Colette. In the documentary Colette, now 92, recalls her time in the Resistance, but downplays her role.
“I wasn’t asked to blow up a train or a bridge,” she says modestly. Nevertheless, her work to monitor the movement of trucks en route to the front at Cherbourg, as well as passing ration cards...
