A super Pac with ties to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is lavishing money on some embarrassingly bad ads supporting President Joe Biden’s long-shot challenger, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.). According to disclosures, We Deserve Better, launched last year, has spent $665,000 so far boosting Phillips, including $154,000 on TV ads.
Phillips, a late entry into the presidential race, is pouring his energy into New Hampshire, operating on the theory that a triumph in the first-in-the nation primary, where Biden will not appear on the ballot, could catapult his candidacy to national relevance.

Dean Phillips — liquor heir, gelato prince, step-grandson of the advice columnist Dear Abby, and Democratic congressman from Minnesota — is challenging Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination for president. Phillips filed his paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday night.
Phillips will officially announce in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Friday, which is the deadline to appear on the primary ballot in the state. To call his candidacy a longshot is an understatement, but Phillips has a good shot of winning the Democratic primary in New Hampshire — because Biden will not appear on the ballot.

Week 25 of Deadline’s Strike Talk podcast comes amid a tough time on the negotiations front between SAG-AFTRA and the studios. No formal talks have taken place or have even been scheduled since October 11, when bargaining was suspended amid the latest impasse.
The stalemate led to a group of A-list actors including George Clooney, Emma Stone, Ben Affleck, Tyler Perry and Scarlett Johansson offering to break the stalemate with a plan that would see Hollywood’s biggest earners defraying the costs to AMPTP signatories by eliminating the cap on membership dues, to be used to bolster health benefits and other areas that SAG-AFTRA is trying to shore up. The union has since said the offer was appreciated but not feasible.
Amid all this, Strike Talk host Billy Ray is joined this week by Steve Schmidt, founder of The Warning newsletter, YouTube channel and podcast, and a political commentator and strategist.

It’s a weird time to watch politics on television, and I’m not just talking about political discussions that take place nightly on CNN or Fox News. If you watch stuff like “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” or “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver,” they’d tell you since Trump left office there’s been little respite. Our Covid deaths remain high, women’s reproductive rights are being demolished, and police brutality still happens, nothing’s changed. But to watch political limited series or documentaries, there’s a feeling some type of wall has been breached. Like “Gutsy,” “The Lincoln Project” feels too simplistic in its presentation of the nuances that ended up destroying the group internally. Add in the fact that our world already feels worse than it did in 2020 and it feels instantly dated.

It’s been said that former President Donald Trump corrupts all who enter his orbit — that it’s impossible to deal directly with him without taking on his amorality and crassness.
“The Lincoln Project,” a new documentary series on Showtime, depicts that process among his political opposition. Here, people devoted to ousting Trump mirror his rhetorical style and his self-regard. And it’s in subtly making this case that the documentary succeeds, even as it grows punishing to watch.
The Lincoln Project, a circle of former high-level Republican strategists who made viral anti-Trump ads, seemed throughout the 2020 presidential election to be, Trumpishly, more focused on brand promotion than political work. “No one’s ever fucked with a candidate like we’ve fucked with a candidate,” Lincoln Project co-founder Rick Wilson says early in the doc; those schemes include a Times Square billboard, attention-getting for attention’s sake.

As Valentines Day approaches, “There’s nothing to get you revved up for romance like a solid week of bloody insurrection videos,” said Bill Maher Friday, as the former president’s impeachment trial may wrap tomorrow. But, pre-Senate vote, he tamped down hopeful Dems and anti-Trump conservatives crossing their fingers for a conviction after so much distressing footage of the Capitol assault shown during the trial, reminding them that Republicans “don’t do epiphany.” A conviction is considered extremely unlikely, requiring 17 Republicans to vote with 50 Democrats. “They never come around,” Maher said. “This is the problem with Democrats. Always hoping. It’s the Charlie Brown with the football thing.” His special guest Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-il) may be an exception.

