The Girls on the Bus stars Melissa Benoist, Carla Gugino, Christina Elmore, and Natasha Behnam in the lead roles with Brandon Scott, Griffin Dunne, Hettienne Park, Mark Consuelos, Scott Cohen, Kyle Vincent Terry, and P.J. Back in 2009, a horror film called Orphan told us the story of a married couple who adopts a 9-year-old Russian girl only to discover that she’s actually a criminal adult passing herself off as a child. The film was loosely based on the true story of Barbora Skrlova, a 30-something woman who pretended to be a 13-year-old and did some very twisted things that were very different than what we saw in Orphan. In 2012, a sad case that made it into news reports reminded people of Orphan. It was the story of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born girl with dwarfism who was adopted by American parents who began to suspect she was much older than records said she was. The Grace case has been covered on Dr. Phil and the docu-series The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, and now the Hulu streaming service is moving forward with a Natalia Grace-inspired...

There is a very good mix of theatrical, digital, VOD and hybrid releases this weekend starting with The Kid Detective from Stage 6 Films starring Adam Brody and Sophie Nélisse.
Written and directed by Evan Morgan, the movie is about exactly what the title suggests: a kid detective. Brody plays a once-celebrated kid detective who is now 31 and isn’t exactly bathing in fame. However, he continues to solve the same trivial mysteries as he navigates his hangovers and wades in puddles of self-pity. All of this changes when a naïve client brings him his first “adult” case in which he attempts to find out who brutally murdered her boyfriend. The film also stars Sarah Sutherland, Tzi Ma, Wendy Crewson, Jonathan Whittaker and Peter MacNeill.

Don’t be fooled by the cheery ring of the Disney-esque title “The Kid Detective.” Severely misrepresenting the mature essence of writer and first-time director Evan Morgan’s smart crime caper, this innocent-sounding name might just be the result of poor creative judgment. Then again, it might also be purposely designed to pull the rug out from under the viewer, much as Morgan’s ambitious genre exercise often does to satisfying effect.
In short, you won’t find something as young-skewing as “Harriet the Spy” or “Encyclopedia Brown” here, as “The Kid Detective” has much darker ambitions in store. Splendidly summoning film noir-esque vibes, classically ghastly bad guys and femme fatale types out of a whimsical small town full of grotesque mysteries, this bold and often surprisingly humorous film — think of it as a more mainstream version of Rian Johnson’s “Brick” — grapples with themes related to murder and abuse,...

"Someone's following us." "This isn't safe." Sony Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie dark comedy titled The Kid Detective, marking the feature debut of Canadian filmmaker Evan Morgan. A once-celebrated kid detective, now 32, continues to solve the same trivial mysteries between hangovers and bout of self-pity. Until a naïve client brings him his first "adult" case - to figure out who brutally murdered her boyfriend. This just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, and is out in theaters already later this week. Adam Brody stars as Abe, with Sophie Nélisse, Tzi Ma, Wendy Crewson, and Sarah Sutherland. This reminds me a bit of Derrick Comedy's Mystery Team film from over a decade ago, also about some "kid detectives" who get in over-their-heads. I just hope this is funnier than the trailer? Because it's a bit bland. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Evan Morgan's The Kid Detective,...

Sony Pictures has moved Milla Jovovich’s fantasy thriller “Monster Hunter” forward by four months from April 23, 2021, to Dec. 30 of this year.
The studio announced the shift late Monday afternoon. It’s the latest in a long line of major studio movies to be shuffled amid uncertainty over when most North American movie theaters will re-open, although most of the moves have been delays such as the James Bond movie “No Time to Die” going back five months from Nov. 20 to April 2, 2021.
“Monster Hunter,” written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, is loosely based on the Capcom video game series of the same name. The film also stars Tony Jaa, T.I., Ron Perlman, Meagan Good and Diego Boneta. Sony had been planning to open “Escape Room 2” on that date, but the sequel has been delayed to an undisclosed opening in 2021.

