“Project Runway” premiered its 17th season on Bravo Thursday night with a new host, a new mentor, new judges and a new crop of designers competing for fashion supremacy. But that’s not the only thing that’s new about the series. After 15 years the show has introduced its first transgender model.
The season premiere episode, “First Impressions,” made a strong first impression when MiMi introduced herself to her designer for the first challenge, Kovid Kapoor. “I want to change the industry,” she told Kapoor. “I want to inspire all the transgender young generation who have a dream.” Kapoor’s overjoyed reaction to her opening up to him was one of the premiere’s most moving moments. “You’re a real goddess!” he told her. Watch that touching exchange below.

The upcoming season of “Project Runway” is set to feature the show’s first transgender model as the fashion design competition show moves toward inclusivity in its return to Bravo.
“We have full-figured models, we have African-American models, we have our first transgender model in ‘Project Runway’ this season,” judge Nina Garcia told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour on Tuesday.
In its 16 seasons, the show has yet to showcase a trans model on the runway, though it has featured at least one out transgender designer, three-time competitor Ari South, who transitioned between her first and second stints on the show.

“Project Runway All Stars” concludes its sixth season on Thursday, April 5, with a battle between the three final designers: Fabio Costa, Stanley Hudson and Anthony Williams. But are those the best three designers from the whole season? We asked our readers which of the 13 eliminated contestants they would bring back, and more than half of them were split between just two names: Ken Laurence and Amanda Valentine. Scroll down to the bottom of this post for the complete poll results.
Laurence led our poll with 26% of respondents saying he deserves to return to the competition, which is impressive considering that he only just left. He was eliminated in fourth place in the penultimate episode of the season, “History in the Making,” in which he had to design a six-piece collection, then show the judges one signature look, and then compete in a surprise one-hour design challenge, but after jumping through...

After 12 episodes of “Project Runway All Stars” season 6, the show is down to its 3 finalists: Fabio Costa, Stanley Hudson and Anthony Williams. But what about the 13 contestants who came and went along the way? Our readers didn’t see eye-to-eye with the judges about multiple eliminations, so if they had their say we might have ended up with quite a different finale lineup. Which eliminated contestant would you most like to bring back to the show? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
The elimination that shocked “Runway” fans the most was arguably Amanda Valentine, who according to our early polling was the front-runner to win the entire season. She went out in 11th place in “Fashion’s New Superheroes,” and an overwhelming majority of our readers thought the judges made the wrong call. Our readers also thought the judges were wrong to oust...

For the first time in “Project Runway” history — including both “All Stars” and the original series — the final five designers are all men: Edmond Newton, Fabio Costa, Anthony Williams, Stanley Hudson and Ken Laurence. That was a statistically improbable outcome given that women outnumbered men nine-to-seven at the start of the season. The only men eliminated were Carlos Casanova and Joshua McKinley. So we asked our readers what they thought of the lopsided victory for the male designers. Did the judges get it right, or did the women deserve better? Scroll down for our complete poll results at the bottom of this post.
Our respondents actually thought the judges did a good job picking the final five. A slight majority (53%) said the remaining designers really are the best of the best. That’s a little surprising given how passionately our readers have disagreed with some eliminations, including Amanda Valentine and Helen Castillo.

“Project Runway All Stars” eliminated Helen Castillo in Thursday night’s episode, “Rock Your Face Off.” That leaves five designers in the competition: Fabio Costa, Stanley Hudson, Ken Laurence, Edmond Newton and Anthony Williams. All five of them are men, which is not only unusual but historic. This is the first time one gender has swept the top five in the history of “Runway” — not just the 6 seasons of “All Stars,” but also the 16 seasons of the original series.
It’s all the more surprising in this season of “All Stars” because the women actually started out with the numbers advantage. There were an even 16 contestants at the start of the competition, but 9 were women while only 7 were men. However, over the course of the last 10 episodes all 9 women were eliminated compared to only 2 men who suffered the same fate. Carlos Casanova was booted in the season premiere, and then...

In 2010, a 23-year-old fashion designer named Andy South competed on Project Runway‘s eighth season and sparred against some wild competition: the histrionic Michael Costello, the deadpan hero Mondo Guerra, the unwaveringly self-assured Gretchen Jones (who won the season, outraging many devoted fans), and the sweet but bizarre Casanova. Now, the studious and methodical South is back as more confident alum for Project Runway All-Stars 3, which premieres tonight, but with a brand new life in tow.
Since South’s last appearance on Lifetime’s reality competition staple, the designer has completed a gender transition. Now, the Waianae, Hi native is a woman known by the name Ari South — a name picked out by Ari’s mother. We caught up with South to discuss pleasing a whole new panel of judges (including host Alyssa Milano), the story behind her new name, and how her personal transformation has affected her work.

