John Ott was born and raised in Lawrence, Kansas. He is the son of
artist Mike Ott (1945-1996), who signed his paintings M.OTT, and thus
John adopted J. Ott as his signature. From his father, he took a wry
sense of humor and visual imagination. From his mother, Genna Hurd, he
took his love of literature and a well-told story.
John studied playwriting and screenwriting in Rita and Burton Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing at New York University's Tisch School. As a playwright, his work has been featured widely, including productions by The Atlantic Theater Company and in the New York Fringe Festival.
Since 2004, John has maintained the popular filmmaking website Making the Movie.
