UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has ordered citizens to work from home if possible, made masks mandatory in certain indoor venues and is introducing “Covid passports” as a form of entry.
Delivering a press conference in the last few minutes, Johnson said the dangerous Omicron variant is doubling infections every two-to-three days, while there are at least 568 known cases, although in reality many more.
Johnson has kickstarted “Plan B”, ordering the country to work from home wherever possible and extending the legal requirement for people to wear masks in most public indoor venues including theatres and cinemas.
Responding to recent pressure, Johnson is also introducing a form of “Covid passport”, with people now required to show proof of double vaccination for entry into indoor venues of more than 500 capacity, outdoor venues of more than 4,000 and any venue above 10,000. A negative lateral flow test will also count as proof.

The latest scandal engulfing Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party reached millions of viewers on mainstream TV last night as I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! hosts Ant and Dec poked fun at the Prime Minister’s Christmas party saga.
Johnson is facing difficult questions after footage was leaked of his Press Secretary Allegra Stratton joking with aides about a Christmas party that took place in Downing Street last year, at a time when the country was in a near-lockdown and such parties weren’t allowed.
In a clip introducing a segment after the contestants chose a new “camp leader” in place of David Ginola, Ant joked the contestants “weren’t celebrating,” adding: “They didn’t have a party, they categorically deny any suggestions that they had a party. And this ‘fictional party’ definitely didn’t involve cheese and wine, or a secret Santa.”

Benefits Street star White Dee has signed up to speak at the Conservative Party Conference.
The 47-year-old - also known as Deirdre Kelly - will take part in a Policy Exchange debate about the welfare system with the Department for Work and Pensions, the Daily Mail reports.
The event will be chaired by Newsnight journalist Allegra Stratton and will take place during the conference in Birmingham, which runs from September 28 to October 1.
Kelly's agent Barry Tomes confirmed the appointment, saying: "Dee is very excited. She has lots of ideas about how to improve benefits.
"She agrees that the benefits system is totally abused in the UK. She wants to address how it is so easy to get on them but so hard to get off them. In classic Dee style, she said she won't think about what she wants to say until the actual debate."
Tomes added: "She shoots from the hip,...
