Ian Somerhalder has returned to television for another dance with the undead, but if you’re hoping for the second coming of Damon Salvatore, you might want to adjust your expectations. And then run for your life.
The vampires of Netflix’s V Wars — whose 10-episode first season dropped in full on Thursday — aren’t the smoldering sex symbols roaming the streets of Mystic Falls. “These vampires are different,” Somerhalder tells TVLine. “They’re not hundreds of years old, they’re weeks old, so there’s no historical aspect.” And while there are many different types of vampires on the show,...

The Silence – directed by John R. Leonetti – is the latest Netflix horror released with zero prior knowledge and fanfare for its consumers.
The film stars Stanley Tucci, Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Otto to name a few, as a family fighting a monstrous newly emerged enemy and to add insult to injury mysterious religious cult. If you’ve seen Bird Box or A Quiet Place you’ve already had the pleasure – or displeasure depending on your disposition – of seeing this underwhelming semi-horror protocol. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka impresses in a film that has little bite or intrigue, with very little emotional engagement or even horror elements for that matter.

With Pet Sematary (2019) headed to theaters today, that means we’re officially kicking off the Spring Movie Season, which makes it the perfect time to take a look ahead at all the horror, sci-fi, and genre-adjacent films headed to big and small screens in the coming months. And considering the Summer Movie Season seems to unofficially kick off earlier and earlier every year, this writer thought it only made sense to just go ahead and get a jump on the titles you should keep an eye out for in theaters or on VOD through August 2019.
Even though the movie gods have already been great to us horror fans over the last several months, we have so many exciting films to look forward to in the near future, including a new Hellboy, The Curse of La Llorona, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Brightburn, John Wick: Chapter 3, The Dead Don’t Die,...

There are a lot of amazing horror movies coming to Netflix in April, but the one we're most excited about is The Silence.
The streaming platform's latest original film is directed by Annabelle's John R. Leonetti and will have fans of A Quiet Place either loving or rolling their eyes at its plot: the world is under attack from bloodthirsty, flying creatures who hunt their human prey by sound, and 16-year-old Ally (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina's Kiernan Shipka), who lost her hearing at 13, has to seek shelter with a sinister cult to escape the monsters.
The movie is actually based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by writer Tim Lebbon, which came out in 2015. The adaptation will also star Stanley Tucci as Ally's father and Miranda Otto as her mother, while John Corbett, Kate Trotter, and Kyle Breitkopf make up the rest of the cast. Watch the...

If you enjoyed films like A Quiet Place and Bird Box, maybe this new Netflix thriller, The Silence, will be something you’ll want to watch because it’s a lot like those other two movies.
In this new thriller the world is being attacked and taken over by bats. The story centers on a family who is trying to survive and one of the best ways to prevent themselves from being killed is to be perfectly silent.
The film comes from Annabelle director John R. Leonetti, and it stars Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Stanley Tucci, Miranda Otto, John Corbett, Kate Trotter, and Kyle Breitkopf.
Here’s the synopsis for the film, which is based on a novel of the same name:

‘The Silence’ Trailer: Flying Monsters Are Hunting Kiernan Shipka and Stanley Tucci by Sound — Watch
“The Silence” is capitalizing on the latest trend for post-apocalyptic stories with creatures that prey on humans by curtailing basic functions. First there was “A Quiet Place,” in which John Krasinski and Emily Blunt had to evade blind extraterrestrial creatures with an acute sense of hearing. Then came the Netflix movie “Bird Box,” where Sandra Bullock had to blindfold herself so that she could avoid looking at creatures with the ability to drive a person to suicide.
Now, Netflix is combining all of these elements and throwing in some of its go-to stars for an extra synergistic push. In the movie, flying critters who kind of look like bats have destroyed the world by going after humans if they make any sound. That’s a familiar premise! The film also pulls from its Netflix stable of stars, including “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” actors Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Otto and “To...

