I love a twisted party-horror flick like Talk to Me, Bodies Bodies Bodies, or the incredibly underrated +1 (aka Plus One but not the Jack Quaid and Maya Erskine movie), which might explain my adoration of Greg Jardin’s It’s What’s Inside. You might recognize the title for its astounding $17 million sale to Netflix out of Utah’s Sundance Film Festival, which is money well spent for the streamer. Jardin writes, directs, and edits a shifty yet cleanly conveyed science fiction thriller that feels akin to the functional simplicity of Shane Carruth’s Primer meets a boozy [redacted as per filmmaker and studio wishes]. Filmmakers who’ve tackled similarly fantastical concepts have stumbled over needlessly complicated narratives, while Jardin focuses on digital-age comedics and dire consequences that entertain with ease.
We first meet struggling couple Shelby (Brittany O'Grady) and Cyrus “The Virus” (James Morosini): stagnant, physically starved "lovers" who get into heated arguments about when to have sex.

Sissy, a very sassy and diabolically entertaining new Australian horror movie from director-writing team Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes, puts in its satirical crosshairs two things once believed to be good for humankind, but now widely regarded as evidence of our continued descent into self-inflicted destruction: social media and the wellness industry.
Cecilia, Aka Sissy (Aisha Dee), is an influencer and self-professed “mental health advocate” desperate to keep the likes and engagements coming. The film’s sardonic commentary about “wellness” and the depravities of online existence are closely linked with her vainglorious personality and cringe-inducing behaviour. It's high time that someone rewrote Andy Williams' hit single "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" to be about Halloween instead of the godforsaken hellscape known as Christmas. With October officially in bloom and everyone currently scrambling to figure out what to wear this All Hallow's Eve, there's no better time to curl up with a good scary movie. Fortunately, every streaming service understands the value of a good horror movie in October, and the options for one good scare are limitless. Whether it's ghosts, aliens, slashers, psychological nightmares, or even animals run amok, there's absolutely something for everyone.
The classic holiday favorites like "Halloween," "Trick 'r Treat," "Psycho," "The Exorcist," and "The Shining" have all been recommended time and time again, but there's a rich throng of horror movies ready and waiting for your viewing pleasure. In an age where the number of likes, retweets and follows you get is more valuable currency than money itself, it’s no surprise that the horror genre has taken to incorporating things like influencer culture into their social commentary. That’s just what happens in Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes‘ darkly comedic satire Sissy, which follows social media influencer Sissy Cecilia as past traumas resurface during a bachelorette party weekend that turns murderous.
Sissy follows Cecilia and Emma, two teenage friends who were inseparable until Alex (Emily De Margheriti) arrived on the scene and bullied Cecilia, leading to a violent incident that forced the two to part ways. Twelve years later, Cecilia is a successful social media influencer with 200,000 followers living the dream of an independent, modern millennial woman. Stars: Aisha Dee, Hannah Barlow, Emily De Margheriti, Lucy Barrett, Yerin Ha, Daniel Monks | Written and Directed by Hannah Barlow, Kane Senes
A social media influencer unravels when she accidentally meets her childhood bully in this blackly comic horror, co-written and co-directed by Australian husband-and-wife filmmakers Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes. With a thematically rich, genre-savvy script, some delightfully nasty gore moments and a terrific central performance from Aisha Dee, this is one of the best horror movies of the year.
Sissy centres on Cecilia (Dee), who used to be called Sissy at school, where she was the target of bullying. Now in her early 20s, Cecilia has reinvented herself as a social media influencer, offering self-help advice and mental health tips. However, there are hints that Cecilia’s life isn’t quite as together as she likes to make out, at least if the off-camera state of her apartment is anything to go by.

"We made a horror film and it's found this wonderful audience. It's definitely unexpected. And I wouldn't even necessarily say that our film is a straight horror film, but obviously as soon as you squash someone's head, it tends to not really fall in any other genre, no matter what the rest of the movie's about."

Sissy
Few genre film this year have made quite as much impact as Sissy, an Australian horror comedy with important subtext about bullying, social media, and how we process our negative experiences. It stars Aisha Dee as the title character (who now prefers to be called Cecilia), a young woman who has built up a following as an internet self-help guru, whose carefully constructed world falls apart when she once again comes face to face with the girls who made her miserable at school. Stylistically informed by the slasher movies of the Eighties and Nineties, it takes a slightly different approach as a series of violent altercations are seen from the perspective of this troubled lead.
“I think we wanted to expand the horror genre and the slasher tropes to subvert them some in some way,” says co-director Hannah Barlow, who also stars in the film as Cecilia’s sometime best.

There’s some delicate subject matter at the heart of Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes’ Sissy. It’s unavoidable when you’re spring-boarding from an objectively tragic event that occurred during childhood. While young Sissy may have been the one who physically assaulted Alex when they were age twelve, that isolated and impulsive act of violence was ignited by months or years of psychological torment inflicted by the injured. Does the event make Sissy a monster regardless of those circumstances? Or can society look beyond the visual aftermath and see the invisible pain that drove her to do what she did? Is Sissy still the good person she believes she is or a villain—a “psychopath”—that Alex will justifiably never forgive? The filmmakers daringly choose a bit of both.
Herein lies the problem: allowing us to even think Cecilia is a psychopath provides unfortunate implications. It absolves Alex (Emily De Margheriti...

