The Best Drama Writer category at Sunday’s 2024 BAFTA TV Crafts Awards was a pretty stacked one. “Black Mirror” creator Charlie Brooker was nominated with “Ms. Marvel” creator Bisha K. Ali for their work on “Black Mirror: Demon 79” while British favourite Sally Wainwright was cited for “Happy Valley,” a critical darling over here in the UK. Sarah Phelps was also nominated for “The Sixth Commandment” while Emmy-winner Jesse Armstrong was recognized for his work on awards-juggernaut “Succession.”
We spoke to Armstrong on the red carpet at the Craft Awards, which were held at The Brewery in East London. Armstrong was keen to point out the strength of his fellow nominees and how this category felt like a particularly impressive one, while he said he was grateful that his American show was recognized by the British BAFTAs.

Netflix’s anthology series “Black Mirror” has a pretty impressive BAFTA record, amassing a total of 24 nominations at both the BAFTA TV Awards and the BAFTA TV Craft Awards since 2012. Like the Creative Arts Emmys, the Craft Awards are dedicated to honoring the below-the-line categories. This year’s Craft Awards, which were just held on Sunday, added to the BAFTA record of “Black Mirror” by awarding them five nominations and two victories (more on those wins later).
Specifically, it was the fifth and final episode of the sixth season of “Black Mirror,” “Demon 79” that was nominated. We caught up with several key creatives behind this episode when we attended Sunday’s Craft Awards, which were hosted at the Brewery in East London by British documentarian and TV host Stacey Dooley. The BAFTA TV Craft Awards took place on Sunday, April 28, with British TV host and documentarian Stacey Dooley hosting the event at East London’s The Brewery. The ceremony was the first half of the two BAFTA nights honoring the year’s best TV, with the Craft Awards dedicated to below-the-line categories just like the Creative Arts Emmys.
We attended Sunday’s ceremony and managed to speak to a number of nominated artists, including Adiescar Chase, who serves as the composer for Netflix’s hit feel-good LGBTQ+ series “Heartstopper.” Chase explained to us how she created the iconic sound of “Heartstopper,” noting that her conversation with director Euros Lyn exemplified how she works on the show.
“The great thing about ‘Heartstopper’ is that, in season two, Euros asked that I make the music feel new, feel like it’s developing as we are with the characters. So, a lot of...

Stv has confirmed the acquisition of Lego Masters firm Greenbird Media, following Deadline’s exclusive report yesterday in the UK.
The Scottish network’s production arm, Stv Studios, has paid an initial £21.4M ($27.2M) for the company, whose assets include majority stakes in Lego Masters maker Tuesday’s Child Television and Crackit Productions. Israel’s Keshet International was previously the majority owner, with a 60% stake.
Yesterday, we told you Stv was nearing a deal for Greenbird, whose sale has been in the works since last year.
The deal boosts the number of labels within Stv Studios from nine to 24, as it aims to become the UK’s top producer from outside of London — a sector known within the country’s TV sector as the nations and regions. Stv will get new bases in Glasgow and London, and offices in Cardiff, Belfast, Brighton and Manchester.

Exclusive: Scotland’s Stv is close to acquiring on-the-block Lego Masters production group Greenbird Media from Keshet International (Ki), Deadline understands.
The deal could be unveiled imminently, it is thought, and may amount to a figure in the tens of millions of pounds. Having been acquired from BBC Studios (then BBC Worldwide) in 2018, Greenbird, which is run by Jamie Munro and Stuart Mullin, first began exploring its options last year, though sources this week have said owner Keshet International did not officially put in on the block.
Headquartered in Scotland, Stv is a listed broadcasting and production company that turned over £138M last year. Its production arm, Stv Studios, is making the likes of Apple TV+ drama Criminal Record and was behind Channel 4’s Screw. MD David Mortimer recently told Broadcast he wants Stv Studios to be the “biggest nations and regions indie.”

The announcement, in October, that Maya Jama would be the new host of Love Island was met with elation from fans across the country.
“This is Perfect,” gushed one commenter. “They couldn’t have hired someone better!!!!!!” buzzed another. Many joked that Jama is so gorgeous, the ITV2 reality show’s contestants would want to dump their partners for her.
But the new job probably didn’t come as a huge surprise to the woman whose mother has videos of her, at the age of six, declaring she would be on TV one day.
Jama, now 28, has always been determined. In interviews, she’s variously described her teenage self as “fearless” and being “tunnel-vision focused”.
But back then, life was not without its complications.
Jama was born in Bristol, to a Swedish mother and Somali father, and spent many of her weekends up until the age of 10 visiting her father in prison.

Danny Dyer has reflected on his initial casting in EastEnders, saying the show’s producer “took a risk” on him, as he waves goodbye to the soap after nine years.
The actor said “not in a million years” did he think he would have lasted almost a decade playing Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter on the series.
The 45-year-old actor joined the cast of the BBC One soap on Christmas Day in 2013, shortly followed by his on-screen wife Linda Carter, played by Kellie Bright.
After appearing in 1,150 episodes, Dyer is scheduled to leave the soap on Christmas Day this year, with dramatic teaser scenes of his character chasing his betrothed Janine Butcher out of Albert Square.
Dyer said: “It’s very emotional for me, I’m very attached to this show. It’s been a third of my career.

