A24 has a reputation as one of the coolest indie movie “brands” today.
Through dozens of films, they have established themselves as arbiters of extremely good taste, maintaining relationships with their favorite filmmakers while taking big swings on new talent. They have also shown themselves to be crack marketers of their own product (how many boutique film studios inspire young fans to sweat sweatshirts emblazoned with their logo?)
This brand awareness is quite powerful. Younger filmgoers know an A24 movie when they see them; and they go see movies because the studio is behind them. This knowingness, a contract between the studio and the audience, extends to A24’s horror output, which is even more easily identifiable. “It’s an A24 horror movie,” you’ll say. And whoever you’re talking to will know exactly what you mean. Maybe it’s a little folksy, maybe it’s a little techy,...

A24 is having a moment right now. For starters, the indie studio and 21st century tastemaker is actually able to produce movies during the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes due to its separation from the major Hollywood studios. So bring on that movie where Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega are responsible for killing a unicorn! More impressive though, A24 just picked up its second Best Picture Oscar in six years, and for a movie that walked away with a staggering seven Oscar wins overall in March.
Not bad for a company that’s barely a decade old, and which is still generally regarded in the zeitgeist for putting out strange, and yet often entrancing work. That, indeed, could be used to describe most of their horror output, which has had a bigger hand in shaping the genre in the 2010s than any other studio or production company not named Blumhouse. Chicago rock outfit Whitney unveiled a charming new song, “Used to Be Lonely,” that will appear on their new album, Forever Turned Around, out August 30th on Secretly Canadian.
The track evolves from a sweet, falsetto-steeped singalong into a hypnotic horn-fueled groove. Whitney also unveiled a video for “Used to Be Lonely,” which was directed by Austin Vesely and filmed at some of the bands favorite Chicago spots, including the Music Box Theatre and the Lake Michigan shoreline.
“Used to Be Lonely” follows previously-released Forever Turned Around tracks “Valleys (My Love)” and “Giving Up.

Chance the Rapper is adding to his already lengthy list of side projects by developing a new movie musical called Hope for MGM. The story is close to Chance’s heart as, according to the studio, it follows a group of teenagers who turn “art into [community] action.” Since Chance’s rise to prominence, he’s also turned his attention from music to politics and activism. Most recently, he teased a bid for the Chicago Mayor’s office before ultimately endorsing Amara Enyia. ““Very narcissistically,” he said, “if I back you,...

Austin Vesely has some serious balls. In his feature film directorial debut, “Slice,” the young writer-director casts one of the biggest musical artists in the world, Chance Bennett, aka Chance the Rapper, joined by one of Hollywood’s brightest rising stars, and a handful of veteran comedians. The filmmaker then crafted a “Thriller“-esque story —yes, that Michael Jackson music video — that features heavy amounts of special effects work, including practical makeup and CGI, and climaxes with a witch fighting a ghost, who is saved by a werewolf, as they battle over the gate to Hell.

There isn’t a town quite like Kingfisher, nor is there a movie quite like Austin Vesely’s “Slice.” With his feature-length directorial debut, the longtime Chance the Rapper’s collaborator has concocted a world where ghosts co-exist alongside humans and a werewolf is on the loose, yet Kingfisher still feels like a real town, thanks in part to wonderful turns from Zazie Beetz, Paul Scheer, and Rae Gray. Although it falters at time, “Slice” is a funny and campy homage to ’80s horror, mashing together Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” with “Stranger Things” and “Riverdale,” often with satisfying results.
Since 2012, Vesely has collaborated with Chance the Rapper on several music videos, including “Juice,” “Everybody’s Something,” and “Angels,” which features Chance standing on top of a Chicago subway car. With “Slice,” they’ve created a black comedy with horror elements that seems destined to become a stoner classic. With memorable characters,...

“Slice,” the feature film debut for Chance the Rapper and his childhood friend, writer-director Austin Vesely, had its premiere and sole theatrical screenings on Monday night, just before distributor A24 surprise-dropped it on iTunes, digital and on-demand like it’s a new Beyoncé album.
“It was a drunken scribble in a notebook that I turned into a script for a short film,” writer/director Vesely joked during a Q&A after its Chicago screening, which was simulcast to the screenings in 20 other cities.
That quip was appropriate for the very laissez-faire occasion, at least from the ground in Los Angeles, where the scene at the Regal Cinema L.A. Live in downtown was the opposite of a big premiere to-do. Almost no signage to even signify the movie was showing could be seen, and attendees weren’t even sure what they were in for.

Chance the Rapper will make his feature film debut in A24’s “Slice,” and the distributor is taking a page out of Queen Bey’s book, dropping the film online without much warning.
The distributor will bypass the traditional release methods and instead drop the film on iTunes, digital and on-demand at midnight on Sep. 11.
But the film will still play in theaters — A24 hosted a premiere for “Slice” in Chance’s hometown of Chicago, along with simulcast screenings in 20 additional cities across the country. Alas, as of right now, that’s all the big screen time the movie will see. A24 has no plans to release “Slice” in additional theaters.

As said in its new trailer, Slice is a movie about a ghost, a werewolf, and a “pretty sh*tty pizza place” — and it’s also Chance the Rapper’s feature acting debut!

Zazie Beetz embarks on a wolf hunt in this first trailer for the fun-looking supernatural thriller Slice. The movie also involves the murder of some pizza delivery boys, a ghost, and a pizza place that serves as the gateway to hell! The first trailer for A24’s horror flick “Slice” has been delivered.

