It seemed like even his last name, Wade, led him to do what he loved for a living: fishing and catching water monsters. The British-born television show host wasn’t always hands-on with his work though. Prior to appearing on River Monsters, Wade had a much different career.

Not only did he want to find these creatures, but he also aimed to educate viewers about them. If you’ve ever seen the show, you know that he came across some pretty interesting things. On Sunday night’s Mighty Rivers, host Jeremy Wade is searching for the endangered huchen or Danube salmon, a large species of freshwater fish in the salmon family. The huchen calls the Danube basin in Europe home, but unfortunately, the remaining population is threatened by factors that Wade is trying to determine, perhaps a type of pollution or just habitat loss. Read our interview with Jeremy Wade here! “Superficially there’s not much wrong with the Danube here. On close inspection, it looks better suited to huchen than anywhere I’ve seen so far,” says Wade. “It’s narrower, faster, the water is clearer […]

On this week’s River Monsters, biologist and extreme angler Jeremy Wade goes on the hunt of a mysterious underwater beast — which has been inflicting terrifying puncture wounds on fishermen. Wade travels to the volcanic South Pacific islands after reports of the unknown monster attacking the men while they worked out at sea. As they have spent their lives fishing, the men are no stranger to the usual suspects that lie under the waves — like barracuda and trevally with their razor-sharp teeth. But they have been unable to identify the beast at the center of the attacks. Watch footage from...read more...

Animal Planet's most-popular series, "River Monsters," was renewed for an eighth season before it even started its seventh season in early April. So it's no surprise its latest season premiere was the most-watched premiere (in live+3 ratings) ever on the network. The show follows Jeremy Wade, an "extreme angler" as he travels around the world, searching for and learning about scary and dangerous aquatic creatures that may or may not be killing people. Episodes are framed as murder mysteries, so it's basically aspiring to be "Animal Planet"'s NCIS, as the network's president, Marjorie Kaplan, once told me. Why is it so popular? Let's look at clips from last season -- and a few from this season -- to see just what the appeal of "River Monsters" and its host is. Jeremy Wade does insane and stupid things In his quest to discover things and/or make dramatic television,...

Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys (2014)

I’m a huge “Piranha” fan, and I’ll watch anything (anything that is!) pertaining to lake horror. Hockey masked killers, prehistoric monsters, government altered mutated fish, toxic waste mutated marine life and even zombies, are all enhanced when set at a lake. It’s in a more confined space than the ocean, there’s usually plenty of expendable characters getting their vacation on to up the body count, and it makes one think twice that fresh water is absolutely, positively safe.

It probably wouldn't surprise you to hear The Asylum has a new nature gone amok flick titled Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys starring Shannen Doherty and Christopher Lloyd premiering on TV this Memorial Day weekend.

The terrifying sea creatures featured on these pages make for pretty intense nightmares, but most don't pose a threat to humans (except maybe for this Amazonian pacu fish, which will literally bite your nads off). But that's not the case for the Goliath Tigerfish (Hydrocynus goliath), which has more in common with the giant flesh-ripping carnivores in the Piranha movies than actual piranhas. Native to the Congo river in Africa, the Goliath can grow to over 5 feet long and weigh over 150 pounds. Combine that with massive, razor-sharp teeth and a ferocious predatory nature, and you've got a real-life sea monster like no other. Tigerfish can hunt in packs, but the larger ones tend to go solo, drifting in the currents until they catch sight of a target, then zoom in for the kill (they're also among the world's fastest water predators). This beast is not easily intimidated, so if you're in its way,...

