YouTube stalwart Bart Baker’s career has taken a wildly unexpected turn.
Baker, 33, who has amassed 10 million subscribers and 3.3 billion lifetime views on the strength of his irreverent music video parodies of Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber, says he has quit YouTube, Vice reports. Baker has long made known his disdain for the platform in the wake of the Adpocalypse, when many creators saw their ad revenues plummet, and his last YouTube video was posted roughly one year ago.
And now, Baker appears to be eyeing a fresh start out east. As Vice tells it, one day, Baker received a “mysterious email” from a Chinese platform promising to make him a star. Then, after producing only a handful of videos, Baker had amassed millions of followers on the platform, which is called Kwai -- where he livestreams chat and music sessions with his fans.

Is it possible that the biggest competition facing social-media platforms such as Instagram comes from the influencers who use Instagram and other platforms?
That is, if I'm a big-name influencer, and I cut a sponsorship deal with a brand, I'm actually taking money away from the platform where that sponsored video runs. The brand could have just bought ads directly on the platform, but my sponsored video is probably better, probably cheaper, and connects directly with fans in a way that plain old advertising almost never does. Money that comes to me directly is money the platform never sees, and never gets to slice off a share.
What does that mean for the platforms? For one, the platforms have a major incentive to make sponsored posts less prominent, less visible, less lucrative, so that brands will advertise on them directly, and give the platform a cut of the action. And,...

With apologies to Three 6 Mafia and Little Orphan Annie, it’s a hard knock life out there for online influencers, who spend their time pimping videos to millions but increasingly are pinched between intense competition for views and withering scrutiny from brands, platforms and regulators.
On the one hand, perceptions of what it’s like to be an influencer have never been more glamorous. For many teens, becoming a social media influencer is their dream job. Feature films such as Ingrid Goes West and Netflix’s new People You May Know portray a glitzy, carefree life (though with some highly dramatized dark sides).
But the realities are lot more complicated and distinctly unglamorous, especially amid wrenching changes in the industry.
Facebook’s algorithm shift is killing organic reach for most creators, reducing their value to sponsoring brands. At the same time, the Federal Trade Commission is cracking down on disclosures of sponsored videos,...

Each year, What's Trending host Shira Lazar and her partner Bart Baker unveil and discuss the top viral videos of the past 12 months, with data from Tubular Labs serving as their guide. The 2017 edition of that annual tradition is now live, and it is a look back at some of the recent clips that most captivated viewers across YouTube, Facebook, and other video platforms.
Lazar and Baker's breakdown is separated across ten categories. The "Most Watched Facebook Video," for example, came from People Are Awesome, the brand known for its pulse-pounding compilations of incredible stunts. Meanwhile, the adorable short film In A Heartbeat (which Lazar and Baker are watching above), snagged the title "Animated Video Of The Year." Ultimately, Lazar and Baker reveal the most-viewed video of the year. This year, according to Tubular, that achievement belongs to a Latin music video that was inescapable throughout 2017.

BroadbandTV’s latest round of creator signings represents a major coup for the Canada-based multi-channel network. It has inked deals with Yousef 'FouseyTube' Erakat, Bart Baker, and Ethan and Hila Klein -- the husband-and-wife duo behind h3h3Productions.
Erakat, who is primarily renowned for his prank videos and vlogs -- and who counts 20 million followers across social media -- was previously signed to Studio71. Music video parody artist Baker (17.8 million combined social followers) was affiliated with Disney’s Maker Studios, while h3h3Productions -- who have accumulated roughly 8 million combined followers thanks to their comedy and commentary videos -- were formerly working with Complex, according to Variety, which was first to report the signings.

The latest movie within the so-called “influencer film” genre has arrived. Fml, a road trip comedy that stars Viners Jason Nash and Brandon Calvillo as fictionalized versions of their social media personae, is now available for digital download from iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon.
In Fml, Nash and Calvillo come together to travel across the country. Their goal is simple: Create collaborative videos with all of the creators they meet during their journey, while simultaneously ironing out the issues in their personal and professional lives.
Fml contains several of the qualities that have become commonplace within the world of influencer films. For one, its stars are engaging in a form of self-parody that will seem familiar to anyone who checked out Internet Famous. In addition, there will be plenty of cameos from Nash and Calvillo’s colleagues in the online video world, with YouTube star Bart Baker’s turn as...

On October 7th, Vine stars Jason Nash and Brandon Calvillo will embark on a journey, and as with most road trips, they’ll encounter plenty of oddball characters along the way. Nash and Calvillo are the stars of Fml, an “influencer film” that will also feature Bart Baker, Jimmy Tatro, Ry Doon, and several other online video stars.
In Fml, Nash and Calvillo will play friends who look to advance their respective careers by travelling across the country and creating video collaborations with everyone they meet along the way. Both stars will riff on their respective social media careers; Calvillo’s character will be a young and immature teenager, while Nash’s will be far too old to be in his line of work.
Nash and Calvillo won’t be the only Fml cast members engaging in self-satire. Baker, for example, will portray Mike $wagg, a “morally bankrupt” creator whose...