Netflix movie The Silence showcases a family’s struggle to survive in a world overrun by carnivorous bats.
The Silence may be coming to the Netflix table with a horror premise that’s likely to evoke accusations of derivativeness, since it appears to be amalgam of two recent genre successes in A Quiet Place and Bird Box. However, the film has a bit of an alibi, since it’s based on the acclaimed 2015 novel of the same name by British horror novelist Tim Lebbon; meaning that, in the very least, its story pre-dates the zeitgeist explosion of those two films.
Regardless, The Silence showcases the ordeal of a family struggling to survive the onset of an apocalypse scenario in which the world is under attack by bat creatures; a survival scenario that – due to the sensitive, sonar-based hearing of bats – necessitates silence at all times, lest one...

"We can't trust anyone now." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a horror thriller titled The Silence, from filmmaker John R. Leonetti (Annabelle). Although the description for this sounds a lot like A Quiet Place, the novel it's based on was actually written years before that movie was made. The Silence tells the story of a family struggling to survive in a world terrorized by a deadly, primeval species of bat, hunting only with their acute hearing. As the family seeks refuge in a remote haven where they can wait out the invasion, they start to wonder what kind of world will remain when they're ready to emerge. Starring Stanley Tucci, Kiernan Shipka, Miranda Otto, John Corbett, Kate Trotter, and Kyle Breitkopf. This looks way more intense and horrifying than A Quiet Place, with a much scarier apocalyptic feel. Those darn crazy bats. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for John R.

Movies New to Netflix in April: ‘Burning,’ ‘American Honey,’ and Extended Version of ‘Hateful Eight’
Netflix might be skipping this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but the streaming giant is offering a bit of a mea culpa in its April offerings, which come with some exciting options from bonafide auteurs who also happen to be Cannes regulars, including Lee Chang-Dong, Andrea Arnold, and Quentin Tarantino. Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or winner “I, Daniel Blake” will also join Netflix’s ranks next month, along with classics like “All the President’s Men,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” and “Deliverance.”
In April, Netflix will add Lee’s lauded Cannes competitor “Burning,” which missed out on Oscar love but picked up plenty of other accolades during last year’s awards circuit, including a number of nods for star Steven Yeun. It will be joined by Arnold’s 2016 Palme d’Or entry “American Honey,” along with an extended version of Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight”.

V Wars, Netflix's television adaptation of Jonathan Maberry's vampire comic book series, stars Ian Somerhalder.
V Wars is set to immerse its starring actor, Ian Somerhalder, into a familiarly associated scenario, immersed amongst vampires, just as he’d previously done as an immortal for eight seasons of The CW's The Vampire Diaries, which ended in 2017. This time, however, he’ll be on the human side of the struggle.
Netflix set 10 episodes of the hour-long series, V Wars, an on-screen adaptation of Jonathan Maberry's 2012 book about the first Vampire War. The book is the first in a series that feature prose stories about the supernatural struggle. V-Wars: Chronicles of the Vampire Wars has four installments, and is distributed by Idw Publishing, who is also producing the series alongside High Park Entertainment.

One of the best bonuses to come out of the original streaming explosion is the launch of tons of new content for kids and family, and that includes a few throwback titles, like Amazon‘s Sigmund and the Sea Monsters.
The original show first aired when I was about two, and was part of a larger Sid & Marty Krofft world that became an integral part of ’70s culture. While there is much to be said for both incarnations of the wacky, family adventure, the best recommendation you can probably give for either is that the spirit of the Krofft effort is fueled by such a childlike imagination that you’re going to end up with something fun. For good or ill, the new effort feels like transporting yourself back in time, not just because the production isn’t exactly updated, but also because the mindset behind the creation isn’t different.

As fans of The Whispers know, the first season of the ABC summer series ended on a major cliffhanger. Several of the characters, including little Minx and Claire, were abducted without a trace.

When their mysterious games turn dangerous, FBI child specialist Claire Bennigan (Lily Rabe) is called in to investigate. The rest of the cast includes Barry Sloane, Milo Ventimiglia, Derek Webster, Kristen Connolly, Kylie Rogers, and Kyle Harrison Breitkopf.