Anxiety is high at the start of Jesse Noah Klein’s Like a House on Fire. We hear Dara (Sarah Sutherland) breathing heavily in the bathroom of a train car before finding her seat. From there it’s a taxi and the not so confident stroll to a house’s front door—the laughter of a child behind its barrier stopping her in her tracks and forcing her to run across the street and hide as her breathing grows heavier yet again. She lowers herself even further once Danny (Jared Abrahamson) and little Isabel (Margaux Vaillancourt) exit on their way to daycare. Only after some distance is created between them does Dara dare follow and wait for him to inevitably turn around and spark a confrontation two years in the making.

The premise behind Evan Morgan’s The Kid Detective definitely hit upon my nostalgia as a big fan of the HBO Encyclopedia Brown series when I was a kid. You do wonder what might happen to someone like that as they grow older. Do they become cynical? Depressed? Do they become actual private detectives or go into the police force? A real-world Encyclopedia Brown would have to face the reality that what they thought they were doing was never actually what it was. Being the cute kid to whom the mayor gives a key to the city and the town pitches in to rent office space isn’t the same as being a qualified law enforcement official citizens can rely on. Public celebrity doesn’t garner public trust.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and HBO’s Veep came into the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards looking like a front-running candidate to make history but in the end the Academy voters elected to go in a different direction by making Fleabag the victor.
Veep and Louis-Dreyfus were shockingly shut-out in favor of a scruffy newcomer with populist charms: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the executive producer, creator, writer and star of Fleabag, was the unexpected winner in the category of best actress in a comedy series, which denied Louis-Dreyfus a chance to make history as the first performer to win nine Emmys.
Louis-Dreyfus instead remains tied with Cloris Leachman for the most career Emmy wins (eight) by any performer. Fleabag also won the prize for best comedy and Waller-Bridge grabbed a third statuette for best writing, which left Veep looking like a latter-day Walter Mondale.

Before cameras start rolling, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is in tears. It’s around 8:30 a.m. on December 18, 2018 — the final day of shooting for HBO’s Emmy-winning political satire, “Veep” — and the team led by showrunner David Mandel has already run through rehearsals and made some last-minute tweaks to the script. The early morning run-through was what sent Louis-Dreyfus, the series’ star and executive producer, back to hair and makeup for touch-ups, but now it’s time: the beginning of the end.
“A lot of emotions today,” producer and writer Frank Rich says, standing in the writers’ offices at Paramount Studios. Morgan Sackett, a fellow producer, writer, and episode director, walks up and the pair briefly reminiscence over what brought them here, to this day and this ending: Finding a fitting end to “Veep” was hard enough, but after breaking the final season during summer 2017, the writers were informed of Louis-Dreyfus’ cancer diagnosis.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Veep” Season 7, Episode 7, “Veep” — the series finale.]
In the end, President Selina Meyer did the impossible. It wasn’t that the power-hungry politician managed to recapture the White House (for one unsuccessful term), but how she managed to wreak more havoc than Drogon in doing so. In the final season, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ ex-vp showed her true colors, eviscerating everything and everyone around her; just when it felt like even Selina wouldn’t stoop that low, she found a new bottom — again and again again… until Gary.
Poignant yet unflinching, hilarious and heartbreaking, the series finale of “Veep,” written and directed by David Mandel, sees Armando Iannucci’s original intent through to the bitter end: The American political system is a bloody mess made bloodier by the self-serving “public servants” at its center. Years of roasting them over a spit has only appeared to make them stronger, but the intent of such vicious satire is change rather than...

Prior to Season 7, “Veep” dealt with Donald Trump offscreen instead of dealing with him onscreen. Executive producers David Mandel and Julia Louis-Dreyfus fielded repeated questions about how the 2016 election’s unexpected results would affect the political satire, and they repeatedly said, in short, it wouldn’t. It couldn’t. Not yet.
But now it can. This is the first season written after Trump was elected president, and the third episode of the season drills home one of “Veep’s” most prominent points about America under his tenure: Politicians may be awful, but the people are to blame.
It’s a pivotal choice and turning point for a series that’s always skewered our nation’s leaders before its citizens, so let’s look at the framing of “Pledge.” Directed by Morgan Sackett and written by Rachel Axler (both “Veep” veterans since Mandel’s team took over in 2016), the episode opens...

