San Diego’s Thee Sacred Souls have had a whirlwind last couple of years, going from cutting demos and playing lowkey gigs to signing to Daptone, who released their eponymous album in 2022. It also included hitting the road for a full year, which was both hard and also thrilling, the trio tells Rolling Stone’s On the Radar.
They went “from playing shows in backyards and living rooms and alleys” to now having big crowds on the road, bassist Sal Samano says. “It’s a crazy experience, that many people just singing,...

Representing Latin American, U.S. Latino, and non-Latino artists who explore multicultural relationships from singular perspectives, the films at this year's Sundance Film Festival include an array of stories that showcase the diverse creative voices that exist within the Latino filmmaking community.
This list includes both films that have been created fully or partially by Latin American or U.S. Latino filmmakers, as well as those that deal with themes and ideas relevant to the Latino experience in or outside the Unites States, even if these were not created by Latino artists. The increasing interest in these stories testifies to how rapidly Latinos are becoming constant and strong voices in all areas of the film industry.
In order to highlight as many of these talented creators and films as possible, we’ve created a list that includes all the films at the festival that are helmed by or that incorporate Latino talent and those that focus on a specific aspect pertinent to the Latino community. Some are obvious standouts like Argentina's acclaimed dark comedy "Wild Tales" or Colombia's "Liveforever" from Carlos Moreno.
Then there are those who at first sight might not fit the parameters of what one could think is a Latino film. This is the case of films like Eli Roth's "Knock Knock," which is an English-language horror film whose co-writers, producers, and part of the cast are originally from Chile. There is also " Aloft," a drama in the Spotlight section, which is set between Canada and Minnesota and stars Jennifer Connelly. It was written and directed by Academy Award nominated Peruvian filmmaker Claudia Llosa.
The third case includes those films that deal with subjects that have Latino elements or that explore diversity in the U.S in some way. Examples of these are "The Strongest Man" from Kenny Riches, a film narrated in Spanish by its protagonist "Beef," a charming, yet lost Cuban-American man in Miami; or "Cartel Land" by Matthew Heineman, which focuses on the violence shared between Mexico and U.S due to the drug-fueled chaos that afflicts the region. On a lighter note, there are films like “City of Gold” by Laura Gabbert, in which Los Angeles is seen through its ethnic food and local idiosyncrasies.
In an effort to give exposure to those films in the program that don’t get as much attention, the list below starts with the Shorts Programs and ends with the Dramatic Premieres. Each title is linked to its page on the Sundance website where screening times and locations can be found. Regardless of what films you watch at the festival, it is likely that your eyes will be expose to the work of some amazingly talented Latino filmmaker, writer or actor, or those who appreciate our stories as much as we do.

On the Milky Road
Director: Emir Kusturica// Writer: Emir Kusturica
We had two Palme d’Or winner (Time of the Gypsies in 1998; Underground in 1995) Emir Kusturica pegged to unveil his latest film, On the Milky Road at Cannes in 2014, but no such luck. It looks like Kusturica took about a year’s break in filming (which isn’t completely uncustomary for him), which resumed summer of 2014. Now, a poster has debuted and we’re thinking this should finally be ready for 2015, especially since Kusturica has recently announced plans for a new project, a French/Belarus co-production set to film mid 2015. The films is inspired by Kusturica’s short film Our Life, and consists of three stories: the first story is about a soldier with a task to get milk in the nearby village and take it to fellow soldiers. The second is about a woman who gives him the milk,...

Exclusive: With the Afm wrapped late last week, Im Global is reporting robust sales despite what many considered to be a lackluster market. Stuart Ford’s Reliance-backed production, financing and sales company had what Ford says was one of the strongest AFMs in Im Global’s 7.5 year history. The success is part of a strategy of building relationships and a profile in growth markets like Latin America and Asia — bringing filmmakers to market to speak directly to buyers doesn’t hurt either.
The company had one of the more sought-after titles at the Loews in The Free State Of Jones. Gary Ross’ epic wartime action romance that stars Matthew McConaughey was presented to buyers on the first day of the market by Ross and producer Scott Stuber, as well as Adam Fogelson and Oren Aviv of Stx which is distributing in the U.S.

Due to the film’s against all odds protagonist, look for Forsaken (formerly known as Desierto) to be mentioned as a reference point to Who is Dayani Cristal?. Here, Gael García Bernal treks thru the desert again, but fights off the antagonistic forces that are Jeffrey Dean Morgan in this border drama that is still very much a white hot topic issue even for southern folks who may or may not be a in a bordering state with Mexico. Filmed in La Paz, Baja California, Jonás Cuarón’s sophomore film began production in March and benefits from a solid producing team including father Alfonso and uncle Carlos. Cuarón’s directorial debut Year of the Nail premiered at the 2006 Venice Film Festival and we imagine much of his focus was put towards 2013′s Gravity prior to focusing on this showdown.