It says a lot that Katya Jones winning Strictly Come Dancing in 2017 is arguably the least interesting thing to happen to her since joining the show. Along the way, the Russian dancer has faced scandals, divorce and arguments with her partners, while honing a skill for polishing untrained celebrities into dance diamonds. Where certain pros who may now sit on the judging panel would get lumped with a “joke” contestant like, off the top of my head, Ann Widdecombe, and accept that stereotype, giving them unchallenging choreography and even, say, dragging them around the floor, Jones never does. For her, there are no “joke” contestants. Not Ed Balls. Not Tony Adams.
On day one of her first season in 2017, the pro was dropped in at the deep end. Partnered with Balls, a former shadow chancellor famous for, among other things, tweeting the words “Ed Balls” with no explanation, she chose to swim.

Last weekend, a dance-off decision landed Strictly in hot water… again. Singer Fleur East faced radio presenter Richie Anderson in the bottom two, despite the fact both had placed respectably in the middle of the leaderboard. East and her partner Vito Coppola had performed an elegant American smooth to “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. Anderson and Giovanni Pernice, meanwhile, had spent a good portion of their samba to “Hakuna Matata” faffing around (as Len Goodman would have grumpily put it) dressed as a meerkat (Anderson) and a surprisingly curvaceous warthog (Pernice).
Now, you don’t need multiple Latin championship wins under your belt – as head judge Shirley Ballas has – to see that there was a clear winner to this “Battle of the Disneys” dance-off, and it wasn’t Anderson. The other judges unanimously voted to save East, meaning she stayed in the competition, but Ballas admitted her...

BBC Three returns as a broadcast channel on Feb. 1 with a renewed focus on youth.
“BBC Three was always focused on that under-35 demographic historically, and so that’s definitely a core part of our DNA,” says BBC Three controller Fiona Campbell. “The new iteration of where we’re at creatively – we’re focusing on 25s and under. That’s our creative sweet spot because it’s a very specific stage of life.”
Campbell, speaking at a media round table, added that the commissions for the channel are from across U.K. regions. They include “Conversations With Friends,” another coming-of-age Sally Rooney adaptation after the success of “Normal People”; “Hungry For It,” a food competition format featuring Big Zuu, Stacey Dooley and Kayla Greer; “The Drop,” a streetwear competition with Clara Amfo and Miguel; and vehicle based show “Gassed Up” hosted by Mist.

BBC One game show This Is My House has been given a second season run of ten episodes in an evolved 30-minute format.
The show sees four people all claim to be the same person and that the house in question is their house. A panel of celebrities is then tasked with sussing out which of them is telling the truth.
This Is My House was created by Richard Bacon and Nick Weidenfeld, and produced by Expectation. BBC Studios handles international licensing.
Bacon told Deadline that he is in discussions with a number of potential U.S. homes for the format. “In the U.S. the range of homes over 50 States coupled with the fact Americans are the best liars will make it a great fit,” he added.
Season one averaged 2.8 million viewers. It was presented by Stacey Dooley, who will not be returning for season two due to the new format,...

Exclusive: Richard Bacon is used to reinventing himself. The British presenter was notoriously booted off iconic BBC kids show Blue Peter after being caught binging cocaine, but survived the ignominy to become a near-ubiquitous presence on UK television and radio. By 2016, Bacon relocated to America to host Nat Geo’s Explorer series and later, Fox syndicated talkshow Top 30. But it’s his latest career twist that is perhaps the most remarkable: Bacon has transformed himself from the man in front of the camera, to the one creating the content — and he already has a Universal Television Alternative Studios overall deal and three series to show for his efforts.

Exclusive: Netflix has greenlit a new version of BBC Three’s high-concept masked dating show, Sexy Beasts, as part of a wave of UK-made reality series, Deadline can reveal.
Produced by All3Media-owned Lion TV, Sexy Beasts is a bit like The Masked Singer but for dating. In a format designed to spotlight personality, singletons are disguised in Hollywood-grade prosthetics before they go dating. Only once decisions are made about potential suitors do the elaborate masks come off.
The show ran for just one season on youth service BBC Three in 2014, but Lion had some success with the format internationally, including adapting it for A&e in 2015. It will now get a new lease of life as a 12-part series on Netflix.

Major UK charity Comic Relief, founded in 1985 by Lenny Henry and Richard Curtis in response to famine in Ethiopia, says it will stop sending celebrities to Africa for fundraising appeals due to recent criticism.
Celebs including presenter Stacey Dooley and Ed Sheeran have been branded “white saviors” for making videos in poverty-stricken villages. Dooley travelled to Uganda last year and pictures of her holding a young boy were labelled “tired and unhelpful stereotypes” by Labour MP David Lammy. Sheeran’s trip to Liberia in 2017 for the org was similarly called “offensive and stereotypical.”
“The world does not need any more white saviors,” Lammy was quoted as saying, adding that picture conjured “a colonial image of a white, beautiful heroine holding a black child, with no agency, no parents in sight.”

You might want to start brushing up on your British slang, because RuPaul’s Drag Race UK is officially crossing the pond. New episodes of the international offshoot will air in the U.S. on Fridays (Logo, 8/7c) beginning Oct. 11, TVLine has learned.
Drag Race UK is a lot like the show you’ve known and loved for the past 11 seasons, only with a British flare. Michelle Visage still has a place at the judges’ panel, but Instead of Carson Kressley and Ross Mathews offering their two cents, Drag Race UK welcomes Alan Carr and Graham Norton to the table.