We don't have to wonder whether the Veep TV show will be cancelled or renewed for season eight. HBO confirmed that the series would end with season seven, way back in September of 2017. Since that time, production on the seventh and final season was delayed while star Julia Louis-Dreyfus sought treatment for breast cancer. Now she and the comedy have returned for a victory lap. Although this is the last installment, we're still tracking the ratings, so stay tuned to see if Selina Meyer goes out on a high note.

Hooray for the return of “Veep” tonight, but why does it have to be the final season? “Veep” is the brainchild of British writer, Armando Iannucci, who had previously created the hit BBC political satire, “The Thick of It.” As the first few seasons aired, Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) became the first woman Vice President of the United States as she navigates holding a pivotal but largely ceremonial position and her attempts to stay relevant. Selina braves the many cedars of Iowa in Veep's season 7 premiere.
This Veep review contains spoilers.
Veep: Season 7 Episode 1
Veep season 7 episode 1, "Iowa," establishes the kind of campaign Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) will be running on her fight back to the top spot in Washington. The former president and probable presidential hopeful is flying in to meet the people who will put her in the oval office. Amy Brookheimer (Anna Chlumsky) and Dan Eagan (Reid Scott) have them all assembled on the tarmac at the Cedar Rapids airport. Selina deplanes to empty space at Cedar Falls. Nothing taxis in to Cedar Rapids. The big moment is blown because of the overabundance of cedars in Iowa, the state which chooses who runs. The screw-up defines the season, the staff, its boss and somehow the American way. The team hit the road promising a “New. Selina. Now" and got back the same old Selina,...

Once upon a time, “Veep” was cathartic. When it premiered in 2012, it made the nasty subtext of government clashes, usually relegated to back chambers and Cspan, excoriating text. It decoded the grim smiles of politicians in the most cynical way possible, laying bare the ways in which they can twist the system in order to fit their most basic, selfish needs. Running for office and maintaining power, “Veep” insisted at every turn, require inflated egos and incredible ruthlessness, just as the rest of us plebes may have always suspected.
But its final season is bowing in 2019, three years after Donald Trump became a leading force in politics and blew the conventions of political theater wide open. The time-honored tradition of passive aggression couldn’t win out over his extreme aggression towards everyone and everything that stood in his way, and so here we are in this grave new world of overt hostility.

Selina Meyer wants her old job back, as Veep cuts the stumps for Season 7.
This is a spoiler-free Veep review.
In Veep Season 7, Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is once again on the road to finish the work she began during her short term as the leader of the free world. Selina finished out the Meyer years, or more accurately the Meyer year, as the 43rd most effective president, right ahead of Buchanan, in American history.
Veep Season 6 ended with her going on a "feeling" tour, where she could be with the real folks out there to "feel their feelings and hear their speakings." Rightly or wrongly taking the pulse of the nation, Meyer decided to run again for president, against the advice of her staff and the wishes of her family. Her daughter Catherine (Sarah Sutherland), now married to Selina's former secret service body double Marjorie (Clea DuVall), had an...

Julia Luis-Dreyfus’ Selina Meyer takes one last shot at the presidency in the new trailer for the final season of Veep.

We’re still a year away from the craziest part of the actual presidential election campaign, but leave it to Selina Meyer to kick things off as only she can.
When last “Veep” left off, the HBO series hinted that the former President might be trying to find a way back into the highest office, courtesy of a constitutional loophole. Even though her stalwart assistant Gary (Tony Hale) is in tow as usual, she’ll face the unlikeliest of foes, as Jonah Ryan (Timothy Simons) stands opposite her in the race.
Of course Jonah is incapable of kissing a baby properly and eating a corn dog like a regular human being. This trailer also hints that the open questions of Selina’s daughter Catherine’s (Sarah Sutherland) new child and the ongoing attempt to craft a tell-all memoir are each going to figure into these upcoming final “Veep” episodes.

