The Advanced Imaging Society announced its 2024 Lumiere Award winners on Friday, with Oscars frontrunners “Oppenheimer” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” among the honorees.
This year’s Lumiere Awards celebrated “Masters and Magic,” according to a press release from the Advanced Imaging Society, and recognized “distinguished directors and professionals in film, television, and emerging media” as “voted for by members of the Hollywood creative and technology community.”
“Our awards have humorously been called the Oscars for geeks,” said Jim Chabin, the president of the Advanced Imaging Society, in a statement. “In 2023, amidst the industry’s chaos, we witnessed the culmination of years of dedication and sudden bursts of creativity. That work is so important to all of us who love film and television. The Lumiere winners of this year have notably expanded the boundaries of technology in filmmaking, enriching storytelling in remarkable ways.”

A column chronicling events and conversations on the awards circuit.
I always have begun this column with the above line that it is all about “events and conversations on the awards circuit”, but sadly in the past two years the great percentage of those “events and conversations” have moved online into the virtual universe. It’s how we learned to keep the awards machine going, and the industry chugging along, inside a global pandemic that just never seemed to stop.
However, Sunday night we had a SAG awards show that seemed, well, like a SAG awards show again, and this weekend we return to the tent on the beach for an Indie Spirit awards that hopes to spark memories of the way were in early 2020, the last time it took place on the sand.
We also have live Art Directors Guild and Ace Eddie Awards ceremonies on Saturday. Q&As...

Guillermo del Toro needs to make more room in his trophy room. The Oscar-winning filmmaker will receive the Advanced Imaging Society’s Inaugural Gene Kelly Award next month.
The honor will be presented during the 12th annual Ais Lumiere Awards luncheon on March 4 at the Beverly Hilton.
“Many of us think of Gene Kelly as the legendary actor and dancer,” Ais president Jim Chabin said. “But he was as powerful a creative force behind the camera as he was in front. His bold innovations with the use of the camera, lighting, music, choreography and animation changed the course of film history and left us with a legacy of sheer motion picture magic. Guillermo del Toro fully embodies this same pioneering spirit, and we are thrilled he will be our first recipient.”

The Society will honor McKay at the 12th annual awards ceremony, which will now take place as a luncheon planned for March 4 at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
“Considering the incredible obstacles our creative community has worked through to create their brilliant stories in the last year, we knew we needed to find a way to present these awards but to do so in a very safe way,” said Jim Chabin, president of Ais. “We remain flexible and are confident and committed to creatively getting that done on March 4th.”
McKay’s credits include “Vice,” “The Big Short” and “Don’t Look Up,” which follows two low-level astronomers played by Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio who go on a giant media tour to warn about an approaching comet that will destroy Earth.

When the relatively new Lumiere Awards were bestowed in Hollywood last week by the Advanced Imaging Society to reward the best hi-tech wizardry in entertainment media, the ceremony was so slick and relevant that I couldn’t help noticing — uh, oh — it felt a bit Oscar-y and Emmy-ish. That’s ironic.
That’s because the society was founded 10 years ago to do what the film and TV academies of arts and sciences refused to do – take the sciences part of their job seriously. I wonder: Why do the Oscars have four acting categories, but no award for Best Use of Hdr (High Dynamic Range) in a Film? The Lumieres have three Hdr film categories (and more for TV), including one for foreign films that was just won by Oscars frontrunner “Roma.”