In the waning hours of the 2020 presidential election, the Lincoln Project has enlisted Harrison Ford to narrate a new ad that plays up President Donald Trump’s suggestion that he will fire Dr. Anthony Fauci.
The spot features a scene from a Trump rally on Sunday in which supporters began chanting “Fire Fauci! Fire Fauci!” and the president responded, “Don’t tell anybody, but let me wait til a little bit after the election.”
Ford then says, “Tomorrow, you can fire only one of them. The choice is yours.”

A Supreme Court seat has opened in an election year, and you’ll never guess who is strongly in favor of filling it — all of the people who were against it last time. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his Republican colleagues would like to fill the vacancy created by Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death, despite the fact that they spent the better part of 2016 vehemently opposing the idea of having a Supreme Court fight so close to ballot-casting time. Donald Trump began the first day of the 2020 Republican Convention ranting against CNN, MSNBC and even his beloved Fox News. The ludicrously described “bodyguard of Western civilization” ended the first day of the 2020 Republican Convention on a tweetstorm.
Coming off the Democrats’ cohesive coronation of Joe Biden last week, it was a tale of two conventions and the GOP seemed to lose the plot almost from the start.
Partially a Fantasy Island of sorts from what is really going on in an America kneecapped by Covid-19, near sky high unemployment and partisan blood sports, Monday was a spin cycle that aspired to maximum overdrive but sputtered throughout with falsehoods. It was also a repetitive knee jerk response to the Democrats’ pretty successful virtual shindig last week that was either bashing former Vice-President Biden or stopping just short of hailing the appearance of four horsemen on the cultural horizon.

Joe Biden’s presidential campaign got a big boost in the latest quarter that brought it into closer parity with Donald Trump’s fundraising juggernaut, as the former vice president saw major contributions from a number of industry moguls and media titans.
Jeffrey Katzenberg, who hosted an event for Biden last month, gave $617,800 to the Biden Victory Fund, the joint fund-raising committee set up for the campaign, the Democratic National Committee and state parties. Also giving was Steven Spielberg, who chipped in $250,000, along with his wife, Kate Capshaw, who gave the same amount.
James Murdoch, the son of Rupert Murdoch, and his wife Kathryn each donated $615,000 to the victory fund.
Other contributors included Bob Iger, the executive chairman of The Walt Disney Co., who gave $250,000. Abigail Disney, the granddaughter of Roy E. Disney who is a documentary filmmaker and social activist, gave $50,000 to the Biden fund.

Over the course of his presidency, President Donald Trump has hurled invective at any number of TV journalists, whether it be Don Lemon, Arthel Neville, Neil Cavuto, Nicolle Wallace, Brian Williams, Chris Cuomo, Leland Vittert, Peter Alexander, Yamiche Alcindor, Weija Jiang, Jon Karl or Paula Reid. But he seems to launch his worst material at Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski.
Trump’s continued efforts to stir up debunked conspiracy theories about a former staffer in Scarborough’s Florida congressional office represent just his latest attempt to smear the news hosts. In 2018, some people may recall – it’s hard to do given the sheer volume of White House name-calling – Trump prompted shock when he made remarks about Brzezinski’s appearance. “Crazy Mika” and “Psycho Joe” are phrases he has tried to make common, even though the hosts have with Willie Geist maintained one of the longest-running anchor teams on a national morning-news program?...

Trump Strengthens Bond With Abraham Lincoln by Melting Down Over Commercial Attacking His Leadership
President Trump is a big fan of Abraham Lincoln, the one president he believes to be his equal. Throughout his time in office, Trump has made several bizarre attempts to compare himself to “Honest Abe,” the most recent on Sunday during a Fox News town hall event in front of the Lincoln Memorial. “I am greeted with a hostile press the likes of which no president has ever seen,” Trump groused.

The Democratic presidential debate on Wednesday was free of some of the fireworks of previous events, but one candidate stood out for her sparring with her rivals: Tulsi Gabbard.
The Hawaii Democrat was a target of one of Kamala Harris’s attacks. “It is unfortunate that we have someone on this stage who is attempting to be the Democratic nominee for president of the United States, who during the Obama administration spent four years full-time on Fox News criticizing President Obama,” Harris said, adding that Gabbard “buddied up with Steve Bannon to get a meeting with Donald Trump.”
Gabbard responded, “What Senator Harris is doing is unfortunately continuing to traffic in lies and smears and innuendos because she cannot challenge the substance of the argument that I’m making.”
She said Harris would “continue the status quo, continue the Bush-Clinton-Trump foreign policy of regime change wars.” She has made a...

