Now that American Idol is headlong into its "final" season (until the whole thing is rebooted as Idol Redux: America Strikes Back in 2022), I realize what I'll miss most about this white-bread karaoke pageant: the unbelievably awkward montages of Top 24 contestants dancing as Ryan Seacrest reads their names. Last night's Top 24 reveal didn't feature that classic sequence, which has been a mainstay of the series since the first few seasons. And that is a shame. Why? Because Idol is a dork circus and everyone deserves a chance to stand in the center ring and perform the pony for America's vote. In case you're unfamiliar with this gorgeous, ludicrously unflattering dance sequence, here is part of 2009's medley. Please watch in fear as Kris Allen goes full Caucasian with his startling "spank that ass" choreo. It's like he's foreshadowing the against-all-odds charisma that will win him the whole thing. Travel with...

Ten dames stepped up to the mic on Wednesday night. Nine of them sang. One of them exploded.
And was rewarded for it.
And... I'm fine with it? Let this be a lesson to everyone: If you are a fine singer who gets an opportunity to wow the nation on American Idol, but you choose the lite-fm nonchalance of Alicia Keys' "No One," maybe you deserve to finish between 20th and 40th place. Maybe I think that's justified, Cristabel Clacky. And maybe if you're a howling claymation clown sorceress named Zoanette Johnson who sets the bar for unthinkable camp monstrosities with a performance of (wait for it) "The Circle of Life," maybe you really do earn your place in the Top 20 -- even if you can't sing, control yourself, or really do anything except blubber and wail like a watercolor-drenched Pagliacci. Maybe.
Actually, I'm not sure. Zoanette Johnson was...

'I'm very nervous but I'm very excited at the same time,' 16-year-old contestant tells MTV News before the season 11 finale.

It's all come down to this: the finale of the 11th season of "American Idol", with 21-year-old guitar-strumming southern gentleman Phillip Phillips pitted against 16-year-old vocal powerhouse Jessica Sanchez. There are endless sports-related clichés we could use ("the end of the line," "the bottom of the ninth inning," " the home stretch"), but the point is, the end is really near.
When MTV News caught up with Sanchez moments before she headed into the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles for the start of the finale, we only had enough time to ask about how she was feeling at the end of such a whirlwind of a season.

U.S. presidents have typically stayed out of the "who is going to win 'American Idol'" fray in the past in order to avoid upsetting any voting blocs. But that doesn't mean that foreign dignitaries can't offer up their two cents.
That might explain why on the eve of the penultimate performance night on "Idol," the Associated Press reported that Philippine president Benigno Aquino III has wholeheartedly endorsed his choice for next week's finale: Jessica Sanchez.
"Hopefully, she really reaches the top," Aquino said of the 16-year-old top three finalists from Chula Vista, California, who is of Filipino and Latin heritage.

American Idol got off to a dry start last night and didn’t quite pick up the pace, with safe number after safe number, even with Gwen Stefani and No Doubt bassist, Tony Kanal joining Jimmy Iovine to mentor the remaining contestants for eighties week. The duets were more entertaining and engaging than the performances that actually counted for something, making voting decisions awfully difficult this week. One contestant did have her shining moment this week… and it wasn’t Jessica Sanchez. After warming up a seat in the bottom three, she definitely won’t be there this week. Aside from this killer performance, it’s anybody’s guess who will be going home this week.
The only remaining wild card in the competition, DeAndre Brackensick performed “I Like It” by Debarge and gave a good performance but by no means was it one of his best performances as host,...