There are two key ways to determine the “winners” and “losers” of Wednesday night’s American Idol “Songs From the 21st Century” telecast: Focus entirely on the singing — an antiquated approach that would have Nigel Lythgoe snickering into his post-show tea and crumpets (because you know that’s exactly how he gets his snack on). Gretchen Jones is the big winner of Season 8 of "Project Runway," but not without some controversy.
In possibly the most emotionally dramatic season of the design reality show, the Portland, Oregon native scored a major upset on the Thursday, Oct. 28 finale over fan favorite Mondo Guerra and fellow finalist Andy South.
Although everyone agrees that Jones has excellent construction skills, the judges and other contestants are split on her design aesthetic. Some say it's fashion forward and beautiful, whereas others find it older-skewing and unexciting. Jones is philosophical about her detractors.
"I understand. I can't please everyone and that's okay with me," she tells Zap2it. "I know that I represented not only myself, but to me where the modern movement to where fashion is going. I think when you're an accessible designer but maybe challenging certain things, it comes with a very critical eye. I feel I was a very strong competitor.

The goal of 'Project Runway' -- as described by Tim Gunn's catchphrase -- is to "Make it work." Of course, it's a lot of work to make it work, and not everyone can handle it. Some players don't have the talent, some don't have the drive. It takes 14 weeks to sort the good from the bad.
But nothing lasts forever -- not even the lengthiest season of 'Runway' ever. And so we reached the finale (Thu., 9Pm Et on Lifetime). Three finalists remained: Andy South, Gretchen Jones, and Mondo Guerra. Who would win? Heidi Klum called it the "toughest decision" in the show's history -- but really, it was and it wasn't.

Gretchen Jones stole the title of "Project Runway" season 8 winner from Mondo Guerra. These two, along with Andy South were competing against each other in the Thursday, October 28 finale, but it was the last-standing woman who impressed Heidi Klum and the rest of the judges with her collection.
In the final runway, Gretchen showed her signature feminine design which had some parts fitted and other flowy. Nina Garcia described her clothes ready-to-wear but said it could use better styling. She liked Gretchen's prints, particularly the patchwork pants. Michael Kors loved the jewelry, Klum thought the prints are repetitive while guest judge Jessica Simpson wanted to see it popping.
After a lengthy discussion, the judges agreed that the 28-year-old from Portland, Ore. has more quality than her peers. Gretchen, in tears, said, "Thank you so much." She added later, "My God, I needed this so bad, in so many different ways.

So "Project Runway's" most dramatic rose ceremony, err, finale ever concludes with an appropriately exciting, nail-biting final runway and judges deliberation.
In the end Gretchen Jones takes home the hard-fought win over Mondo Guerra and Andy South after offering up a collection full of feminine signature looks that the judges felt showed she had her finger on the pulse of what was coming next in fashion. So she started and finished the series with wins.
Before we get into the frantic preparations, though, we're treated to a mini reunion/sobfest. Most of the highlights are about the drama from the season. Seriously, waterworks everywhere.
Ivy is still irked, but her anger is directed at Gretchen this time. Wait, weren't they friends? It's no surprise that Mr. Nice Guy Michael Costello is the first to defend Gretchen. Then Mondo steps in. Then they discuss how Mondo befriended Michael C. Now it's a lovefest.

Three designers show collections during New York Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. But only one of them gets to be "in" when all is shown and judged. So who triumphed on the eighth season of Project Runway? Was it the wee Mondo Guerra, whose first name says it all when it comes to his talent? Or did Mondo get too "costumey," allowing Andy South's Laos-inspired separates to squeak by into the winner's circle? Or, did love-to-hate-her Gretchen Jones manage to elevate her urban-safari collection to runway-worthy high fashion? You're gonna love this. Gretchen upset the endlessly creative Mondo in the show's final moments, with the judges ultimately deciding that the...

Gretchen Jones has been named as the winner of the eighth season of Project Runway. The 28-year-old Portland, Oregon native nabbed the top prize over runner-up Mondo Guerra and third-placed Andy South in tonight's finale. Singer Jessica Simpson had joined Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia on the judging panel at Bryant Park. The collection - entitled 'Running Through Thunder' - was inspired by Jones's journey through the fashion industry and featured earth-toned pieces including long flowing chiffon dresses and pant suits. Garcia and Klum both agreed that the models looked "sexy and polished" while Kors loved the vibe of the collection, calling it "relaxed and easy". Simpson also said that she would love to wear most of the pieces shown. "This is crazy! I needed this so bad in so many ways," Jones said, as her (more)...