As you may have heard, there’s an election today. Its importance is impossible to overstate no matter which side of the political aisle you’re on, and Bill Hader thinks you’d be “a moron” not to vote. Our imperfect electoral system has inspired many great movies over the years, a few of which celebrate it but most of which either lampoon it or show how vulnerable it is. After you, being the responsible citizen you clearly are, fulfill your civic duty by voting in the midterm election today, take a break from anxiously watching the results by watching one of these 10 films instead.

Even after Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in as the newest Supreme Court justice, political pundits continue to evaluate the fall-out from a confirmation process that underscored the nation’s deep divisions.
MSNBC political analyst Steve Schmidt said Kavanaugh should have withdrawn his nomination to preserve the integrity of the U.S. Supreme Court. For the duration of tenure on the nation’s high court, he warned, half of the country will view the appointment as illegitimate — eroding confidence in the institution.
“We live in a time where there’s a complete collapse of trust in public institutions in this country,” Schmidt said. “This is a lifetime appointment. The only way to demonstrate his worthiness for this is to withdraw.”

Veteran political strategist and commentator Steven Schmidt has boarded Showtime’s weekly political docuseries The Circus as a recurring on-air contributor. He’ll join hosts John Heilemann, Alex Wagner and Mark McKinnon when the show returns this Sunday, September 16.
Schmidt is no newcomer to The Circus, having made several previous appearances offering insight on his more than two decades working at the highest levels of national Republican politics. Schmidt played key roles on the campaign teams of Arizona Senator John McCain, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and President George W. Bush, whom he also served in the White House. Schmidt is currently a political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC and co-host of the podcast Words Matter.

Washington — Tom Steyer, the progressive billionaire leading a campaign to impeach President Trump, said candidates running for office this fall need to address “what we are going to do about a lawless, reckless, and dangerous president.”
He tells Variety‘s “PopPolitics” on SiriusXM that if the candidates “are not for impeachment,” they should explain “what is their solution to the lawlessness and recklessness of this president?”
“The question should be, and I would pose it, what are we waiting for? How much information do you need? If the level of corruption isn’t too much for you, how many laws does he have to break before you decide he has to go?”
The “i” word has been a topic that a number of Democrats fear will backfire on the party as it faces the midterms, and instead want to focus on what House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi calls a “culture of corruption.

Election Day is finally here!
We’ve been bombarded with political ad after political ad (to the point that some of us burst into tears at the mention of President Barack Obama or Gov. Mitt Romney), but one of the most divisive presidential elections in U.S. history is almost over.
After you cast your ballot, you will most likely turn on the TV to watch the returns this evening. With more channels than ever, you will have to make one more choice before the clock strikes midnight: Which election coverage to watch.
Just as you should be informed about your presidential nominees, you should be informed about your election night coverage options. Check out the candidates below:
Broadcast Networks
• NBC: The Peacock network’s election special begins at 7:00 p.m. Est/4 p.m. Pst and lasts until 3 a.m. Est./12 a.m.

The Showtime series pulled off a major upset at the 64th Annual Emmy Awards last night, winning a large chunk of the major awards in the Drama category over favourites like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. Claire Danes and Damian Lewis both took home awards for Lead Actress and Actor in a Drama Series, while the show also broke Mad Men's four-year win streak for Outstanding Drama Series. Elsewhere, Aaron Paul won his second Emmy for his supporting performance as Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus won Best Lead Actress in a Comedy for Veep. Modern Family still took the Outstanding Comedy Series, however, while the HBO movie Game Change took the Outstanding Mini-Series or TV Movie. Kevin Costner did manage to pick up some...