Veep’s Selina Meyer has a special Presidents Day message to America, though maybe she just means “real Americans,” and she certainly hasn’t figured out just who that would be.
In a new trailer for the seventh and final season of HBO’s Veep, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Selina manages to insult her fellow Americans – “the entire country is getting more disgusting by the second” – while at the same time courting votes.
Check out the trailer above.
And in a special Presidents Day introduction tweeted today along with the new trailer – see that one below – Selina is a bit more sweet-tempered. Hardly believable, but still.
Taken together, the tweet and the trailer are as fine a Presidents Day gift as anyone’s likely to receive today – if only for the instant-classic Veep line delivered by the incomparable Louis-Dreyfus. When her Selina is told that internal feedback indicates that at least...

Many awards pundits see the Writers Guild as a bellwether for the Oscars, though there’s a catch: oftentimes the Oscar nominees are not eligible at the guild because they aren’t written under its strict guidelines. Thus, Oscar nominee “The Favourite” was not eligible at WGA as this foreign production did not go through the lengthy process of proving its eligibility.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Mandel lifted the lid on the final season of Veep – calling it the “right ending for America” as well as joking about potential spin-offs.
The pair discussed the final seven episodes of the HBO comedy. Louis-Dreyfus, speaking to TCA via videotape from Austria, said that her character Selina Meyer is “truer to herself by the time the season ends”. She added that she was “wasn’t sure evolution is her game” about the former Vice President and President, who is looking to get back to the Oval Office. “I would also add that where our show ends up is a place I’m very happy about.”
“It’s the right ending for America,” added Mandel.
The Seinfeld writer, who joined as showrunner for season five, also joked to Deadline about the possibility of doing any spin-offs, and whether they had five different ideas ala Game of Thrones.

The great Julia Louis-Dreyfus will be celebrating her 58th birthday on January 13th, 2019. The trailblazing actress has made a career of playing amazing comedic characters for nearly four decades. “Veep” is the brainchild of British writer, Armando Iannucci, who had previously created the hit BBC political satire, “The Thick of It.” It centers around Selina Meyer (Louis-Dreyfus), the first woman to hold the office of Vice President of the United States, as she navigates holding a pivotal but largely ceremonial position and her attempts to stay relevant. Meyer was previously a senator who had launched her own presidential bid which initially caught steam but eventually flamed out and was forced to take the number two spot on the party’s ticket. The HBO comedy “Barry” is having a great day. First it reaped three Golden Globe nominations and then it earned another three bids at the Writers Guild of America Awards. At the WGA, it competes for Best Comedy Series writing as well as for an individual episode and for the catch-all Best New Series award.
For the comedy series award, “Barry” faces off against reigning Emmy champ “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as well as “Atlanta,” “Glow” and “The Good Place.” “Barry” is the only comedy up for the new series award alongside the dramas “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Homecoming,” “Pose” and “Succession.”
Of those four, only “Succession” made it into Best Drama Series where it competes against the final season of “The Americans,” season 4 of “Better Call Saul” and the sophomore editions of “The Crown” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
The WGA Awards winners will be revealed on Feb.

Congratulations to the cast of “Veep,” receiving the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series at tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. Receiving the award were stars Dan Bakkedahl, Anna Chlumsky, Gary Cole, Margaret Colin, Kevin Dunn, Clea Duvall, Nelson Franklin, Tony Hale, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sam Richardson, Paul Scheer, Reid Scott, Timothy Simons, Sarah Sutherland, and Matt Walsh.
This year, the category featured no shortage of returning veterans along with one scrappy newcomer. This year marked “Black-ish’s” second nomination and “Veep’s” fifth, while “Curb” (returning after several years of hiatus) racked up its third recognition.
Coming into this year’s awards, “Orange is the New Black” might have been the supposed favorite, since the Netflix prison series has won for the last three years (notably, this is one of the few awards ceremonies where the comedy-drama hybrid competes in the comedy category as opposed to drama,...
