Sandra Oh made the trip to the DGA for Deadline’s Emmy Contenders event to talk about her new series, BBC America’s Killing Eve, which marks her first series regular role after spending 10 seasons as Dr. Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy.
“Immediately what struck me was the tone and Phoebe’s [Waller-Bridge, creator] unique and fresh voice. She was exploring the genre of thriller in a completely unique way,” Oh shared. “Also, the fact that is was a psychological thriller drama with an intense dance between these two characters of Eve and Villanelle, it was just so juicy.”
“The show gives a beautiful account of each character in a completely rounded way,” Oh added.
Based on the novels by Luke Jennings, the series centers on two women; Eve, a security services operative who fantasies about being a spy, and Villanelle (Jodie Comer), a talented killer who clings to the luxuries her violent job affords her.

“Killing Eve” could make a killing at the Emmys — specifically in Best Drama Actress. The BBC America series has two leading ladies, Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, and if they both get shortlisted, the category would feature two co-stars for the first time in 16 years.
The last time a show double-dipped in Best Drama Actress was “Six Feet Under” in 2002, when Frances Conroy and Rachel Griffiths lost to Allison Janney (“The West Wing”). For the three years before that, “The Sopranos” stars Edie Falco and Lorraine Bracco faced off, with the former winning twice. The ‘90s had two more co-star pairings in 1997 (“ER”’s Julianna Margulies and Sherry Stringfield) and 1994.
Drama actress co-star nominees occurred with regularity in the ‘80s, thanks to “Cagney & Lacey” (Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless) and “L.A. Law” (Susan Dey and Jill Eikenberry). “Dallas” (Barbara Bel Geddes and Linda Gray), “Hill Street Blues” (Barbara Babcock...

Endeavor Content has sealed one of the most significant drama deals of this year’s MipTV, selling the Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Sandra Oh series “Killing Eve” to pay-tv giant Canal+ in France. The female-led espionage thriller has been one of the buzzed-about programs at this year’s market in Cannes.
The Sid Gentle Films-produced eight-parter stars Oh as a bored Mi-5 operative who becomes entangled in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with Villanelle, a brilliant female assassin played by Jodie Comer. It is based on the Luke Jennings novellas, written by “Fleabag” scribe and actor Waller-Bridge, and commissioned by BBC America.
The series bowed Sunday on BBC America, and the AMC Networks- and BBC Studios-owned cable network has already renewed it for a second season.

Don't spend time worrying that the Killing Eve TV show will be cancelled by BBC America too soon. The cable network already renewed it for a second season, prior to the TV series' premiere. Still, the ratings in this first season will influence whether Killing Eve is cancelled or renewed beyond season two, so stay tuned. A BBC America thriller, based on Luke Jennings' Villanelle novel series, Killing Eve stars Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, Fiona Shaw, Kirby Howell- Baptiste, Kim Bodnia, David Haig, Darren Boyd, Sean Delaney, and Owen McDonnell. The story centers on MI5 security officer Eve Polastri (Oh) and Villanelle (Comer), a capricious yet capable killer. Essentially a desk jockey, Eve yearns for the more challenging life of a spy. After she starts tracking a new, female assassin, their paths cross, and a game of cat-and-mouse ensues.

Broadcasters cannot ignore the public appetite for more nuanced dramas, says Killing Eve creator.
The TV industry “can no longer get away with not having the conversation” about the issues raised by the #MeToo movement, according to Fleabag and Killing Eve writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Killing Eve creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge says the entertainment industry has “woken the fxxk up” with regards to the #metoo movement and are exploring more female-focused stories as a result.
Waller-Bridge, who is in Cannes to promote the drama alongside Grey’s Anatomy’s Sandra Oh and Doctor Foster’s Jodie Comer, said, “I think people have woken the fxxk up and they can’t get away without having the conversation anymore. There’s a huge appetite and a need for these stories to be told and they are coming to the surface. They are becoming more specific and nuanced and people are open to hearing those stories. It’s not like people haven’t been writing these stories for ages. It feels like Killing Eve is a really great example of that embrace.”

