Only a comedic mind like John Mulaney’s could mine gold from one of the lowest points of his life. The comic released his third Netflix special, “Baby J,” in April. In stark relief to his previous, more ebullient hours, his latest work examined his 2020 drug relapse and the intervention that led to a successful stint in rehab.
“Going to rehab and a lot of other things had become public knowledge, and I felt there was no way to start doing stand-up again without going through this,” he tells Variety now. “I also had a lot to say about it. It had been an extremely eventful time, and the goal from the beginning was to do this as funny as I could make it — not as impactful as I could make it, not to pause for dramatic effect. I just wanted it to be a little wilder and put you in my very confident,...

Which celebrity will be win the coveted title of “Best Guest of the Night”?
That’s the question that TruTV’s “Talk Show the Game Show” asks when it premieres on April 5. When stars visit late-night talk shows to promote a project or themselves, they need to play nice to win over the host, Guy Branum (“Chelsea Lately,” “The Mindy Project”) and audience. “Talk Show the Game Show” awards them for these skills.

For example, points can be awarded for getting applause by naming a city, flashing the host, singing, using a euphemism instead of swearing and making the audience go, “Aww!”
But beware. Being a bad guest is “grounds for sanction,” whatever that means. (Can we vote for pie in the face?) Bad behaviors include excessive name dropping, white male fragility, being boring, failure...

When comedians Beth Stelling and Courtney Pauroso came together to share their stories of sexual and physical abuse from another member of the L.A. comedy scene, they were part of a growing sisterhood: As BuzzFeed's Katie J.M. Baker reports, female comedians all over the scene have increasingly turned to private Facebook groups as a way to tell stories of — and sometimes expose — male abusers in their midst. Like much of the entertainment business, the comedy world in Los Angeles is dominated by men, and many women say the usual pressure for women to stay quiet about mistreatment from male teachers and collaborators is intensified by the improv philosophy "yes, and" — the need to be game, up for anything. And the comedy industry's tremendous growth over the last half-decade, paired with the blurring of the lines between fan, participant, and instructor, means that L.A.'s comedy theaters have...

When comedian Beth Stelling went public with her story of being raped and abused by an ex-boyfriend late last year, she was careful not to use his name. Soon, though, Stelling's friends in the L.A. comedy scene identified him as Cale Hartmann, a comic who has appeared on 2 Broke Girls and Key & Peele. Hartmann disabled his social media accounts shortly after the story broke, but he has since returned to Facebook with a lengthy post defending himself against the allegations, which he calls "false and extremely harmful." In Hartmann's telling, he's the victim of an internet mob that's attacking him without knowing the full story. As he puts it, "My career and life do not deserve to be taken away without some basic level of due process just because of an allegation on the Internet ... people take joy in destroying me as the new villain of the...

While 2015 was a year in which Beth Stelling released a stand-up record, Simply the Beth, and a Comedy Central Half Hour that landed her on Vulture's list of the best specials of 2015, it was also one in which she was in a physically, sexually, and emotionally abusive relationship with her now ex. Today on Instagram, Stelling posted a photo of her legs covered in bruises along with a long note that detailed months of abuse she suffered from the relationship. "It's embarrassing. I feel stupid," she writes. "After being verbally, physically abused and raped, I dated him for two more months. It's not simple." For a time, she respected his wishes not to talk about the relationship in her stand-up, in an effort not to “hurt” him. She doesn't name her ex, but says that it's now important for her to speak out about this, because her work directly pulls from her life.

This week on Polished: Comedian Beth Stelling and host Jamie Lee recount their best horror stories from performing stand-up. Stelling, who lives in Los Angeles but cut her teeth in Chicago's famous comedy scene, has a good one that has a nice extra layer of embarrassment. It's the kind of thing she mines well on Sweet Beth, her great debut stand-up album, which she released in 2012.
