There’s a rich, storied history of independent bookstores in Southern California, from Pasadena’s Vroman’s to Chevalier’s Books in Larchmont Village (which has welcomed everyone from Howard Hughes to Aldous Huxley and Nat King Cole through its doors, which first opened in 1940).
Now, as some consumers tire of buying books online from faceless corporations, a new generation of community-focused shops is sprouting up throughout Los Angeles – giving life to writers and readers across different neighborhoods.
In Pasadena, there’s Octavia’s Bookshelf; in Highland Park, North Figueroa Bookshop; in Mid-City, Palm Grove Social; in Santa Monica, Zibby’s Bookshop. All serving vastly different audiences with unique and carefully curated stock, LA’s indie bookstore movement is a reminder that print isn’t quite dead.

Stars: Chris Bell, Carl Wharton, Marcus Langford, Dawn Butler, Jas Steven Singh, Rare Bird, Raven Lee Melvyn Rawlinson, Sophie Marlowe, Natalie Rayner, Helen White | Written and Directed by Steve Lawson
Leicester-based filmmaker Steve Lawson seems to have struck up quite the partnership with UK distributor High Fliers Films, having had the last half a dozen or so films he’s made released on DVD here in Blighty – distribution that has seen his films hit supermarket shelves across the country. That’s probably because Lawson has recently focused on making genre films based on familiar tropes – Dracula, Jack the Ripper, Jekyll and Hyde; hell Lawson has even tackled the likes of the Musketeers and Dick Turpin!
With The Mummy: Resurrection Lawson tells his version of the all-too-common undead horror icon, turned cliche. And by his version, I mean a film made on the cheap and on as little a number of...

“Dream Doll,” a biopic based on Barbie Doll inventor Ruth Handler, is in development with Bron Studios, Rita Wilson and Rare Bird Films, Variety has learned exclusively.
The film will chronicle the life of Handler as she founded Mattel in 1945 and created the now-iconic Barbie doll, named after her daughter Barbara, in 1959. Handler was one of the first women to run a Fortune 500 company. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1970 and died in 2002.
“The world should know about the phenomenal woman behind the doll,” said Handler’s daughter Barbara and granddaughter Cheryl Segal. “We have chosen to work with Rita Wilson, Cristan Crocker, Andrea Nevins and Bron Studios to bring Ruth’s story to life. Working with them on this project seemed like a perfect fit because we feel that they recognize just how inspiring and empowering Ruth was.”
Oscar-nominated screenwriter Melisa Wallack (“Dallas Buyers Club”) will adapt the script,...

Update: Rare Bird Books attorney David S. Eisen has responded on behalf of the company:
“The complaint filed against Rare Bird by Natasha Tynes is baseless for a host of reasons, chief among them: Rare Bird has never had any agreement of any kind with Ms. Tynes, nor has anyone from Rare Bird ever had any contact with her whatsoever, and Rare Bird’s statement about Ms. Tynes’ conduct was not defamatory.
Ms. Tynes’ publisher, California Coldblood, arranged for Rare Bird to distribute the book. As Rare Bird has stated previously, the company could not in good conscience be affiliated in any way with Ms. Tynes’ book, given her actions on social media.
As for the amount of damages Mr. Tynes claims to be seeking, it is worth noting that her book had pre-orders of less than 50 copies, and only a few hundred were scheduled to be printed. And it was not initially well-received.

Exclusive: CAA has signed Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber whose debut psychological thriller Cam from Blumhouse was acquired by Netflix following its premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival last July.
Directed by Goldhaber, and written by Mazzei, Cam follows an ambitious camgirl, Alice (Madeleine Brewer) who wakes up one day to discover she’s been replaced on her show with an exact replica of herself. The pic won best director and screenplay at Fantasia and went on to play AFI Fest and the London Festival last fall.
Currently, Mazzei and Goldhaber are in development with Blumhouse on another female-driven horror thriller. The team was also hired to write and direct one of the segments of 50 States of Fear for Quibi, Gunpowder & Sky, and Sam Raimi.
Mazzei’s forthcoming memoir, Camgirl, will be published in November by Rare Bird.
Mazzei and Goldhaber will continue to be managed by Anonymous Content.