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

American Idol dropkicked another contestant back to the Six Flags circuit this week, and I'm assuming it's not who you wanted. Because it's not who I wanted. And I know you agree with me! Truly, we should chat about Idol on Skype all day while our bosses wag their mean index fingers disapprovingly.
We had ten contestants left, but now we're down to nine. Who went home? Was it Heejun (for his asthmatic rendition of "My Life"), Joshua Ledet (who fumbled this week with his not-gay-enough version of "She's Got a Way" -- please stay gay, J.L.!), or Hollie Cavanagh (who's a fine singer, but her ballad thing has expired, Toscano*-style).
Nope, this week's loser is...
Damn, it's the feisty and super-talented Erika Van Pelt! If booting the handsome female contestant right as she adopts Rosie O'Donnell's post-Taboo hairdo isn't a hate crime, then I don't understand anything.

American Idol is my baby. My girl. My boyfriend with the toothy, messed-up grin. Idol is my everything -- and it's certainly better than The Voice, but if it makes you uncomfortable to admit that, we can pretend this sentence never happened. Bottom line: Idol is back with a weird group of strangers, and after their first week of competition, my contestant rankings have shifted like abacus beads tabulating Steven Tyler's age.
In zany news, Ryan Seacrest announced that the lowest male and female vote-getters this week will be offered up to the judges like virgins at a volcano, and it's up to Randy, J-Lo, and Steven to pick which of the losers will leave. Very So You Think You Can Dance! I approve. The gents sang Stevie Wonder classics while the ladies toasted Whitney Houston. Some ruled. Some sucked. Lifeeee.
13. Shannon Magrane, "I Have Nothing"
Oh, honey. You have less than nothing.

Women of the Top 13 mostly overshadow the guys, who tackled Stevie Wonder's songbook.

Whitney Houston was one of a handful of singers whose voice was so inimitable that "American Idol" judges would often discourage contestants from singing her songs.
But the tables were turned Wednesday (March 7), when the ladies of the Top 13 were asked to sing songs from Houston's catalog. Some were up to the task, including Jessica Sanchez, Skylar Laine and Erika Van Pelt, while others — Elise Testone and Shannon Magrane among them — proved why Whitney is often best left untouched.
Guys, meanwhile, dug into the Stevie Wonder songbook, marking the first time Wonder's songs have been used as a theme since the fifth season of "Idol." But it was the girls who stole the show, and the season continues to look like it's leaning in the ladies' direction. "We...

You know what would make American Idol better? Or The Voice? Or X Factor, Project Runway, So You Think You Can Dance, or any reality competition requiring an assessment of talent? If it was acceptable to tell auditioners, "You're very talented, but I'm sorry, you're a loser. Thank you for your time."
Loser. That's a word I need to hear more. Because here's the thing about Idol's eleventh year of pop pageantry and growly Georgia-on-my-Mind-yness: I can't root for contestants who sing well but reek of contrivance, ineptitude, or losery loserness. Pop music is not about operatic supremacy, dammit! It's about flair, self-confidence, nerviness, and maybe not looking like a meek shopper at Forever 21. God! You'd think Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez flew a Craigslist ad seeking "Meek Forever 21 Shoppers Who Would Like 2 B Musical Sens8ions" and cast their loudest inquirers. Did you know every bit of plastic that has ever been created still exists? Well, Lauren Alaina does and she and the rest of the "American Idol" season 10 top 11 finalists want to do something to put a stop to plastic pollution.
So Alaina, along with Scotty McCreery, Haley Reinhart, James Durbin, Jacob Lusk, Casey Abrams, Stefano Langone, Paul McDonald, Pia Toscano, Naima Adedapo and Thia Megia -- reunited recently. Not for another concert, but to inspire fans to refuse disposable plastic -- according to the Plastic Pollution Coalition, the greatest source of plastic pollution on our planet.
The "Idols" ask us to take the 4 R's pledge: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. And since they ask so nicely, well, how can we refuse? Well, we can refuse disposable plastic, but not Scotty and Lauren.
To help spread the word, the season 10 top 11 created a video -- you're seeing it here first at Zap2it for the Ppc.