"Words with Gods" will be presented at the Los Cabos International Film Festival’s Galas Program, Friday, November 14th.
Alonso Aguilar-Castillo, Director of Los Cabos International Film Fest, says, “The Festival is an encounter dedicated to a shared vision between Mexico, the U.S. and Canada. During our Third Edition through a thoughtful and inspiring program, Los Cabos will be the perfect scenario to present the film "Words with Gods". Consisting of 9 short films created by some of the most celebrated directors of the moment, each tells a story where faith plays a central role. A dramatic spectrum of cultures with each director creating a dialogue with what is closest to them through their shorts.
Mexican filmmaker Guillermo Arriaga directed the story "Gods Blood", as well as being the creator of the concept on which the film is based; he is one of the producers along with Alex García and Lucas Akoskin. His take on atheism, “God’s Blood" sent a shiver of recognition down our spines when we previewed it at the Careyes Film Festival earlier this year.
Other filmmakers, Warwick Thornton questions the Aboriginal spirituality, Hector Babenco the Umbanda, Mira Nair Hinduism, Hideo Nakata Shinto Buddhism, Amos Gitai Judaism, Álex de la Iglesia Catholicism, Emir Kusturica Orthodox Christianity, Bahman Ghobadi Islam.
"Words with Gods" is a panoramic and global history that questions birth and death, determining decisions, and lost and found faith.
"Gods Blood" directed by Guillermo Arriaga.
The order of the short films in " Words with Gods" was curated by Peruvian writer, Mario Vargas Llosa and the music was created by British musician, Peter Gabriel.
"I am very happy to be a part of Los Cabos International Film Festival with this project. I believe this is currently one of the most important festivals, with more interest from entrepreneurs and the media. The synergy achieved with this project is very interesting and has reached enormous levels of expectation”, said the film’s producer, Alex Garcia.
Alex Garcia himself is one of Mexico’s most prolific producers. To be able to speak with him at Los Cabos will be one of my most unforgettable experiences.
In addition, Los Cabos International Film Festival Third Edition’s Mexican Tribute will be dedicated to Guillermo Arriaga.

Further details have emerged of the marketing and release plans for religious-themed portmanteau picture Words With Gods, which features contributions from such directors as Guillermo Arriaga, Emir Kusturica, Mira Nair and Hector Babenco.
The film, which has been screening out of competition in Venice, is produced by Arriaga along with Alex Garcia and Lucas Akoskin.
Speaking in Venice, Paula Alvarez Vaccaro, who produced Kusturica’s contribution, has revealed that there will be “a big inter-faith” campaign to accompany the distribution of the film. This is being coordinated through Vaccaro’s London-based company Pinball.
Sales are currently being handled by Garcia’s LatAm Pictures.
“We are going to tackle different territories and different areas with different activities,” Vaccaro explained. The intention is to create events around each short that will promote inter-faith dialogue and debate as well as educational activities.
The film looks at everything from atheism to Aboriginal spirituality, from Serbian orthodoxy to Buddhism.

Trying to pitch the latest work of Alfonso and Jonas Cuaron to buyers in Cannes this week, reps for Im Global fell back on Alfonso Cuaron's highly acclaimed "Gravity" as a selling point.
Im Global's Stuart Ford says "In a way, 'Forsaken' is a de facto prequel to 'Gravity'. Jonas and Alfonso were working on the screenplay of 'Forsaken,' then called 'Desierto,' when they had a very similar concept and put it in space. So 'Forsaken' has a lot of themes similar to 'Gravity.' It's about someone in a spectacularly peaceful but perilous environment trying to get home."
Directed by Jonas Cuaron, "Forsaken" stars Gael Garcia Bernal as a man crossing an unguarded part of the Sonora desert to try to get into the United States when he and his fellow travelers are shot off one by one.
Cuaron penned the screenplay with Mateo Garcia.

Deadline revealed back in April that A Better Life star Demian Bichir was moving toward his feature directing debut on the indie Refugio. He’s set his cast—Eva Longoria, Jose Angel Bichir, and Jorge Perugorria (Strawberries And Chocolate)—and production is just getting underway in Mexico City. The film follows the title character, a young dreamer who’s born in the circus and embarks on a search to find his long lost true love. That character will be played at various points in his life by a series of actors including Demian Bichir himself. The majority of screen time goes to Jose Angel Bichir, who is the director’s nephew. Longoria plays a horse acrobat who joins the circus in Mexico trying to heal a broken heart. Stefanie Sherk, Ana Claudia Talancon, Arcelia Ramirez and Ludwika Paleta also star, and Julian Fidalgo will play the young Refugio in flashback scenes.
