Exclusive Updated with more details and names: Sony Pictures Television’s longtime head of comedy, EVP Glenn Adilman and his No.2, SVP Scott Landsman, are among several senior executives — I heard 7 — across different divisions at the TV studio that were let go today, sources tell Deadline.
Sony Pictures TV Studios co-president Jason Clodfelter will oversee comedy in the interim, until replacements are found. Adilman has been at Sony for 19 years, Landsman’s tenure has spanned more than a decade. The studio’s head of drama Lauren Stein is staying put.
I hear leaders in Business Affairs, Research and Media Relations also were impacted, including two well respected veteran female executives — Karen Tatevosian, EVP and Head of BA, who has been at the studio for 19 years, and Jennifer Solari, who has served as SVP, Media and Talent Relations for the past five years. Sony Pictures Television’s boutique production outfit Gemstone Studios along with creative agency Ideas United has selected Jenny Schuster’s dramedy Dirty Thirties as the winner of its inaugural Rising Storytellers Search, which seeks emerging voices and female-centric stories.
With this win, Schuster gets a pretty sweet prize package which includes a development deal with Sony Pictures Television’s Gemstone Studios as well as camera equipment, access to Sony Dmpc technical-virtual training and a subscription to Celtx Video Production Studio Software. On top of all that, Gemstone Studios plans to take Dirty Thirties out to buyers in February.
Dirty Thirties is a single-camera half-hour dramedy that follows Dani, a thirtysomething millennial who’s going through a bit of a reckless phase after being dumped by her long-term boyfriend. Not even close to where she thought she’d be upon entering her fourth decade, she resorts to pinot noir and ill-advised Tindering.

Fox is heading to Fantasy Island for the summer. The network has given a straight-to-series order to a contemporary version of the classic drama series. The project, from writer-producers Liz Craft and Sarah Fain (The 100), Sony Pictures TV and Gemstone Studios, will air next summer.
This marks the first green light for Gemstone Studios, Sony TV’s boutique label dedicated to premium independent production in a creative and efficient way. Gemstone and Sony TV will co-produce with Fox Entertainment.
Keeping the semi-anthological format of the original with a handful of main characters living on the island and new guests arriving in every episode, the new Fantasy Island, written and executive produced by Craft and Fain, delves into the “what if” questions that keep us awake at night. Each episode will tell emotional, provocative stories about people who walk in with a desire, but end up reborn to themselves through the magical realism of Fantasy Island.

In an effort to produce quality shows on a leaner budget, Sony Pictures Television is launching a yet-to-be-named boutique TV production label inspired by independent film, Variety has learned exclusively.

A string of women have left Sony over the past year — Christine Birch, Paula Askanas, Amy Carney, Andrea Wong and Jean Guerin come to mind — and now this: an email from two male executives inviting women to participate in a Women’s Creative Leadership Initiative “to better equip our women leaders with the tools necessary to amplify their voices.” It was signed by the two male execs: Tom Rothman and Mike Hopkins, the top managers at Sony representing both film and TV. Read the email below.
Bravo if women want to mentor other women and support is given for that from the top management, but the email as written is tone deaf and condescending to women. It suggests that the reason women aren’t being heard is they don’t have the know-how — or “tools” — to communicate. This is not about women being unable to express themselves. This suggests a broader cultural problem,...