For some folks, American Idol is a jaunty little TV show that provides a fine distraction every Wednesday and Thursday night from January to May. For others, it’s a 365-day-a-year obsession that’s yielded dozens of album downloads and a terrifying number of iTunes spins that we would rather not begin to count. Since I fall into the latter category, I’m not ashamed to admit that I spend an inordinate amount of time pondering the post-Idol careers of my favorite former contestants — seriously, folks, it’s time you checked out Aloha Misho’s Badd Ep on iTunes,...

Pia Toscano is looking forward to releasing her first single "This Time" on July 12, but fans who are itching to get the first taste of her upcoming debut won't have to wait until next week to listen to the song. She has showcased it live for the first time ever during "American Idol" tour opener on July 6, and footage from the concert hit the web one day after.
Co-written and co-produced by Ester Dean, the song starts with an acoustic guitar and a simple beat. It's about going through a rough break-up and finding her true happiness. "Don't try to stop me with the words you say/ 'cause I'm sick and tired of the game you play/ Gonna bring myself gonna make the change/ And like a butterfly Imma spread my wings," Pia belted out its lyrics.

2011 "American Idol" summer tour has officially been kicked off on July 6. Casey Abrams, Haley Reinhart, Jacob Lusk, James Durbin, Lauren Alaina, Naima Adedapo, Paul McDonald, Pia Toscano, Scotty McCreery, Stefano Langone and Thia Megia made their live performances in front of their fans in the Salt Lake City.
One of the highlights from the Wednesday concert was the live showcase of Pia's debut single "This Time". The rumored girlfriend of Mark Ballas gave concertgoers the first listen to the Ester Dean-written single after Naima finished her solo set with a rendition of Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor".

HollywoodNews.com: Although Jennifer Lopez has not signed on for another season of ‘American Idol,’ former contestants are hoping she comes back.
So far, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson are confirmed for the upcoming season, states MTV. “I love Jennifer Lopez; she’s been nothing but nice to all of us, and backstage, she is as nice as she comes across on TV,” Paul McDonald commented on the up-in-the-air judge.
“I feel like it would be kind of sad if she didn’t come back. I think that’s something we look forward to, just because it was something that we had,” Naima Adedapo said about her hopes.
And Naima isn’t the only one who will be sad as Pia Toscano revealed the same feeling: “I’m gonna miss her if she goes. I think she added so much to the show.”

When Simon Cowell left "American Idol" after nine seasons, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said the show would be taking the nice guy approach: "If you like people being mean to people, you'll miss it."
So, did you miss it, "Idol" fans? The "it" being Cowell, of course.
When Cowell announced he was leaving the Fox reality show, fans and critics were concerned "Idol" couldn't survive without him. In a poll, 55% of Zap2it readers voted that the show would be "terrible" without the British judge and said the show needed him.
One year later, "Idol" proved that it can do just fine without Cowell, thank you very much. In fact, Season 10's finale ratings improved on Season 9's finale, which also acted as Cowell's swan song.
But the question still remains: Does the show need Cowell?

Sometimes I seriously question my obsession with American Idol. After all, there’s no other show on television that consistently causes spikes in my blood pressure — whether it’s from the blind fury I feel toward the show’s inept and inconsistent judging panel, the frustration I experience with its thoroughly uninspired theme nights and song lists, or the rolling rage of wondering things like “Where the frak is Pia Toscano’s finale duet?”
But Wednesday night’s Season 10 finale managed to dilute my cynicism, erase my grouchiness, and bring real human tears to my eyes. Call me a sentimental fool,...

Where is probably the one and only place in the world where you can find Midwestern ladies in prom/bridesmaid dresses, people speaking a wide variety of languages, poster board signs covered in blinking lights, dozens of cowboy hats, and a mish-mash of the oddball celebrities? The American Idol season finale, of course! I was there last night as the show went down at downtown La’s Nokia Theater, and the only way to really describe what was going on is to call it exactly what it was: a crazy spectacle. I’m not exaggerating: Moms were really prowling around in prom/bridesmaid dresses!

