Maryland signed a new ticketing bill on Thursday that’s set to outlaw some of the live music industry’s most common deceptive ticketing practices: Hidden fees and speculative ticket listings.
Maryland governor Wes Moore signed the legislation on Thursday afternoon, weeks after it first passed through the state’s senate. Fees tacked onto ticket prices are one of the most oft-bemoaned aspects of the buying process for customers; while the fees themselves still stand with Maryland’s new law, requiring an all-in pricing system means that fans see the...

Updated: President Joe Biden said that search and rescue operations are the top priority to find the six missing in this morning’s Baltimore bridge accident, in which a cargo ship slammed into the span and it collapsed.
“Our prayers are with everyone involved in this terrible accident, especially those waiting for news of their loved ones right now,” Biden said in a statement at the White House.
Ship traffic in the Port of Baltimore has been suspended, Biden said, while the bridge collapse has closed a major artery in the Northeast Corridor.
Biden said that the Army Corps of Engineers will lead the effort to clear the channel, and “we’re going to get it up and running as soon as possible.”
He also said that “it is my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect the Congress to support my effort.

Maryland’s new governor Wes Moore invited a special guest to introduce him at his inauguration on Wednesday: Oprah Winfrey.
Moore, 44, the state’s first Black governor, hosted a show for the Oprah Winfrey Network, and Winfrey campaigned for him in last year’s midterms.
“Wes Moore has been a public servant his entire adult life,” Winfrey noted in her remarks. “He’s just getting started.”
Calling Moore “a man I truly respect and a man I so trust,” Winfrey recalled meeting him in 2010, when she interviewed him about one of his bestselling books.
“He was wise beyond his years,” Winfrey said.
She also recalled her own time living in the state. She moved to Columbia, MD, to work at Wjz-tv, where she first was co-anchor of the evening news. In her remarks, she recalled that she was featured on billboards with the question, “What is an Oprah?”

Barack Obama stopped by The Daily Show on Thursday to discuss why he believes youth turnout made a huge difference in the midterm elections and how globalization, disinformation and media infrastructure have contributed to democracy weakening around the world.
Trevor Noah began his conversation with the former president by asking him two questions: if he feels pressure to come out and support new Democratic candidates, and what he thinks it means for the party that he always has to hit the campaign trail.
While it seemed like Noah was hinting at the fact that Obama was a major factor in the Democratic victories this year, he shut down that notion and countered by saying he thinks it had everything to do with the people who were running.

Voters in Tuesday’s midterms delivered a series of historic firsts for minorities and marginalized people. Minority candidates, women, and members of the LGBTQ community will be taking up the mantle of elected office in their states for the first time.
In both local and national races, LGBTQ individuals will be occupying seats and offices for the first time, overcoming an election cycle marked by vicious attacks against the LGBTQ community.
In Massachusetts, Maura Healey defeated Republican Geoff Diehl to become both the first woman and first open lesbian to hold the state’s governorship.

Mehmet Oz, running for Senate in Pennsylvania, got a big boost in his TV career from Oprah Winfrey.
But she’s not lending that support to his political ambitions.
Winfrey said that if she lived in Pennsylvania, she would support his rival, John Fetterman.
Weighing in with just days left before the midterms, Winfrey said that there were “many reasons” why she was supporting Fetterman, but also noted that she also backed Democrats in other races across the country.
In a statement, Winfrey said, “At the beginning of the midterm campaigns, I said it was up to citizens to vote for who would represent them. If I lived in Pennsylvania, I would have already cast my vote for John Fetterman. On Monday night, Billy Joel was one of the few faces lingering in the otherwise largely deserted Times Square. His face appeared high in the sky, beamed onto 12 giant digital billboards in the famously chaotic midtown Manhattan neighborhood. It simultaneously beamed into TVs and internet livestreams as part of the Rise Up New York! Covid-19 benefit telethon, which Joel brought to a close with his 1976 New York City anthem, “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway).” A few blocks away, the lights of the Empire State Building sparkled in time with his piano.
