The 17th Slovak Queer Film Festival kicks off on 22 November in Bratislava and the audience can look forward to 7 festival days, until 28 November. This edition introduces the FFi Shorts – International Competition, a competition of short films, presenting 3 Asian works: Adorable by Chung Cheng-hu, Mum, If I Were a Vampire by Deborah Devyn Chuang, and Shoot Your Shot by Mishaal Memon. In the Contemporary Cinema section, don’t miss the flamboyant comedy from the Philippines, I Love You, Beksman by Perci Intalan (2022).
A special programme Queer Hong Kong will open with a digitally restored version of Wong Kar-wai’s classic Happy Together (1997), winner of Best Director at Cannes 1997 and starring Tony Leung a Lesley Cheung, a Hong Kong queer icon. Aside from this film about lovers looking for happiness in Argentina, the section will also include the lesbian cult classic Butterfly (2004) from director Yan Yan Mak, whose brave ideas are still relevant today.

“Butterfly” was chosen as the Opening Film at Venice Film Festival Critics Week and Yuan Tian was awarded as Best New Artist at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2005. A total of 44 film projects, including one executive produced by the Oscar-winning Cate Blanchett, have been selected shortlisted for this year’s Golden Horse Film Project Promotion, organizers announced on Monday. The Chinese-language project market takes place on the sidelines of the prestigious Golden Horse Film Festival in Taiwan.
Among the selections, 37 are works in development. Seven are works-in-progress that are still searching for finishing funds or partners for co-production. Together with the 19 TV series projects announced earlier, this year’s Golden Horse Fpp boasts a total of 63 projects. Last year, the Fpp counted 40. In pre-covid 2019, it counted 39 development projects and 8 works in progress.
The majority of the projects originate from Taiwan and there are plenty of big names attached. Taiwan’s Golden Horse Film Project Promotion (Fpp) has unveiled this year’s selection of 25 films chosen from a record 117 submissions.
The organization stated “these projects reflect the active and engaged state of Chinese-language film industry in all corners of the world, including: Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, UK, France, Us, Australia, and New Zealand.”
Nine sponsoring companies offer post-production service awards and this year, a number of them will be increasing their awards to equal the symbolic amount of Nt$500,000 (Us$16,900) to celebrate the Golden Horse Film Festival’s 50th anniversary.
The Fpp’s Grand Prize is a cash award of Nt$1m (Us$33,800). France’s Centre National du Cinéma (Cnc) also offers the €10,000 Cnc Award to support projects with high potential for international co-production.

Directors Yan Yan Mak (Hu Die) and Clement Sze-Kit Cheng (Gallants) team up for a film that dares to gives some extra shine to the Hong-Kong arthouse scene.