One of the most talked-about films at queer and horror festivals this year, and a clear favourite amongst filmmakers themselves, Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes’ Sissy is one of a number of works at the Fantasia International Film Festival which address the process of recovering from trauma, but none of the others does so with anything like as much gusto. A reversed perspective take on the slasher movies of the Eighties and Nineties, with a similarly vibrant colour palette, it gets to the nub of who cinematic villains so often start out as victims, and why many viewers root for them, while retaining full awareness of the horror of its title character’s actions.
‘Sissy’ is, in fact, the name she (Aisha Dee) was known by at school – both a shortened form of her real name and a taunt. These days she prefers to be known as Cecilia. She works.

The Goran Stolevski-directed horror-drama “You Won’t Be Alone,” was Thursday named the best film at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, Korea’s leading genre film event.
The Australia-u.K.-Serbia co-production is set in Macedonia and stars Noomi Rapace in a 19th century tale about a young girl who is transformed into a witch. It premiered at the Sundance festival in January and recently played in Sydney. At the Palm Springs festival, Stolevski won the ‘directors to watch’ prize.
His next feature, “Of An Age,” about a whirlwind gay romance, is already completed and is set as the opening film of next month’s Melbourne Film Festival.
The BiFan jury heaped praise on “You Won’t Be Alone.” “It is a phenomenal attempt to interpret the fundamentals of humanity through the means of genre cinema by using alienated and isolated human creatures borrowed from folk tales, added up with mystery.

Hello, dear readers! The 2022 SXSW Film Festival featured an impressive number of genre goodies on this year’s programming slate, which kept this writer rather busy over the last few weeks. Here are my thoughts on a pair of super fun indie horror projects that fans should definitely keep on their radars for later this year: Kane Senes and Hannah Barlow’s Sissy and Deadstream from the husband-wife team of Joseph and Vanessa Winter.
Sissy: In Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes’ Sissy, we’re introduced to social media influencer and self-appointed self-help guru Cecilia (Aisha Dee), who has never quite shaken the memories of losing her childhood best friend Emma some decades ago. But fate steps in one day when Cecilia bumps into Emma (played by Barlow) at a pharmacy, and her former bestie invites Cecilia to come out and celebrate her impending nuptials to her fiancée, Fran (Lucy Barrett), that night.

Earlier this month, Australian filmmakers Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes celebrated the world premiere of their pitch-black horror comedy Sissy at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival. Co-written by both Senes and Barlow, the film’s story is centered around two estranged childhood best friends named Cecilia (Aisha Dee) and Emma (Barlow) who cross paths as adults, and their attempt to reconnect during Emma’s bachelorette weekend goes awry when Cecilia finds herself on the outs with Emma’s fiancée, Fran (Lucy Barrett), and the rest of her friends, culminating in a hellish experience for everyone.
While in Austin, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with the filmmakers and several members of the cast of Sissy about their experiences collaborating on the project, and during our conversation, we chatted about the inspirations behind the story, how and why Aisha Dee was the perfect person to take on the role of Cecilia,...

Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes' appropriately scorched-earth "Sissy" is more than a cautionary tale. As modern societal trends become horror's next flavor of the week, writer/director duo Barlow and Senes embrace influencer culture for all its toxic positivity. It's akin to "Superhost" or "Spree," where sociopaths chase audiences because they cannot connect in real life. Online communities promote safe spaces where outcasts can escape, but "Sissy" opts for graphic exploitation delirium to layer its warnings of healthy screen usage heavy-handedly. The film will be too fantastically overwhelming for some as realism strips away, but for those who love their videos nasty, it's an energetic breakdown with the widest...

What is more real? The person you present to the outside world, or the person you hide and keep bottled up. Philosophically, it's tricky. They are both you, and they are both real. The latter might be the easy answer because it relies solely on the individual for confirmation, the the latter can is the face you present to the world and if that is everyone else's experience of a person, is that not also real, maybe even more real? Australian horror comedy Sissy asks the question, and the answer is just as messy as you might think in this glitter-bombed cabin-in-the-outback slasher from directors Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes. Cecelia (Aisha Dee) is an Instagram wellness influencer who goes by @SincerlyCecelia. She preaches balance,...

"What are you, rebranding?" An early festival trailer has debuted for an indie horror film called Sissy, which is premiering at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival kicking off in March. It's screening in the Midnighters section at the festival, as another brutal social media horror thriller for the digital age. Invited away on a bachelorette weekend, "Sissy" ends up stuck in a cabin with her old high school bully. Cecilia is a successful social media influencer living the dream of an independent, modern millennial woman... until she runs into Emma for the first time in over a decade. This looks like it gets super crazy out in the woods! Starring Aisha Dee as Cecilia / Sissy, with Hannah Barlow, Emily De Margheriti, Daniel Monks, Yerin Ha, Lucy Barrett, Shaun Martindale, Amelia Lule, April Blasdall, and Camille Cumpston. This looks like a kick ass follow-up to Ingrid Goes West, with hints at some frightening twists and turns.

In Sissy, Dee plays Cecilia (aka Sissy), teen Bff of Emma. The two were going to grow old together and never let anything come between them, until Alex, her bully and tormentor, ruined all of that. Twelve years later, Cecilia is a successful social media influencer living the dream – until she runs into Emma for the first time in over a decade.