Lady GaGa and Beyonce Knowles, who served as guest mentors on a previous separate week of "American Idol", were two of the many musical guests at the finale of the singing competition on May 25. Baby lock them doors and turn the lights down low, because tonight the tenth insane season of "American Idol" is coming to a close.
It’s a cycle that brought us singing cleaning ladies, a scatting jazz freak, a galloping Nashville indie heartthrob, a growling sex kitten piñata, a pyromaniac rocker, a gospel lovin' spa concierge straight out of Compton, and, ultimately, two country fetus finalists who were born after Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" hit stores. With Simon Cowell on to bigger (and better?) projects, all eyes were on two new judges, more concerned with promoting their new singles than giving honest critiques.
Welcome to "American Idol X: Everybody’s Ridiculous (And Beautiful And Perfect!)"
The two hour seven minute finale spectacular kicks off at 8pm Edt, and I’ll be live-blogging every hot mess moment of it! The random cameos! The jaw-dropping group numbers! Randy Jackson’s sure-to-be-absurd outfit!

It must say Something About America. that, after eleventy billion auditions, American Idol.s finalists are two sides of the same country-fried slice of Wonder Bread. Let.s not forget that initially, this was a season that did shake things up a bit.or at least as much as can be expected from a lumbering behemoth of mass entertainment such as this one. We had Naima Adedapo.s crazed dancing fits and reggae rap. We had Casey Abrams.s ferocious underbite and jazzy interludes. We had James .Give Metal a Chance. Durbin wailing next to Zakk Wylde, Ozzy Osbourne.s former guitarist and geriatric nurse. There was some color here! But it seemed all along as if some unseen... More >>...

Good news for Nigel Lythgoe: In the year 2015, when he begins production on his Lifetime original movie Sing It Anyway: The Lauren Alaina Story, he’ll already have a script in place. Oh, sure, Uncle Nigel might take a few creative liberties with the historical record — perhaps Little Lauren will deliver her final American Idol performance in a driving rainstorm, on her way to the airport to stop her future fiancé from getting on a plane, with a pit stop to rescue a pack of kindly grandmothers from a burning bus – but make no mistake: Tuesday’s Season 10 performance-night finale was the carefully crafted,...

Who run the world? Girls!
The ladies of "American Idol" proved it during Wednesday's (May 25) season-closer when they performed a medley of Beyoncé hits, and were joined at the finish by Beyoncé herself.
The girls — Pia Toscano, Karen Rodriguez, Naima Adedapo, Ashthon Jones, Thia Megia and Haley Reinhart — hit the stage in various red-and-black ensembles and shared the stage during B's #1 smash "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." Adedapo opened the song and threw some sass on it before passing the mic to Jones, the season's 13th-place finisher, who was eliminated during the first week of semifinals competition. The girls took their turns with the vocals and aped the familiar moves from the single's iconic video, which one rapper sort-of...

Randy Jackson nicknamed "American Idol" season 10 "The Remix." As the Simon-less cycle starts its final descent, and as teenage country singers Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina compete on TV one last time, it's clear that Randy's premonition was 100% accurate. (At this point I should mention that I think remixes are often endless, repetitive, lazy cash grabs, more about the producer than the original artist.)
At this point, I'd urge everyone to raise your seat backs to their full, upright position. Failure to do so will result in you falling asleep within eight minutes. Unless you're a country fan, this will be the most boring "Idol" finale since Katharine McPhee sat down to sing "Over the Rainbow" for the 900th time.
But wait! What's this? A carefully worded post on TMZ hinting that Lauren Alaina may be too sick to perform and producers are scrambling to reinstate third-placer Haley Reinhart in the eleventh hour?...

We learned last night which American Idol contestants will be advancing to the finals. But what I really want to know is: Who will the Top 13 sing with in the finale? Now, we know every year, the Fox series trots out A-list musical acts (like the rumored Bono; Fox is not commenting on whether or not he will really appear on the season 10 finale) to sing alongside a good number of finalists. So now it’s time to create our wish lists: If every member of the Top 13 were to sing with a superstar, which would you choose for them?...

