Colleagues including Elizabeth Karlsen, Adrian Wootton, Hugo Heppell and Amma Asante pay tribute to the late BFI Film Fund executive
I first met Chris at the Dinard FIlm Festival. I’d just watched Sarah Gavron’s beautiful rendition of Brick Lane, which Chris had produced. After the screening he, Sarah and I sat at small table outdoors in the brilliant sunshine talking about films, the pressures of being an independent producer, our daughters and how much I loved Brick Lane. I hope he knew that I was speaking from the heart. I was struck then by his quiet intelligence, his gracious and kind nature and his absolute devotion to and passion for independent film making. I could see that Sarah had enjoyed tremendous commitment from him as a producer on her first film. I was lucky enough, with my partner Stephen Woolley, to work with him consistently over the next eight years. He was unfailingly...

It was a heavily-discussed film on S&A this year, and now the Noel Clarke-penned Fast Girls has been released on DVD & Blu-ray. Financed by BFI Film Fund, StudioCanal and Aegis, and developed by the UK Film Council, Fast Girls centers on a "street-smart" runner (Lenora Crichlow) who forms a rivalry with an equally ambitious wealthy athlete (Lily James). Fast Girls, directed by Regan Hall, also stars Noel Clarke, Bradley James, Lorraine Burroughs, Lashana Lynch and Hannah Frankson.

No doubt once again hoping to cash-in on the immense good will generated by the London Olympics — having previously preceded the games with its theatrical release back in June — Regan Hall’s Fast Girls this week lands on DVD and Blu-ray. But does it still stand up now that the endorphins have worn off and the Olympians have finally crossed the finishing line?
Promising young runner Shania Andrews (Lenora Crichlow) has offset her tumultuous home-life with the help of kindly shop-worker Brian (Philip Davis), who has trained her in anticipation of the 2011 World Athletics Championships. Leaving her mentor behind in order to work with professional trainer Tommy (Noel Clarke) and physiotherapist Carl (Bradley James), Shania progresses from local to national level alongside privileged rival Lisa Temple (Lily James), where the two are also asked to join the British 4×200 metres relay team.

Fast Girls
Stars: Lenora Crichlow, Lily James, Noel Clarke, Rupert Graves, Bradley James, Philip Davis, Lorraine Burroughs, Lashana Lynch, Hannah Frankson | Written by Jay Basu, Noel Clarke, Jon Croker, Roy Williams | Directed by Regan Hall
After a summer of sport The United Kingdom, especially London at times feels like it’s clinging onto the high that was achieved in those weeks. We’ve even had the government trying to use that uplifting feeling to sell what they see as their “brand”, where of course the people see it as their country. Enough of politics though or I’d be complaining for a few thousand words. The fact is the Olympics were a great success, and if you want to bring back some of that magic Fast Girls may be the perfect film for you.
Using the background of athletics Fast Girls look at the relationship between two girls, Shania and Lisa.

Prometheus; Rock of Ages; Fast Girls; Shut Up and Play the Hits
In the wake of the absurd levels of hype (both authorised and otherwise) that preceded its long-awaited cinema release, it was perhaps inevitable that Prometheus (2012, Fox, 15) should have been judged a let-down by so many hardcore fans, going from the most anticipated to the most disappointing film of the year in the space of its opening weekend. Hopefully now that the brouhaha has subsided and the promotional caravan has left town it's possible for viewers to see the movie for what it is, rather than what they wanted it to be. In an age of machine-tooled, head-banging franchise fantasy fodder, it's good to find an unashamedly grandiloquent sci-fi flick with big ideas and foolhardy ambitions, even if only some of them are realised. In the words of ultimate space-trooper Buzz Lightyear, it may not be flying but it's certainly falling with style.

With the London Olympics just around the corner, it is little surprise that filmmakers are mining the hype and excitement for all it is worth. It’s just a shame that they haven’t managed to concoct a more thrilling and jubilant effort than Fast Girls, a garden variety sports film which rattles through as many cliches as possible right through to the finish line.
The debut feature from Regan Hall follows athlete Shania Andrews (Lenora Crichlow), a runner who competes locally. When she is offered to come aboard a relay team, it means joining forces with local rival Lisa Temple (Lily James), making for the most uneasy of partnerships. Inevitably, it is putting aside their differences – a tall order – which will allow them to take Gold at the World Championships.

