The winners of the 13th annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards were revealed Sunday night at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.
Anton Monsted won best music supervision for a film budgeted over $25 million for Elvis, while Lauren Marie Mikus and Bruce Gilbert won the award for a film budgeted $25 million or under for Everything Everywhere All at Once. The latter film also won best song written and/or record for a film for “This Is a Life.” Rob Lowry took home two awards for his work on Cha Cha Real Smooth and Do Revenge.

It was an historic night for female filmmakers at the British Independent Film Awards, with 10 of the night’s biggest awards going to women or films directed by them. The biggest winner of the night was “Aftersun,” which won Best British Independent Film, as well as Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Debut Director for Charlotte Wells. The film also took home prizes for cinematography, editing, and music supervision.
Georgia Oakley’s “Blue Jean” also had a strong showing, with Rosy McEwen winning Best Lead Performance and Kerrie Hayes winning Best Supporting Performance and Oakley winning Best Debut Screenwriter. Shaheen Baig also won Best Casting for the film.

Two of the best and most intriguing films of the year have something in common: music supervisor Lucy Bright. Both “Tár” and “Aftersun” contain some of the most riveting musically based sequences in 2022 cinema, and although Bright can’t take credit for either the use of Mahler’s fifth symphony in the former or Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure” in the latter — those having been baked into their auteurs’ scripts — the delicacy with which she made the combinations of original score and source music work in both pictures is evidence of a sensibility that more than lives up to her surname.

Mess Hall star turned film composer Jed Kurzel has signed a deal with Chester Music/G.Schirmer Australia, representing his publishing rights for all projects..
Kurzel broke out by doing the score for his brother Justin's debut feature Snowtown. He's since composed the music for Slow West, The Babadook, Son of A Gun, All This Mayhem, and Benedict Andrews' upcoming Una, starring Ben Mendelsohn and set to premiere at Tiff next month..
Andrews and the Kurzels go way back, with Justin designing some of the productions directed by Andrews when he was a resident director at the Sydney Theatre Company.
Jed Kurzel is currently based in London, where he worked on the score for his brother's Macbeth and is currently scoring his first studio film, Assassin's Creed: Time Out Of Mind, again directed by Justin and starring Michael Fassbender. .