Thursday night’s installment of American Idol wasn’t so much a results show as it was a series of distinct promotional opportunities. Jennifer Lopez took a break from her grueling work behind the Idol judges’ table to hawk her two latest singles and herald the return of the saggy genie pant. Steven Tyler woke up from his long season’s nap to move a couple copies of his memoir. That horrible British guy who insulted Stefano Langone’s mother’s cooking tried to whip up some buzz for another one of his TV shows that I have no interest in watching.

What a bizarre "American Idol" evening it was! Kisses were bestowed, curses were hurled, tongues were wagged, and — wait, what? — the singers actually took on contemporary tunes rather than ones penned decades before they were born.
It's nice to know that, 10 seasons in, the show can still surprise us. And the contestants too! Haley Reinhart bounced back. James Durbin didn't make us want to flip over to another channel and endure the comparatively less-grating stylings of Guy Fieri on "Minute to Win It." And suddenly the Scotty McCreery love fest came to a close for reasons we still can't comprehend.

Three months ago, if you had told me that "American Idol X: F--- F---" was going to have a theme week about recent music, I would have said, "Yeah, and Katherine Heigl will make a good movie one day." Dancing with the Stars professional Mark Ballas was among the audience members at the American Idol live performance show this week. The dancer, who has been romantically linked to Idol eliminee Pia Toscano, was spotted watching the Top 7 performances on Wednesday night with his father Corky. At one point, host Ryan Seacrest approached him to ask if he had a favorite Idol contestant, to which Ballas said that he is supporting Casey Abrams, prompting Seacrest to joke that he gave a "curveball" answer. After last night's 'Dancing With the Stars' announcement, Pia Toscano has managed to keep her name on the tip of TV writers' tongues for yet another week. The theme on Wednesday's (April 20) "American Idol" top-seven performance night was music from the 21st century, and while James Durbin blew it out with a Muse extravaganza, Jacob Lusk took it down for a touching Luther Vandross tribute and teens Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina played it close to the vest with traditional country tunes.
First up was McCreery, who sang "Swingin' " by LeAnn Rimes, giving it his usual dose of country comfort. Backed by a four-piece horn section, McCreery brought the whole arsenal: the bizarre sideways-mic technique, the George W. Bush-esque facial tics and the "down-home" charm. For the first time this season, though, McCreery's shtick seemed a bit phoned-in and fell a bit flat, lacking his usual appeal.

American Idol history has proven that there’s one place besides the bottom 3 that you don’t want to be: Scheduled in the first slot on performance nights. Viewers with short-term memories are more likely to forget what the first contestant of the night brought to the table. Plus, as an Idol hopeful, it’s difficult to deliver a show-stopping number when the crowd itself is still warming up. But whereas being first in previous seasons merely meant that you had to cope with another contestant getting the spotlight (and, therefore, momentum going into the next week), the disadvantage this...

Sitting through American Idol‘s Top 8 results-show telecast was kind of like going to a modern-day multiplex where your every whim can be satisfied. There was the animated tearjerker about the bright-eyed woodland creature who’d been in captivity too long and yearned to escape to wide open spaces. There was the horror flick about the (sexy) zombie who refused to die. There was the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo-esque thriller about a kick-ass heroine overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles. And there was even a sweet teen romance — or was it supposed to be a brother-and-sister comedy? — with a somewhat muddled marketing campaign.

"American Idol" has a problem. We've all seen it the past several seasons. The female contestants as a group cannot compete with the male contestants. Is it because they are less talented? No.
The main problem is that the voting methods have changed. In the first few seasons of "Idol," the only voting method was to call in. There were no text votes, there was no online voting. Therefore older fans were on a level playing field with younger fans. Let's be honest - older fans do not by and large know how to text or are on Facebook.