Sandra Oh picked the perfect role for her full-time return to television.
As Eve Polastri, Oh is portraying an MI5 employee works on the boring side of the business but desperately wants to find herself thrilled and chilled by the work instead.
When Eve gets caught up in a case that she feels she can solve and sets out to prove it on Killing Eve Season 1 Episode 1, she has no idea it's one of MI5's hottest.
Killing Eve is from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who is also responsible for Fleabag, a series Nothing like this one, but available on Amazon. Killing Eve is based on a series of novellas from Luke Jennings, which might be why the shows feel so different, but I can still feel Waller-Bridge's touch on the show.

You’ve seen a hundred shows like “Killing Eve,” and yet you’ve never seen anything quite like it. Using the same structure, same character types, and same motivational twists as the male-centric thrillers dominating spy stories for decades, the new BBC America series can, at times, feel overly familiar. When Sandra Oh’s MI5 agent swears personal vengeance against a mysterious assassin known as Villanelle (Jodie Comer), it’s a bit on the nose. We’ve heard too many men say her line — “I want to kill her with my bare hands” — for it to shake us… and yet, Oh does just that. It’s her conviction, enthusiasm, and all-around excitement over being there, in that moment, that elevates the scene beyond a platitude.
Any marked familiarities aren’t part of the problem, they‘re part of the point. “Fleabag” creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge wholeheartedly embraces the clichés of her...

“It’s great to be back working.”
Sandra Oh is hardly a stranger to television, but it’s been nearly four years since she exited “Grey’s Anatomy” after a 10-year run as the indelible Dr. Cristina Yang. She’s had a few roles since, including a memorable turn on Season 3 of ABC’s “American Crime,” but her latest effort — as the titular character in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s darkly comic thriller “Killing Eve” on BBC America — marks her return to the medium she loves.
Oh stars as Eve Polastri, a low-level bureaucrat in British intelligence’s Mi-5 who becomes fixated on a serial killer (Jodie Comer), who’s been casting a path of destruction throughout Europe. Their cat-and-mouse chase is unlike most espionage thrillers — stylish, deadly, and yet with a distinct, twisted sense of humor fans will recognize from “Fleabag.”

The opening scene of BBC America’s new drama “Killing Eve” tells us everything we need to know for the rest of the season: that when it comes to Villanelle (Jodie Comer), the stylish and quirky assassin at the show’s center, expect the unexpected.
“Killing Eve,” adapted by showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge from Luke Jennings’ “Villanelle” novels, opens in a Viennese cafe with Villanelle peacefully eating ice cream (don’t worry, this isn’t a spoiler. It’s in the trailer, too). The cafe is pretty empty, except for a young girl with her mother. The two make eye contact, and Villanelle smirks at the child. On her way out, she knocks the little girl’s ice cream into her lap and keeps on walking.
Clearly this is not your average woman in her 20s.

“What that scene sets up is, like, the unexpected,” Comer told TheWrap in a recent interview. In fact, the entire show turns the spy vs. spy narrative on its head.
“I think the show is just full of the unexpected. It’s the last thing you expect Villanelle to do, is throw the ice cream on her, but she does,” the British actress continued. “I think what that scene sets up is you can see this person is, you know, they are totally their own person. They do what they want to do, and … without any consequences.”
Terrorizing a young girl for fun also gives us a glimpse into Villanelle’s head, and basically tells us everything we need to know about the assassin and psychopath. Even when she’s not killing, she’ll do whatever she feels like doing, whether or not someone else gets hurt. Villanelle seems to enjoy killing so much so that even her handler Konstantin (Kim Bodnia) starts to get concerned.

“Villanelle, you know, she has no remorse,” Comer said. “She does what she wants to do. She has her own rules.”
Comer said that one of Waller-Bridge’s goals was to avoid stereotypes, and to bring some levity to a show about, well, murder.
“The one thing that Phoebe had always said was that she didn’t want a heaviness,” Comer said. “These characters — especially Villanelle — goes against the stereotype. And Phoebe didn’t want Villanelle to always be so serious, and you know, kind of constrained … sometimes there would be like a line or a facial expression that would just totally flip the scene on its head.”