ABC has renewed some of their summer TV series but The Whispers isn't one of them. The drama won't be returning for a second season. To no surprise, the network has cancelled The Whispers after one season of 13 episodes.

Under the Dome. Extant. Falling Skies. The Whispers. All of these shows have one thing in common: Steven Spielberg.
The acclaimed director/producer has always had a knack for science-fiction, but when it comes to the supernatural ventures he produces for the small-screen, the results have been, well, underwhelming, to put it nicely.

ABC‘s The Whispers feels more like something that should pop up on Syfy, and while that isn’t at all a bad thing in general, it also feels like the kind of show developed around the brainstorm-session telling of its opening ten minutes.
“Here’s a creepy scenario,” someone says, and the response is to tell him to just keep going.
As is becoming all too common, the story is written largely paying attention only to the tenets that – A) if it’s really goofy, but everyone is very serious, it’s really good – B) bullet points are all you need in our era of short attention spans.
Point A is basically the simple result of people wanting to get a lot of sci-fi on the air, even when they don’t understand why people like sci-fi. They don’t get why things work, or don’t, but they know Lost was popular.

Now that it is just barely summer, it’s time for the networks to try their best to get you excited for fall television. ABC wants you to get excited for their schedule, and their new shows, and I’ve got some previews for you, as well as some initial thoughts.
I have to tell you, ABC is looking more and more strange as time goes on, and the overall efforts of the network really have to make you wonder. While there are some hints of interesting shows, and one or two that might turn into worthwhile vehicles, in the Eddie and the Cruisers world of television, ABC is Joe Pantoliano, clutching his tapes, and furiously blathering about the lunacy of not giving the idiotic public what they want, especially since they keep demanding it.

After remaining quiet all spring, ABC monopolized the attentions of the nation's TV critics on Thursday (May 8) with an evening full of big announcements. You can read about seven of the network's renewals here, as ABC extended its relationship with "Scandal," "Grey's Anatomy," "Modern Family" and more. Fortunately, despite all of these renewals, ABC still has a number of bubble shows waiting for news on Friday, which means more content. And you can also read about ABC's renewal of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and pickup for "Marvel's Agent Carter" here. But like the game show host says... That's not all! In addition to "Marvel's Agent Carter," ABC gave series orders to dramas "How To Get Away With Murder," "American Crime," "The Whispers" and "Forever." On the comedy side, "Black-ish," "Manhattan Love Story" and "Selfie" earned series orders. And on the musical comedy fairy tale front?...

Parental Guidance is one of those efforts that lives in a similar world to the majority of romantic comedies. It exists because a certain demographic wants to catch a flick once in a while, and we put it together using the most straight-forward devices and simplest common denominators. Like those rom-coms, as the credits roll we often wonder how certain stars were enticed to lend their names to what we just watched. On the other hand, we have to admit that we usually find them all to be mostly harmless, especially if it’s a genre that has any appeal to us at all.
A kind of old vs. new battle, Parental Guidance follows the “hilarious” events that transpire when Artie Decker (Billy Crystal) and his wife, Diane (Bette Midler), agree to babysit their grandkids so that their daughter, Alice (Marisa Tomei), can have a week away with her husband.

Katherine McNamara ("Girl Vs. Monster") and Joel Courtney, the star of Super 8, are KidsPickFlicks.com's Movie Star Movie Critics -- and they rate Parental Guidance a Pick!
"When parents leave their children alone for the first time, they are full of worries about what the kids will do. In Parental Guidance, they were more worried about what trouble the grandparents would cause! Billy Crystal and Bette Midler make a charming and hilarious couple as "the other grandparents" desperately trying to win the trust and affections of their grandchildren played (quite well might I add) by Bailee Madison, Joshua Rush, and Kyle Harrison Breitkopf. Director Andy Fickman has filled this film with great holiday fun for the whole family - even a cameo by Tony Hawk! With laughs for all ages throughout and a message of the true meaning of family, we all could use a little Parental Guidance this season.
