Bryce Dallas Howard is set to direct and produce a reboot of “Flight of the Navigator” for Disney+, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.
The film will reimagine the story with a female lead. The 1986 original told the story of a 12-year-old boy who is abducted by a UFO and reappears eight years later at the same age, with no recollection of what happened. Randal Kleiser (“Grease”) directed, and it was written by Mark H. Baker, Michael Burton and Matt MacManus.
The film, although distributed by Disney, was produced and financed by now defunct company Producers Sales Organization. Disney tried to remake the film in 2009 with Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly attached to pen the script, but Disney lost the rights to Lionsgate in the 2010s. However, the studio couldn’t get the project off the ground, so it reverted back to Disney.
John Swartz and Justin Springer are also producing.

Paul Reubens provided the voice of Max in the film which was released in late July 1986 grossing an uninflated $18.6M at the domestic B.O. Randal Kleiser, who had directed Paramount’s big hit Grease, and The Blue Lagoon, directed the original Flight of the Navigator off a screenplay by Michael Burton and Phil Joanou.
John Swartz, Howard’s partner at her production company Nine Muses, and Justin Springer are also producing.

‘Tron: Legacy.’
Garth Davis is attached to direct a reboot of Disney’s Tron franchise, starring Suicide Squad’s Jared Leto.
The Top of the Lake, Lion and Mary Magdalene director aggressively pursued the job, eventually winning over execs at the studio, according to Deadline.
Although the project is still in development, Deadline said Davis’ involvement is a push in the right direction for the future of the franchise.
Meanwhile Davis and his head of development Samantha Lang are continuing to develop feature film and TV projects for I Am That, a production co-venture with Iain Canning and Emile Sherman’s See-Saw Films.
“We are delighted about this new role for Garth and will continue to work closely with him,” Lang tells If.
The franchise kicked off in 1982 with Tron, a sci-fi action-adventure set in the fantastic world inside a computer program, starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner and directed by Steven Lisberger.

Tron 3 is about to emerge from its imprisonment in the proverbial Grid of Disney’s backlog, as evidenced by the Mouse House’s appointment of a director.
Garth Davis is now set to direct the long-gestating untitled third film in the Tron franchise, reports Deadline. Davis, an emerging talent known for indie dramas, most recently directed the 2018 Rooney Mara-starring Biblical epic, Mary Magdalene, and the Oscar-nominated 2016 Dev Patel-starring biographical piece, Lion, along with television runs with Top of the Lake and Love My Way. While the status of the script is not quite clear as of yet, the most recent draft of the Tron 3 script was written by Jesse Wigutow.

Disney is in early development on a remake of its 1973 animated musical comedy “Robin Hood” for Disney Plus.
“Blindspotting” director Carlos Lopez Estrada is on board to helm the movie. Kari Granlund, who wrote the script for 2019’s Disney Plus reboot of “Lady and the Tramp,” is attached to pen the new “Robin Hood.” Justin Springer, whose Disney credits include “Dumbo” and “Tron: Legacy,” is producing the pic.
The new version is being developed with the animals in a CGI/live-action hybrid format, similar to Disney remakes of “The Jungle Book” and “Dumbo.” The deals for Estrada and Granlund were signed early last month prior to the coronavirus pandemic.
The 1973 “Robin Hood” — produced and directed by Wolfgang Reitherman — was centered on the classic story of Robin Hood, Little John, Friar Tuck, Maid Marian and the Sheriff of Nottingham. Hood, portrayed as a fox, led the fight against Prince John’s excessive taxation.

Disney+ Acquires Neal Shusterman Novel ‘Challenger Deep’ With ‘Toy Story 4’s Will McCormack Adapting
Exclusive: Disney + has acquired the National Book Award-winning Neal Shusterman novel Challenger Deep. The streaming division of Disney has set Toy Story 4 scribe Will McCormack to write the script.
The book gracefully covers mental illness. Caden Bosch lives in two worlds; one is a life with family, friends and high school. It’s all good, but he’s paranoid for no reason, thinks people are trying to kill him, and demonstrates obsessive compulsive behaviors. In his other world, he’s part of the crew for a pirate captain on a voyage to the Challenger Deep, the ocean’s deepest trench. There is a captain and his mutinous parrot, and mutterings of his fellow shipmates as they sail uncharted waters toward unknown dangers, with Caden unable to understand. The author based the book on his own son’s schizoaffective disorder.

Tim Burton’s “Dumbo” is flying toward a $48 million opening weekend in North America, while the second session of Jordan Peele’s “Us” should take in about $32 million, early estimates showed on Friday.
“Dumbo’s” launch is slightly lower than recent Disney forecasts for the live-action re-imagining of the 1941 animated movie. “Dumbo” earned $2.6 million on Thursday night and is expanding to 4,259 North American venues.
The movie stars Danny DeVito as the owner of a struggling circus who enlists Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell), and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock. The children’s love for the sad-eyed pachyderm helps him fly. Michael Keaton stars as a shady entrepreneur, with Alan Arkin as a Wall Street tycoon and Eva Green as an aerial artist.
“Dumbo” is produced by Justin Springer, Ehren Kruger, Katterli Frauenfelder, and Derek Frey.

Tim Burton’s “Dumbo” has taken flight with an estimated $2.6 million in North America on Thursday night.
It’s a similar figure to the $3 million earned by “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” during Thursday previews and the $2.1 million gross for “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.”
Disney expects the live-action re-imagining of its 1941 animated movie to make around $50 million this weekend when it launches in 4,259 North American venues. Should that estimate hold, “Dumbo” will probably nab the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office over the second weekend of Jordan Peele’s horror hit “Us.”
“Dumbo” is the latest Disney live-action remake of its animated library, highlighted by “Beauty and the Beast,” which opened with $174 million and went on to gross $1.2 billion worldwide. Circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) enlists former star Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. But when they discover that Dumbo can fly, the circus makes an incredible comeback, attracting persuasive entrepreneur V.A. “The unique thing about making a movie is making a sort of circus anyway,” Dumbo producer Justin Springer told us and a group of journalists on the set visit to the Disney live-action movie. I’m a huge fan of the Tron franchise and I was one of those people who actually really loved what Tron: Legacy delivered. It was such an awesome continuation of the original film and the fact that the sequel ended up getting made in the first place was kind of a miracle.
There was another sequel in development and right as everyone was back on board and the time came for Disney to give it the official greenlight, it ended up getting canceled instead. I was pretty bummed out by that. I previously talked to one of the producers of the film and he said that it was so close to being pushed through and he says it would’ve been an incredible sequel!
Well, there’s another producer that recently talked to /Film about Tron 3 and he’s still hoping that it will happen. That producer is Justin Springer,...

Danny DeVito, Eva Green, Colin Farrell and now Michael Keaton, Tim Burton certainly isn’t holding back the reins in trying to entice the big names to join his live-action Disney remake of the elephant that could fly, Dumbo.

Burton certainly has the pulling power but what could really swing Keaton his way is the fact the pair has previously worked together on the likes of Batman and Beetlejuice in the course of their careers, isn’t it high time these two paired up again? It has been 28 years since Batman…. damn, now we feel old. With the constant rumbling of the Beetlejuice sequel bubbling away, this could be the perfect avenue for the pair to finally team up before any final decisions are made.
