“The Man From Hope,” the 17-minute film that presented Bill Clinton to the Democratic National Convention, was big news in 1992. Produced by Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and Harry Thomason, the couple behind the hit TV series “Designing Women,” the short became the subject of innumerable long articles in major publications.
This year, the filmmakers behind the highest-grossing movies of all time also directed videos featured at the DNC. J.J. Abrams assembled the two-minute preamble to Michelle Obama’s speech, James Cameron contributed a 5-minute piece on the urgency of fighting climate change. Both left the media unrippled: Frankly, there was just too much competition.
Broadway luminaries filled the Wells Fargo Center’s stage for a rendition of “What the World Needs Now,” addressed to victims of gun violence, and the grace with which more than three dozen singers shared two microphones felt like socialism in action. Dozens more turned up in “Our Fight Song,...

Funny or Die is producing video shorts for the Democratic National Convention this week, and the first one aired tonight. “Decoding Donald: Outsourcing” starred Ken Jeong and Austan Goolsbee, President Obama’s first Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, talking about some of the Gop nominee’s controversial business practices. The clip focuses on the fact Donald Trump’s branded clothing lines — and vodka and crystal bar ware, etc. — are produced outside the…...

The economy added just 88,000 non-farm payroll jobs in the month of March, forcing the labor participation rate down and driving the unemployment rate down to 7.6 percent. Reacting to this news, former White House advisor Austan Goolsbee told the hosts of CNBC that the news was a “punch to the gut.” He attempted to blame the cuts on the sequester before another CNBC host corrected him and noted that the payroll tax hike was more likely the reason for the show employment growth.

Sean Hannity tonight mocked the upcoming automatic sequestration as President Obama's "Mayan apocalypse" and took on Obama's apparent demonization of his Republican rivals. During a heated discussion with Austan Goolsbee and Tucker Carlson, Hannity said that if Obama is going to keep name-calling and lobbing attacks at conservatives, he might as well refer to the president as a "thief."...

Tonight, Discovery seems to be airing a non-Shark Week themed show since "One Man Army" is airing at its usual time. I've checked the episode description and nowhere does it mention Anything about sharks so that's frustrating and confusing. They've managed to make episodes of "Mythbusters" and "Dirty Jobs" that were Shark Week themed so I don't know why they can't just do that for all shows that air during Shark Week. And since the same company owns TLC and Discovery channel maybe they could send a few sharks over to "Toddlers and Tiaras" to get these parents to have a little perspective. "What's that? Your little girl doesn't like it when you bleach her hair because it burns? That's a shame. We've got someone to help you deal with those feelings. Actually, several someones. Or somethings. We call the big one Bitey." Here's your Wednesday night TV:

Greetings, Zoners!
I’m still feeling so joyful over our favorite Pac-man’s birthday antics. I think it’s the most brilliant combination of comic shenanigans and political exploits that I’ve ever witnessed; agitprop in action. When I think of what Stephen’s accomplished this year–the rally, the congressional testimony, this scintillating new adventure–I’m simply blown away. He’s audacious, fearless, and the most unique satirist of our time. Stephen, I send you profound thanks for sacrificing your special day for the greater good of society and comedy. May you enjoy many years of celebrating, many years of performing, and many years of happiness with your family. Know that you are very loved and admired by a nation’s worth of people.
And now to next week’s guests…

"Win the Future," if you're not into the whole brevity thing. He registered it in '06. Then Obama stole it. Now Gingrich is taking it back. Winning!
Life-long presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich launched his latest candidacy with the slogan: "Win the Future." If that sounds familiar, you probably watched Obama's State of the Union address, where he debuted it to the world--or you saw the recent White House Correspondents Association dinner where Obama relegated it to joke status (start at 2:54 of Obama's own parody video).
[youtube 508aCh2eVOI]
What most folks don't realize--and the Atlantic deftly discovered today--is that Newt Gingrich, whose campaign only launched this week, actually registered "American Solutions for Winning the Future" with the IRS under section 527 of the tax code on October 6, 2006. The group has handled his political ops ever since.
The catchphrase failed to catch on with pushes from both politicians. And both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert...

Oh, Thursday, not actually the weekend but about that time in the week when you start getting the weekend feeling. That "What's one more drink?" feeling, the "Hey, it's 11pm which sounds like an awesome time to start a movie!" urge. Because it's all so close you can taste it and it tastes like the weekend and sleeping in even though you know in the back of your mind that you still have to go to work/school the next day. Or some of you do, if you don't I'd really rather not hear about it because I do. However, I do hope you have a fabulous last weekend in February when it makes it way to rolling around and that your Sunday night is entertaining whether or not you're watching the Oscars. I'm sure there's something special going on here but I couldn't for the life of me tell...

I've been writing about, and mocking, TV for a little over a year now and the tables may be turned tonight. I'm going to be a judge on the University of Miami's version of "American Idol" and I'm not exactly sure how it will go. I've never actually sat down and watched a full episode of "American Idol" so while I'm familiar with the concept, I don't know if I'll be able to live up to whatever expectations the audience will have. I've been led to believe that it will be available streaming next week after it's been edited and made to look less like something produced by college students. Let me know if you're interested in getting the link and I'll try to make that available next Monday. Here's all the television on tonight that doesn't feature me:
8:00pm: "90210" on The CW
"Chuck" on NBC

The biggest thing happening on TV today is the rescue of the Chilean miners who have been trapped underground since August 5th. It's been going on since late last night and will probably take hours more, since they seem to be getting out one miner per hour. As of the time I'm writing this, they've just gotten the 13th miner out so there's about 20 to go, plus the rescue workers they sent down to check on the remaining miners. The worst part of the whole thing so far, for me, is the American coverage. Last night one of the American reporters on the scene compared the situation to an American football game, and there have been multiple comparisons to the moon landing. Because nothing can be something awesome and inspiring on it's own, we have to find some sort of comparison because otherwise viewers won't understand the sheer magnitude of...
