Vice TV has announced investigative doc “Vice Versa: College $ports, Inc.,” exposing the allegedly exploitative relationship between the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and student athletes.
The 90-minute “Vice Versa,” for which Vice is launching a trailer (above), is directed by Patrick Dimon and hosted by former Olympian and NCAA athlete Jeremy Bloom and will premiere on Vice TV in the U.S. on June 9.
“American college athletics is a $14 billion dollar annual business, but NCAA athletes do not receive a salary or benefits, are not cut into the profit system, and are precluded from entering the free market or signing any endorsement deals,” reads the potentially explosive doc’s synopsis. “Now, host Jeremy Bloom is on a deeply personal mission to expose the system that wronged him and seek justice for his peers.”

Animated sequel Rio 2 could cruise to around $40 million this weekend, which would put it in a close race for first place against Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Meanwhile, Draft Day and Oculus are targeting more modest debuts.Captain America: The Winter Soldier set an April record last weekend with $95 million. Most comic book movies fall hard in their second weekends: similar movies Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World fell 58 percent and 57 percent, respectively. Captain America has better reviews and stronger word-of-mouth, though it would still be surprising if it dropped less than 50 percent. Playing at 3,948 locations, Rio 2 could give the Captain a run for its money. The first Rio opened to $39.2 million around the same time in 2011, and ultimately closed with a solid $143.6 million. The NFL Draft is so inherently exciting for sports fans that to release a “ticking clock” thriller about the day leading up to the event feels less like a good story idea than it does a way to generate excitement for the upcoming event, while cramming in as much team merchandise as the producers will allow. Draft Day, a new film from director Ivan Reitman, is only intermittently exciting and boasts few surprises, as well as a flat performance from Kevin Costner.
In a move that some sports movie fans may consider sacrilege, Costner has abandoned baseball for football. Here, he plays Sonny Weaver, Jr., an ambitious but hot-headed Cleveland Browns general manager trying to deal with the fallout of a potentially shoddy trade that he agreed to 12 hours before the NFL draft. He took Seattle’s first-round draft pick spot for the Browns’ first-round selections for the next three years.

Draft Day is a movie about football for people that don't know anything about football, the National Football League or the NFL Draft. The only inkling of realism might be found in the way potential draftees feel and worry up and until they hear their name called. Well, I guess you could also say that if this film offers any indication of how Cleveland Browns executives approach each year's draft it explains a lot about that franchise as well, but I think Cleveland sports has endured enough embarrassment already. Of course, once you consider this film is presented with the full support of the NFL you may as well chalk it up as a fantasy, because those guys aren't going to support anything that in any way would shed a negative light on themselves or any of their teams... though the Seahawks and Jaguars do come away looking like a bunch of doofuses.

One of my favorite people to interview is Terry Crews. I could probably shorten that to simply say that Terry Crews is one of my favorite people, because it's true. He is one of those character actors who makes anything better simply by being in it, a guy who is both visually distinct and also gifted with a really wicked sense of timing. He's great at comedy and he seems equally adept at drama when people give him that chance. The last time I spoke with him was during the release of "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2," and I had just seen the first few episodes of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." I talked to him about the potential of that show, so it was nice to be able to sit down with him again on the other end of the season to talk about just how great the show got in that first year.

Ivan Reitman's early comedies leaned heavily on the idea of the scruffy underdogs who managed to retain their personal quirks within systems designed to break them down. Whether it was the rowdy campers and counselors of "Meatballs" or the shabby soldiers of "Stripes" or the Ghostbusters, Reitman's movies seemed to celebrate these characters and the entire idea of rebellion. After those films, though, he became an A-list director whose movies seemed to lean on high concepts that were much less interesting. "Legal Eagles" and "Twins" were both dispiriting efforts that leaned heavily on movie star charisma in place of actual scripts and characters. In general, any film Reitman made with Arnold Schwarzenegger felt like a total refutation of the things that Reitman did well. The one bright spot in his post-"Ghostbusters" filmography was "Dave," which started as a sharp and funny script, and if "Draft Day" feels like any of his prior films,...