Comer added that “a lot of dramas right now are quite heavy, the material is quite dark,” but Villanelle “has that special little quirk that .. sets it off from the rest.”

Just ahead of its Sunday premiere, BBC America has given an early second season renewal to its critically praised drama series Killing Eve, from Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Starring Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy) and Jodie Comer (The White Princess) and based on the novellas by Luke Jennings, Killing Eve centers on two women; Eve (Oh) is a bored, whip-smart, pay-grade security services operative whose desk-bound job doesn’t fulfill her fantasies of being a spy. Villanelle (Comer) is an elegant, talented killer who clings to the luxuries her violent job affords her. These two fiercely intelligent women, equally obsessed with each other, go head to head in an epic game of cat and mouse.

Eve Polastri may be brilliant, but 007 she is not.
“She’s not trained to within an inch of her life — she can’t do a backflip, pull out a gun and shoot three people with one bullet,” says Phoebe Waller-Bridge about the central character in her new BBC America thriller “Killing Eve,” which bows April 8.
“She’s a woman who is out there protecting people and hunting somebody, but when there’s a bang in her house, she runs upstairs and hides. There is something much more human and relatable about that.”
But what truly sets “Killing Eve” apart from the rest of the well-worn spy genre is that the cat and mouse at the center of the story are both women.

Endeavor Content has racked up international sales on “Killing Eve,” the Phoebe Waller-Bridge spy drama starring Sandra Oh (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and Jodie Comer (“Thirteen”).
The BBC has already acquired the buzzy series for the U.K. ahead of its U.S. bow on BBC America this coming Sunday. The latest pre-sales include to HBO Europe, which has taken it for Central and Eastern Europe, Iberia, and Scandinavia. Other early buyers include Israeli pay-tv platform Hot and Kiwi pubcaster Tvnz.
The eight-part series was produced by the U.K.’s Sid Gentle Films and is based on the Luke Jennings novellas. It follows a bored M15 operative (Oh) who is assigned to tracking a prolific and enigmatic female assassin, Villanelle (Comer). “Fleabag” writer and star Waller-Bridge has infused the series, which was shot across Europe, with her trademark dark humor, alongside the usual action and intrigue elements of a cat-and-mouse spy drama.

With a body count that easily reaches double digits, it might sound strange to describe BBC America’s new crime drama Killing Eve as “fun.” But dammit, it is fun — an addictive and surprisingly witty thriller powered by two remarkable female performances, and a welcome counterbalance to dour, moody British crime dramas like Luther and The Fall. (Who says you can’t solve murders and have a laugh, huh?)

BBC America’s “Killing Eve” has been selected for this year’s first-ever Canneseries TV festival competition — making it the only U.S. show in a field of ten international productions. “Killing Eve” will be up for one of six awards handed out on April 11, along side new series from Belgium, Germany, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Norway, South Korea, and Spain.
The ten shows will be vying for Best Music, Best Screenplay, Special Performance Prize, Best Performance and Best Series trophies.
As previously announced, author and producer Harlan Coben has been named jury president for the competition, which takes place April 7 to 11. The U.S.-based Coben will be joined on the panel by actress Paula Beer (Germany), screenwriter and director Audrey Fouché (France), actress Melisa Sözen (Turkey), composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer (Chile/Canada) and actor Michael K. We've loved Sandra Oh ever since she first appeared on Grey's Anatomy as Cristina Yang.
While we never thought the medical drama would go on long without much of the original cast members, it has defied expectations. It's the most resilient show on all of television.
When news broke that Sandra would appear in BBC America's Killing Eve, it felt like our prayers had been answered.
The series follows Oh's Eve, who is hard at work on the trail of a serial killer named Villanelle. Jodie Comer plays the villain.
"These two women, equally obsessed with each other, go head to head in an epic game of cat and mouse,” reads the network description.
The first teaser alone shows the pair going toe-to-toe with one another and we do not want to be within 1000 miles of Villanelle.
She's so evil that she lobs ice cream over a kid in a restaurant.