Rock Of Ages (12A)
(Adam Shankman, 2012, Us) Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones. 123 mins
Doing for 1980s hair metal what Mamma Mia! did for Abba, this glossy musical gives you the broad pleasures of pantomime rather than rock'n'roll danger, with theatrical star turns and a playlist of power ballads hung around an archetypal tale of a smalltown girl and a wannabe rock star boy on La's Sunset Strip. You can stop believin' now.
Cosmopolis (15)
(David Cronenberg, 2012, Fra/Can/Por/Ita) Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Sarah Gadon. 109 mins
Don De Lillo's prescient novella makes for a cool Manhattan odyssey, centred on Pattinson's jaded banker and the Occupy zeitgeist.
Polisse (15)
(Maïwenn, 2011, Fra) Karin Viard, Joey Starr, Marina Foïs. 128 mins
A Wire-like approach to a French child protection unit reaps dividends for this docu-style procedural.
Red Lights (15)

Fast Girls, a film about a British women's sprint relay team, might just repeat the success of the 1981 Oscar winner
When the film director Hugh Hudson and producer David Puttnam sought the perfect cast to play the athletes in Chariots of Fire, they wanted relative unknowns in the lead roles. Their strategy worked: the film went on to win four Oscars in 1981, earning the status of a British classic.
The director and producer of Fast Girls, a new British film about the UK athletics team, started from the same principle and with hope for the same outcome. Regan Hall, a New Zealander directing his first feature film, was determined to find young actresses who could be credible as elite athletes.

Not to perpetuate a stereotype, but as a film journalist, I tend not to spend much time in training venues. Consequently, it was with some surprise that I found myself walking around a sports centre in the East End of London at some hideous time in the morning.
Of course, there was a reason for my impromptu interest in athletics – the same reason that the exterior of the building was dominated by huge white trucks and enormous lights, mounted on crank stands – it was currently being used as the location for the filming of Fast Girls.
“The idea for it, I had before Britain got the 2012 Games. That was four years ago – longer. I believe then it was World Championships. Then, obviously the Olympics rejuvenated the idea, and could we do it.”

I don’t know if you’ve heard this, but apparently the Olympic Games are coming to London this summer. I know right! You’d think someone would have mentioned this. Apparently the producers of Adulthood and The Iron Lady knew as Fast Girls, a good-natured, feel good sports drama set in the world of athletics couldn’t coincide better with the Olympics if they convinced Danny Boyle to screen it at the opening ceremony.
Co-written by and co-starring Noel Clarke, Fast Girls follows the journey of Shania (Being Human’s Lenora Crichlow), a young woman from a poor background who runs a mean hundred metres. Her prowess gets her into the Gb squad and...

Of the 22 films in contention for the prestigious Palme d'Or, not one has a female director. And while women's lives are getting more attention on screen, the struggle to break in to the rough and tough old boys' club of directing appears as hard as ever
Cannes' fabled Croisette promenade was dotted with the customary festival starlets in high heels and glamorous dresses yesterday afternoon.
But just behind them, a feminist uprising of sorts was in full swing. Inside a landmark hotel on the seafront strip in the South of France, loud calls for positive discrimination in favour of women's films were being voiced. The impact of British director Andrea Arnold's public anger about the failure to include a female director in the prestigious Palme D'Or line-up continues to stir controversy at the annual celebration of world cinema.

Regan Hall’s debut film looks set to benefit from the Olympic fever which is set to spread across the UK this summer and today we’ve got a first look trailer for you to enjoy.
Fast Girls sets its scene around the high profile athletics championship and there’s hints of class rivalry and inspirational speeches aplenty on show here. Noel Clarke co-wrote the film and takes a leading role as the team’s coach with Lenora Crichlow, Philip Davis, Lily James and Lorraine Burroughs lining up to star in the film. Crichlow has impressed on the small screen with roles in Sugar Rush and Being Human, and as long as there’s a reach beyond the stereotypical we should be in for a fun ride.

Shooting is about to start in and around London on Fast Girls, a feature film about a rivalry on the athletics track between two girls from different backgrounds, scripted by Noel Clarke, Jay Basu and Roy Williams and directed by commercials director Regan Hall.
Two worlds collide on the athletics track when streetwise Shania meets ambitious, middle-class Lisa. The two girls eventually overcome their rivalry and unite to achieve their ultimate dream of reaching a championship final.
Lenora Crichlow (Being Human), represented by Bwh, takes the lead role of Shania, a 100m sprinter from the London ghetto.
Guildhall drama school graduate Lily James (represented by Tavistock Wood) who received rave reviews for her portrayal of Desdemona opposite Dominic West in The Sheffield Crucible's production of Othello, stars alongside her as Lisa. Lily played Ethel Brown in last year's Cbbc drama Just William.