The "River Monsters" finale saw Jeremy Wade go after one of the most-famous mythological creatures: the Loch Ness Monster. However, the search took Wade to Norway and put the Greenland Shark into his crosshairs.
According to Wade, the Greenland Shark could have been mistaken for the Loch Ness Monster since it's not your typical shark -- it's dark and has a small dorsal fin, hunts in deep, dark water and only occasionally surfaces. According to Wade, the Greenland Shark could have been mistaken for the Loch Ness Monster since it's not your typical shark -- it's dark and has a small dorsal fin, hunts in deep, dark water and only occasionally surfaces. Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week” has long been one of my favorite things to watch during the summer. It usually appeals to that part of me that is a biosciences nerd. Biology, biodiversity, comparative anatomy, zoology, these are all sciences that, in conjunction with paleontology can help us figure out what was going on millions of years ago on our planet. That’s still an idea that makes me gleefully overjoyed. The Universe is an enormous and mind-boggling place and science may not help us find all of the answers that we seek, but I do firmly believe that it’s going to help us get a lot closer to understanding how it all works.
I was really excited when I started seeing ads for Animal Planet’s “Monster Week”. Now, we also know that the Science Nerd has a constant companion in the Inner Cheese Monster. That’s that...

Jeremy Wade Interview on River Monsters Season 5
B Van Heusen
River Monsters and Jeremy Wade returned to Animal Planet tonight with a scary sounding episode titled Face Ripper. It began as a simple whodunnit or should that be WHATdunnit, after an unfortunate Bolivian was pulled from a river sans face. The doctor who conducted the autopsy on the man believed his wounds were consistent with piranha bites but Jeremy Wade wasn’t so sure having previously done his best to prove that the little fish are scavengers rather than killers. However, as the investigation progressed the evidence began to mount up and numerous locals insisted that black piranhas had been savaging anything and everything that passed through the river including stacks of fish and at least one rather fine looking white horse.
In the face of overwhelming evidence, Wade changed the course of his investigation and...

Animal Planet’s intrepid traveler Jeremy Wade returns to the network on Sunday 7 April in River Monsters season 5. Over the course of the new series, Wade will travel the globe in search of the rarest water dwellers known to man. Jeremy kindly agreed to give Best British TV an insight into the adventures he had while filming the new episodes.
The first episode involves a Bolivian fish called “The Face Ripper?” What can you tell me about this particular river monster?
“Every story on the show begins with an incident and this one was particularly horrific. About 18 months ago, a young Bolivian man dived into a river. He started having difficulties and then disappeared. Eventually, his body was pulled from the river but his face was gone. I saw photographs of the man and they were too gruesome to show on TV.

The latest installment of "River Monsters" (Sun., 10 p.m. Et on Animal Planet) found host Jeremy Wade visiting Western Australia.
He was in search of the critically endangered fish known as the Glyphis Shark. Discovered in 2002, there are thought to be only around 250 adults in the wild.
Amazingly, Wade caught one in the crocodile-infested Fitzroy River. "It’s the first time this species has ever been filmed," he said. "This shark is so rare," he added, "we’re only permitted to handle it for 60 seconds."
Wade's adventures continue each week on "River Monsters," Sundays at 10 p.m. Et on Animal Planet.

However, on a trip to Mongolia it was Wade himself who was being hunted. By ninjas no less.

Fans of Kaluga caviar had to think twice about their favored delicacy after watching the latest episode of "River Monsters" (Sun., 10 p.m. Et on Animal Planet). Jeremy Wade headed for the waters of Russia to track down a predatory monster that turned out to most likely be this famous fish. The Kaluba is a behemoth, growing to lengths of 15 feet, but it's also incredibly valuable and now nearly extinct.
Wade watched as police boats chased down poachers, and learned that organized crime is now dominating the Kaluga fishing trade. After all, one Kaluga sturgeon brings in as much money as a salmon fisherman makes in more than three years of hard work. No wonder things have gotten so ruthless. It's like a gold rush underwater.
Wade was able to finally get his hands on a Kaluga, and more optimistically, he found a baby one as well. Things aren't going great for the animal,...

On Sunday's night's episode he was in India, investigating a spate of grisly attacks in the Himalayas region. Frustrated by his lack of success in catching the river monster known as the Asian Slayer, Wade became cavalier.
