Exclusive: Brian Volk-Weiss’ Nacelle Company on Wednesday announced Billy Corgan’s Adventures in Carnyland, an eight-episode unscripted series that’s set to premiere on The CW app and cwtv.com on May 14th.
Directed by Volk-Weis and Ian Roumain, the series pulls back the curtain on how the legendary frontman of alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins takes on the world. When he isn’t churning out albums and touring the world with his band, Corgan works as a wrestling promoter through his storied National Wrestling Alliance, which he intends to restore to its former glory. As if being a rock star navigating the demanding politics of running both a band (Pumpkinworld) and a group of eccentric wrestlers (Carnyland) isn’t tricky enough, he’s also a father of two — and he’s planning a wedding to his longtime partner, Chloe Mendel. Can he possibly keep all these balls in the air?...

Tom Morello has tapped Phantogram for a new song, “Driving to Texas,” from his upcoming album, The Atlas Underground Fire, out October 15th via Mom + Pop.
“Driving to Texas” is a sprawling piece that builds from swooning verses filled with atmospheric synths, strings, and piano into a booming chorus driven by Morello’s keening guitar. “Believe, believe what I say,” sings Phantogram’s Sarah Barthel. “I’m driving to Texas/And now isn’t the time/You’ll break this transfixion.”

After Kelly Fremon Craig’s wonderful and unflinchingly real debut feature “The Edge of Seventeen” closed the Toronto International Film Festival, critics came out in force in support of the coming-of-age dramedy. IndieWire’s David Ehrlich called the movie an “instant high school movie classic” in his A- review, praising the “wryly hilarious and unflinchingly honest” screenplay and the career-best performance from Hailee Steinfeld. Not nearly enough people saw this gem when it was released in the fall, but luckily it’s coming to Blu-ray February 14.

Selections range from standards whose origins are self-evident (“White Christmas” was made famous by the film of the same name, while “Frosty the Snowman” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” are from the respective television specials) to a few you may recognize without instantly recalling where they’re from: Remember “Christmas Treat,” from the “I Wish It Was Christmas Today” skit on “Saturday Night Live”? Thousands of women auditioned for the role of angsty teen Nadine Byrd in Kelly Fremon Craig’s “The Edge of Seventeen,” but none of them fit the part. Fremon Craig’s directorial debut had a lot going for it: a lively screenplay in tune with the John Hughes movies that inspired it, and legendary comedy guru James L. Brooks as a producer. However, without a young woman able to convey Nadine’s frustrations with the world, its tricky comedy-drama balance would fall apart.
“The part is hard,” Brooks said. “We needed to have someone who could make it seem true and natural, and nobody could nail it.”
Fremon Craig was growing despondent. “We’re never going to make this,” she recalled thinking at the time.

Everything came together for film composer Jóhann Jóhannsson on “Arrival,” his third score with director Denis Villeneuve (following “Prisoners” and “Sicario”). Here he was able to broaden his avant-garde musical expression in a way that was totally in sync with the alien contact movie about language and communication.
“I have the luxury of working in pre-production with Denis, and the primary inspiration for the score came from the concept art,” Jóhannsson told IndieWire. “One of the main themes was written during the first week of shooting when the helicopter approaches the alien shell [or ship] for the first time.
“I did a session in Berlin where I was working with a 16-track tape loop and I recorded layers and layers of piano drones (sustained without the attack) at different speeds and slowed them down. So it took on the texture of the very tense drone with almost no processing. These were analog...

Two things: The delightful soundtrack for Kelly Fremon Craig’s new release “The Edge of Seventeen” does not feature a) The classic Stevie Nicks track from which it borrows its title or b) A song from its star Hailee Steinfeld, who also happens to have her own — very respectable! — pop music career, in addition to her long-running work on the big screen.
But don’t let that stop you from checking out the soundtrack, which is now streaming on Spotify, as it still features a hearty and exciting mix of talents as diverse as Aimee Mann, Two Door Cinema Club, Phantogram and Santigold. Ah, to be young again.

The 2016 box office continues unpredictable.
“Doctor Strange” lead the recent but short-lived box office revival, along with some hits that surpassed expectations (“Boo! A Madea Halloween” and “Trolls”). But the pre-Thanksgiving weekend came in below predicted numbers. After several years with strong franchise entries opening to over $100 million, the costly J.K. Rowling Harry Potter prequel “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (Warner Bros.), a potential major blockbuster, ended up with an acceptable but unexceptional $75 million total. The well-reviewed VFX extravaganza could build word of mouth as it goes along.
The Top Ten
1. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Warner Bros.) New – Cinemascore: A; Metacritic: 65; Est. budget: $180 million
$75,000,000 in 4,144 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $18,098; Cumulative: $75,000,000
2. Doctor Strange (Disney) Week 3 – Last weekend #1
$17,676,000 (-59%) in 3,694 theaters (-188); PTA: $4,785; Cumulative: $181,543,000
3. Trolls (20th Century Fox) Week 3 – Last weekend #2
$17,500,000 (-50%) in 3,945 theaters (-121); PTA: $3,945; Cumulative: $116,215,000

As if we weren’t excited enough for ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire!’ Lorde’s amazing cover of ‘Everybody wants to Rule the World’ is on the soundtrack — and you can listen to it right here!
Lorde takes on the 1985 hit by Tears for Fears for the film, which hits theaters on November 22. Her rendition of the song is much darker and slower than the original, which fits perfectly for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

The final Hunger Games trailer is here, and this one leaves off the development of previous trailers, and just goes for quick cuts of action moments. At this point, we know why we’re here, and we just want to see cool outfits, and the crazy things our hero will face.
Personally, I don’t know that it’s the right direction, because from the viewpoint of someone who hasn’t read the book (though I have), I don’t know that we really have any idea what’s going on. Of course, the theory could be that no matter what you know – another Hunger Games, with the victors – you know as much as you need to know.
Besides, let’s face it, you’re either in, or you’re out already, so why not just make sure we get you as jazzed as we can, so that we definitely...
