Ashley Clements’ “Sona” space-drama series — a labor of love that was shot mostly in her L.A. apartment — premieres today on Legendary Digital Networks’ Alpha subscription streaming service.
“Sona” was created by and starring Clements (“Lizzie Bennet Diaries”), directed by Brendan Bradley and produced by Bradley’s Jigsaw Ensemble production company. Legendary’s Alpha, which has exclusive rights to “Sona” for six months, will release new episodes of the eight-part series on a weekly basis each Wednesday. The show is available at watch.sonaseries.com.
Set in a future where aliens are no longer welcome on Earth, the show stars Clements as Lt. Belyn Sona, a United Earth Space Corps officer who’s separated from her alien husband (Bradley) and jettisoned into space in a malfunctioning escape pod. Sona slowly unravels mentally and emotionally through a series of flashbacks as she drifts through space in isolation.

Legendary has made a number of sizable investments in digital media properties, and with its latest move, it has linked up with a company known for its focus on gaming. As first reported by Variety, the prominent studio has invested in 3BlackDot, which describes itself as an “influencer-driven collective.”
3BlackDot, launched in 2013, is well-positioned within YouTube’s gaming community. Its founding team includes a pair of former Machinima employees as well as content creators Tom “Syndicate” Cassell and Adam “SeaNanners” Montoya. With its featured gamers taking center stage, 3BlackDot has rolled out a number of projects, including the mobile game Zombie Killer Squad. It has also sought to improve its partners’ revenue streams through Jetpak, a multi-channel network that touts a creator-friendly approach.
“Standing out as a digital content producer is difficult, but 3BlackDot and its influencer group, Jetpak, truly understand how to create engaged communities,” said Legendary Digital Networks president Adam Rymer.

Hey there kids! Melissa here, back with some more comic-con goodness for you. This one was especially fun for me. Friday afternoon, I headed over to the Nerdist Conival to interview Director David Yarovesky and stars Gabriel Basso, Gabrielle Walsh, Jacob Zachar and Steve Agee about their film The Hive. Shia Labeouf as a giant in a romantic comedy? Variety reports that the Transformers acor is attached to a new quirky love story for David Linde, Tory Metzger and Adam Rymer under newly created banner Lava Bear Films. The film will be directed by Gil Kenan (Monster House) from a script he wrote. Lava Bear will produce along with the Jim Henson Co. and French vfx company Buf. Lisa Henson, Jason Lust and India Osbourne are producing the project, and Pierre Buffin is exec producing.
The project has a working title of "A Giant". The story follows "a girl, broke and running from a series of bad relationships, who moves back home to reconnect with her brother. Instead she forms a relationship with a 20-foot-tall man-child who lives next door, to be played by Labeouf."
A distributor has yet to come on board, but Universal will likely step up with Linde and Labeouf involved.

Shia Labeouf seems to be leaving the franchise game behind in favor of smaller, character-centered dramas. Next year alone will see him in both The Company You Keep and The Wettest County in the World, with Horns still coming down the pipeline. Variety tells us of another project in something of that vein, this one a currently-untitled “quirky love story” from Monster House director Gil Kenan. Lava Bear Films — overseen by David Linde, Tory Metzger, and Adam Rymer — will make it their inaugural film, and The Jim Henson Co. will also produce.
The project, going under the working title of A Giant, is centered on “a girl, broke and running from a series of bad relationships, who moves back home to reconnect with her brother.” In lieu of her sibling, she ends up bonding with Labeouf‘s “20-foot-tall man-child who lives next door,” and this is presumably where the romantic elements come in.