In a spooky small town, when a slew of pizza delivery boys are slain on the job, two daring survivors (Beetz and Chance) set out to catch the culprits behind the cryptic crime spree. Looks like they may hit a bump or two along the way, as they find out the pizza delivery place is (spoiler alert!) built on a gateway to hell. Yeah, the joint’s owner, Paul Scheer, can’t believe it either — though apparently he’s been told before.

"It all started when the werewolf came back to town..." A24 has delivered a new full-length red bad trailer for their funky new horror film Slice, directed by Austin Vesely, and starring Chance The Rapper (aka Chance Bennett) as a pizza delivery guy who gets into some serious shit. As they reveal in this trailer, the more specific plot involves murders: "When a pizza delivery driver is murdered on the job, the city searches for someone to blame: ghosts? drug dealers? a disgraced werewolf?" The cast includes Zazie Beetz, Rae Gray, Katherine Cunningham, Marilyn Dodds Frank, Will Brill, Y'lan Noel, Hannibal Buress, and Paul Scheer. This looks way more bloody and violent and crazy and cool and wicked fun than I was expecting, which is good because it has been such a long wait to finally see more. We've been posting teasers since last year! But this trailer seems to...

‘Slice’ Official Trailer: Chance the Rapper and A24 Deliver a Different Kind of Bloody Slasher Movie
A24 is pulling back the curtain on its mysterious new horror movie “Slice,” starring Chance the Rapper. The movie is directed by the musician’s longtime collaborator Austin Vesely, who has been behind the camera for Chance’s music videos “22 Offs,” “Brain Cells,” “Juice,” “Sunday Candy,” and “Angels.”
“Slice” takes place in a small town where a handful of pizza delivery boys have been murdered on the job. Two delivery boys who have survived team up on a mission to catch the murderer behind the mysterious crime spree. Chance stars opposite Will Brill, Zazie Beets, Joe Keery, Y’lan Noel, and Paul Scheer.
Vesely kicked off the Chicago-set production on “Slice’ in secret in 2016. The movie has had a long road to release, with the project first announced in October 2016 and an animated teaser that dropped a year later on Halloween 2017.

After getting the first tease way back in 2016, the promised 2017 release for Austin Vesely’s horror feature Slice didn’t materialize, but now it looks like A24 is finally ready to unleash the film–starring Chance Bennett aka Chance the Rapper–into the world. Also starring Atlanta‘s Zazie Beetz, the first trailer has now arrived for the Chicago-shot feature, which follows our leads getting the bottom of a mystery involving werewolves, pizza, a gateway into hell, and more.
“He is actually a werewolf who is a former Chinese food delivery driver,” writer-director Austin Vesely told Red Eye, explaining Chance the Rapper’s character, named Dax Lycander. “Basically, these murders start happening and they hearken back to an incident that happened with him years before, and they arouse the town’s suspicions.”
Also starring Paul Scheer, Rae Gray, and Joe Keery, see the trailer and poster below.

In 2016, Chance the Rapper secretly filmed a slasher film about an outlaw framed for the murders of several pizza boys, appropriately titled Slice. Last Halloween, the Mc teased the project on Twitter, and now, one year later, a second clip has arrived promising the film will be released in 2018.

"Ready to get sliced?" Wha?! This teaser trailer is awesome! A24 has quietly revealed a new teaser trailer for the horror Slice, an indie comedy about a killer taking out pizza deliver guys. This teaser is based on the popular internet game "Line Rider" (play it here) and features a pizza delivery dude on a motorbike riding down through lines and pizza slice triangles. Eventually some footage appears in the pizza slices, but not much. A24 was going to release the film this year, but pushed it back until sometime in 2018. Slice stars mixtape master Chance The Rapper (aka Chance Bennett) and was filmed "quietly" in Chicago. The rest of the cast includes Zazie Beetz & Paul Scheer. I'm still excited to see this. Seems like it might be a goofy, fun comedy about pizza delivery drivers trying to stay alive in the midst of these killings. Enjoy this teaser. Here's...

After highlighting 50 films that we can guarantee are worth seeing this year, it’s time we venture into the unknown. Rather than regurgitating a list of dated-years-in-advance studio releases, we’ve set out to focus on 100 films we’re genuinely looking forward to, regardless of their marketing budgets. While some might not have a set release — let alone any confirmed festival premiere — most have wrapped production and will likely debut at some point in 2017, so make sure to check back for updates over the next twelve months and beyond. Be sure to keep the following one-hundred films on your radar (with release dates, where applicable). If you want to see how we did with our picks last year (potentially to shame us), head on over here.

Pizza delivery for Chance The Rapper! A24 has announced that they'll be releasing a movie in the second half of 2017 titled Slice, an indie comedy about a killer taking out pizza deliver guys. The film stars mixtape master Chance The Rapper (aka Chance Bennett) and was already filmed "quietly" in Chicago over the summer, though it won't be out until next year. The IMDb listing doesn't even mention Chance, even though he's named on the stylish teaser poster seen below. According to IMDb, the rest of the cast includes Will Brill and Rae Gray. This sounds like it's going to be very fun, a comedy about pizza delivery drivers trying to stay alive and figure out who wants to get rid of all of them. The teaser is short, but at least it's something. Here's the first teaser footage (+ a poster) for Austin Vesely's Slice, direct from A24's Twitter: Slice.