Sandra Oh‘s not playing a doctor anymore… but she’s still dealing with a lot of blood.
The Grey’s Anatomy alum stars in BBC America’s upcoming spy thriller Killing Eve, and in the new first-look teaser posted above, we see Oh’s MI5 security officer Eve hot on the trail of coldblooded killer Villanelle, played by The White Princess‘ Jodie Comer. “These two women, equally obsessed with each other, go head to head in an epic game of cat and mouse,” per the network description.

‘Killing Eve’ Teaser: Sandra Oh Gets Inside the Mind of a Murderer in Thriller from ‘Fleabag’ Writer
What kind of monster wastes perfectly good ice cream? Apparently, a contract killer who doesn’t appreciate it when people call her a psychopath. That’s probably not the biggest takeaway from this first teaser for “Killing Eve,” the latest BBC America series, but it’s a pretty clear way to show that Villanelle (Jodie Comer) means business.
Aside from the dessert shop table flipping, Sandra Oh stars as Eve, an Mi-5 officer whose desire to work outside the confines of her security job brings her on Villanelle’s trail. A weaponized hairpiece and some shattered phone booth glass later, it looks like they’ll eventually meet up. But how? Where? Why?
One person with all the answers is writer (and “Fleabag” star) Phoebe Waller-Bridge, whose eight-episode script adapts Luke Jennings’ “Codename Villanelle” series of novels. In addition to Oh and Comer, the series co-stars Fiona Shaw, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, David Haig,...

Sandra Oh is known for portraying an unbreakable friendship between Cristina Yang and Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) on “Grey’s Anatomy,” but in her first starring TV role since the ABC series, it appears that her relationships will be a little darker. In the first trailer for BBC America’s “Killing Eve,” Oh and co-star Jodie Comer play a game of cat and mouse as they are both weirdly obsessed with the other. Oh plays titular character Eve, a bored MI5 security officer whose desk job isn’t cutting it. Comer plays Villanelle, a mercurial killer. Based on the novellas by Luke Jennings of the...

When Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge was brought on as writer, showrunner and Ep of BBC America’s Killing Eve, it was a sign of the changing times, star Sandra Oh said at TCA on Friday. The show, based on novellas by Luke Jennings, features Oh as Eve, a woman tasked with hunting down psychopathic killer Villanell (Jodie Comer). “This is the change that we're talking about,” Oh said of Bridge’s appointment to the show. “Here’s a young person who has a creative voice…...

Killing Eve may well be the one show to watch in 2018.
It stars Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy) and Jodie Comer (The White Princess).
In short, the show will have one of the most talented casts around, but what's it about?
The series focuses on Eve, an Mi-5 officer who is less than enthused about the trajectory her life has taken.
She may have the money, but she most certainly does not have the happiness. Her ultimate career goal is to become a spy, but will she ever get there?
Enter Villanelle, a merciless killer who loves the fact that her job comes with a lot of benefits.
Eve is tasked with hunting down Villanelle, but there are a lot of twists in the tale, and the two women's game of cat-and-mouse will find them racing across Europe.
Which one of them will come out on top?

Sandra Oh, my!
BBC America has set a premiere date for the cat-and-mouse thriller Killing Eve, and the first photos suggest that the Grey’s Anatomy grad is the squeaky half of that equation.
VIDEOSDoctor Who: Jodie Whittaker Makes Her Debut as Time Lord
Premiering Sunday, April 8 at 8/7c and adapted by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) from Luke Jennings’ novellas, Killing Eve centers on two women: Eve, a bored, whip-smart, pay-grade MI5 officer whose desk job doesn’t fulfill her fantasies of being a spy, and Villanelle (The White Princess‘ Jodie Comer), a mercurial, talented killer who clings to the luxuries her violent job affords her.