Project Runway's eighth season concludes tonight, and after Mondo Guerra, Gretchen Jones, or Andy South wins, that will mark the end of the third season on the show on Lifetime. The network has been pumping out seasons, but those who stuck around after the disastrous season six say that the show has gotten better, perhaps even topping its Bravo-hosted, Magical Elves-produced version in some respects. There's been evidence to the contrary: Tim Gunn ripped the...

You've seen the dresses, disasters and drama of Project Runway season 8, and Thursday, one designer will get his or her "in" with the fashion industry. So who's it going to be? Arguably, the favorite is Denver's Mondo Guerra, 32, who slowly became the season's sweetheart thanks to his colorful, patterned looks and inspiring backstory. He's facing off against Hawaii native Andy South, 23, whose structured, thought-provoking pieces have landed him in both the top and bottom three during the current season. The final competitor is Gretchen Jones, 28, a sustainable designer from Portland, Ore., who started off as the season's front-runner, but slowly...

Wow. So was Season 8 of "Project Runway" as dramatic for you as it was for us? We're hoping for some catharsis soon, but of course we have Part II of the finale to get through first. Let's hope no one passes out (oh wait, Ivy already did).
Down to the Final 3, and we admit we sorta wanted Michael Costello in the mix because where he goes, drama follows. Can you just imagine the catty comments the returning designers would have made? Would any of them even be able to work with him? And he's just the sweetest guy in the world.
Anyway, let's take a look at the three who actually are going to show at Fashion Week:
Andy South - He was terribly inconsistent but he slowly came into his own, which makes sense since he's only 23. He brings a unique warrior woman style into his designs, and has...

After eight seasons, Project Runway (TV)'s Nina Garcia says judging the upcoming finale (part one airing tonight at 9/8c on Lifetime) was her most difficult by far. "I voted to have two winners," she confides. Among the final four designers is edgy Hawaii native Andy South — "an excellent contender," Garcia says. "Great with texture, great with innovation. His aesthetic is very modern. Andy's biggest problem is time management." Confidence is no problem for eco-friendly Gretchen Jones. "She thinks she knows it all," Garcia chuckles. "She's great at making cool, relatable pieces, but I don't think she's used to hearing criticism."...

You may not know who Mondo Guerra is, but if you have even the slightest interest in fashion, you will soon.
Whether he wins this season of Project Runway or not – and only a fool would bet against that now, although with reality television, you never know – he's the unquestioned "It Girl" of the season. He's been in the top three almost every week, won three challenges in a row, and has charmed the judges, the home audience and his fellow designers equally.
And he's got more talent in his tiny little knee-sock-clad frame than all the rest of the contestants combined.
Guerra, who lists Pee Wee Herman as a major fashion influence, finds it all a little baffling. "I never expected it to be this way," he said, speaking softly. "When I was cast, and when I showed up for the first day, I never expected to get this far.

What an intense week! The closer we get to the finale, the more nerve-racking this show is!
The final five contestants got an awesome surprise on the Oct. 14 episode of Project Runway: A mini vaca in a huge presidential suite in NYC — complete with champagne and all! But the spoils didn’t last for long, as the competition is getting tougher!
Mayor Bloomberg was this week’s surprise guest, serving as the ambassador for the challenge. The task: Make a design inspired by NYC. Seems simple enough, right? Nope! With so many possible inspirations, from the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge to taxi cabs and a million skyscrapers, it’s impossible to pick just one to draw inspiration from and turn into a dress; now that’s a challenge!
Guide Tim Gunn isn’t holding anything back this late in the game, as he dropped remarks like...

Valerie Mayen has admitted to finding her time on Project Runway "more difficult" than she expected. The 32-year-old Ohio native left the design series during this week's episode after falling in the Bottom 2 alongside fellow contestant Andy South. Speaking to Digital Spy, she explained her take on the downhill journey she took on the show. "You know, I just think it was a matter of the way the show flowed. Perhaps they liked me, but they may have liked other designers better. Perhaps the fact that they weren't liking me as much as they anticipated was frustrating, because I wasn't performing the way (more)...

Sound the alarm! It looks like one of the Project Runway contestants gets physically taken away for stealing someone else’s design!
The competition is about to get very serious on second episode of Project Runway’s eighth season! “There’s an accusation about cheating,” mentor Tim Gunn tells the competing designers in the dramatic episode. And then … Smack! Someone gets punched in the face, an ambulances arrives, someone gets rushed to the emergency room And someone else gets put on a respirator. Omg!
“You copied my dress,” designer Michael Costello shouts at someone.
“What the hell were you thinking,” says Nicholas D’Aurizio!
“This gift and talent is a curse to me,” cries Mondo Guerra.
“I am a silent assassin when it comes to competitions,” says Andy South!
From what we can tell from the video, it looks as though maybe A.J. Thouvenot punches Michael Drummond.
