With eight nods, Luke Combs is the most nominated artist at the 59th annual Academy of Country Music Awards. The unveiling of this year’s nominations revealed that the musician is up for Song of the Year — presented to songwriters, publishers, and artists — for “Fast Car,” which also earns Tracy Chapman her first-ever ACM Awards nomination.
Trailing Combs with six nominations each are Megan Moroney and Morgan Wallen. Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, and Lainey Wilson each earned five nods, including Entertainer of the Year, while Jordan Davis and first-time nominee Jelly Roll racked up four.

Luke Combs is the man of the hour. The 59th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, April 9, and Combs came out on top with eight bids, including Entertainer of the Year. Check out the complete list of nominations here.
This is Combs’s fifth nomination in a row for Entertainer of the Year, an award he has yet to win. This year he’s up against Kane Brown, Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, Morgan Wallen and lone female nominee Lainey Wilson. Women are consistently underrepresented in Entertainer of the Year, though Carrie Underwood won in 2020 (in a tie with Thomas Rhett) and Miranda Lambert finally prevailed in 2022. But we mustn’t underestimate Wilson here. She pulled off a huge upset at the CMA Awards last fall, claiming Entertainer of the Year despite being relatively new on the scene.

Carrie Underwood is the country artist behind Play On, releasing “Cowboy Cassanova” and “Unapologize” in the collection. What made the 2009 album extra special, though, was that it was the songwriter’s “first attempt at love songs.”

In 2009, Underwood released her full-length album Play On, complete with “Mama’s Song,” “Temporary Home,” and “Look at Me.” Perhaps the most popular song from the collection is “Cowboy Cassanova,” currently holding over 70 million Spotify plays.

Carrie Underwood is a mom of two boys. In 2018, the country artist opened up about her three miscarriages — and how music became “therapeutic” to her. That’s especially true of her 2018 song “Cry Pretty,” which was inspired by traumatic events in her personal life.

Underwood sometimes details her personal life through music, elaborating on some of her hardest moments. In 2018, Underwood revealed that she suffered three miscarriages in the span of two years — before the birth of her son Jacob.
As noted by Hello Magazine, Underwood noted the rhetoric surrounding miscarriages, although she didn’t consider it a “dirty secret,” saying it’s something “many women go through.”

Carrie Underwood is the singer behind “Blown Away,” although this wasn’t the only tornado song written particularly with the country artist in mind. The co-writers mentioned their earlier song “Whirlwind,” it’s story, and why it was never officially released.

Fans were “Blown Away” by this track. Underwood released this No. 1 hit in 2012, featuring her iconic country sound and some unique themes regarding tornados.
“Shatter every window ’til it’s all blown away,” the chorus states. “Every brick, every board, every slamming door blown away / ‘Til there’s nothing left standing / Nothing left of yesterday / Every tear-soaked whiskey memory blown away, blown away, blown away.”
There’s references to the distruction of natural disaster, also telling the story of a particular family in Oklahoma caught in the tornado.

The most important character in Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel Daisy Jones & The Six? It’s the music – and any devotee of the book, a fictional oral history of a Seventies rock band, will have strong feelings about exactly how it should sound. It might have shades of Stevie Nicks, a touch of Joni Mitchell, a dash of The Eagles’ soft rock – and it has to feel vital, like it “takes a piece of your heart out and shows it to you”, as the group’s singer Billy Dunne puts it. The success of Prime Video’s Daisy Jones TV adaptation, then, was always going to ride on the songs – but how do you write the perfect track for an entirely made-up artist?

There were major changes in how these nominees were decided. Chief among those was the elimination of the nomination review committees. Gary Allan will release his first album in eight years with Ruthless, a collection of 13 songs due June 25th. It’s the follow-up to 2013’s Set You Free and follows a string of one-off singles he has released beginning in 2015.
The album news arrives with the record’s lead-off track, “Temptation.” Written by Nicolle Galyon, Chase McGill, and Jon Nite, it’s a pulsing mid-tempo song with emphatic drum hits and atmospheric string sounds. “I’m over getting drunk on you, but I’m always gonna miss that taste,” Allan sings.

Lady Gaga broke out in 2008, and since then her career has spanned music, film and TV. She’s an Oscar, Grammy, BAFTA and Golden Globe winner, among other plaudits. Just a few months after the 2020 Academy of Country Music Awards were delayed to last September due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2021 nominees have been announced. Maren Morris and Chris Stapleton lead with six nominations each. They’re followed by Miranda Lambert with five and Ashley McBryde and Thomas Rhett with four. Alicia Keys and Brandi Carlile have released a new duet, “A Beautiful Noise,” meant to encourage voter turnout in the 2020 elections.
The track is a straightforward but effective bit of piano balladry, with Keys and Carlile trading verses before coming together in perfect harmony, “It’s believing you belong/It’s calling out the wrong/From the silence of my sisters/To the violence of my brother/We can, we can rage/Against the river/Feel the pain of another/I have a voice.”

Alicia Keys and Brandi Carlile surprised viewers of a voter turnout special Thursday night with a duet performance of a new song, “A Beautiful Noise,” which they immediately released as a single following the premiere on “Every Vote Counts: A Celebration of Democracy.”
Keys co-hosted the CBS special along with Kerry Washington and America Ferrera. When Carlile was added as a guest artist in recent days and tweeted that she was “doing a very special performance with someone I’ve wanted to collaborate with for a really long time,” there wasn’t much doubt a duet with Keys was in store (notwithstanding Carlile’s possible lifelong desire to harmonize with Offset or Dan + Shay). But the existence of a new song was still a surprise… though not as surprising as the songwriting credits for the new tune.

There is a woman nominated in every major category they were eligible in at the 2020 Academy of Country Music Awards, so women have shattered country music’s glass ceiling once and for all, right? I wouldn’t go that far. Female acts are in the minority in almost every one of those categories. And though there is a woman nominated for Entertainer of the Year for the first time in three years (Carrie Underwood), she’s still the only one out of the five.
