Jenna Fischer put her acting skills to the test on the set of 2024’s Mean Girls. The actress revealed this week she filmed the movie with a broken shoulder.
“I shot for one day on Mean Girls, and then I didn’t have to shoot for a month,” Fischer told People. “And in that month I went on a ski trip and I fell on a sidewalk and I broke my shoulder. So I had to shoot the rest of the movie with a very newly broken shoulder.”
Fischer played Ms. Heron, the daughter of protagonist Cady (Angourie Rice) in the musical movie. After she returned with her arm in a sling, the actress said the crew got creative in accommodating the injury.
“If you notice in the movie, I am exclusively gesturing with my left arm,” she said. “It was the wildest experience. So a big part of my...

A joke from Mean Girls which Lindsay Lohan pushed back against seems to be missing from at-home versions of the film released last week.
The movie musical version of the film, which began as Tina Fey’s beloved 2004 movie starring Lohan and then went to Broadway before making its way back to the screen this year, became available on digital platforms last week after its theatrical debut in January.
The film, which opened 2024 with a bang at the box office, featured a cameo from Megan Thee Stallion telling Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) that “Y2K fire crotch is back.”
In 2006, a TMZ video made headlines for oil empire heir Brandon Davis’ insulting comments about Lohan, which included him referring to the actress as a “fire crotch.”
The controversial joke is now missing from some versions of the film’s digital release, including an edition rented from Amazon by The Hollywood Reporter.

Within hours of Mean Girls’ (2024) box office-topping release, bootleg video of Avantika’s song-and-dance number, “Sexy,” circulated social media to the praise of people far and wide.
Avantika plays a new take on Amanda Seyfried’s Karen in Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.’s film adaptation of Tina Fey’s Mean Girls Broadway musical, which was based on Fey and Mark Waters’ 2004 comedy classic. (The original Mean Girls was also based on Rosalind Wiseman’s book Queen Bees and Wannabes.) Like the Karen before her, Avantika’s version of the character is also endearingly slow on the uptake, often garnering the film’s best jokes and biggest laughs, but Fey, who returned as screenwriter, opted to not just play all the hits again, such as Karen’s “weather report.”

Lindsay Lohan did not appreciate a line in the new Mean Girls film that appears to reference a crude comment about the actress that made headlines nearly two decades ago.
A scene in the Paramount movie, which topped the domestic box office over the weekend, includes Megan Thee Stallion portraying herself as she offers support for Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) by saying, “Y2K fire crotch is back.” Back in 2006, a TMZ video made headlines over oil empire heir Brandon Davis’ insulting comments about Lohan, which included him referring to the actress as a “fire crotch.”
“Lindsay was very hurt and disappointed by the reference in the film,” Lohan’s publicist, Leslie Sloane, said in a statement shared with People and other media outlets.

Lindsay Lohan was fetch long before fetch was a thing. So, it should come as no surprise that Paramount paid the actor handsomely to cameo in the new “Mean Girls.”
Sources say Lohan, who became one of young Hollywood’s biggest stars after starring in the 2004 film of the same name, pulled down about $500,000 for a half a day of work in the latest incarnation, a musical that stars a new clique of Plastics led by Angourie Rice and Reneé Rapp. Paramount declined comment. A rep for Lohan declined a request for comment.
Lohan’s surprise entrance in the new film, written by Tina Fey, drew thunderous applause at the New York premiere on Jan. 8. Originally gracing our screens in 2004, the seminal Mean Girls movie emerged as a cultural touchstone, capturing the essence of the early 2000s through its endlessly quotable lines and resonant exploration of millennial teenage angst. Penned by the comedic genius Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live) and featuring the talents of a youthful Lindsay Lohan (The Parent Trap), the film artfully depicted high school as a tumultuous battleground defined by archetypal cliques.
Fast forward to 2018, and Tina Fey’s original screenplay underwent a theatrical transformation, landing on Broadway as the dazzling Mean Girls: The Musical. However, this triumphant debut was abruptly halted by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020, bringing the curtains down on its promising run.

Paramount’s “Mean Girls” musical earned a grool $33.2 million from 3,791 theaters over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, beating expectations.
Based on the Broadway adaptation of the 2004 comedy classic, “Mean Girls” was originally commissioned with plans to skip theaters and make a streaming debut directly on Paramount+, but executives opted for a theatrical release after test screenings. The musical film cost just $36 million.
The new “Mean Girls” stars Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, a role originated by Lindsay Lohan, who must navigate the social scene of her new high school ruled by the Plastics. Reneé Rapp reprises her Broadway role as queen bee Regina George, with a cast that also includes Bebe Wood, Avantika, Jaquel Spivey, Auli’i Cravalho and original stars Tim Meadows and producer-writer Tina Fey.
Paramount intentionally downplayed the song-and-dance numbers in promotional materials for the movie musical, which earned a “B” grade through research firm Cinema Score.

Overseas, it launched in only a few major markets but got off to a first-rate start in Australia and Mexico, where it came in No. 1. Tina Fey agreed to return to 'Mean Girls' if she didn't have to sing. The 53-year-old actress and her co-star Tim Meadows reprised their roles as Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall from the original movie in the new big screen musical adaptation, but she admitted their involvement was conditional on them being able to just stick to dialogue.Tina told People magazine: "I am reprising my role as Ms. Norbury because we thought, well, teachers work for a long time. So it might make sense if Tim and I did it."So I called Tim and I was like, 'Will you do it? I'll do it if you do it.' And we said yes, as long as we don't have to sing."Tina relished working with the 62-year-old actor - who previously reprised his role in 'Mean Girls 2' - again. She added: "It was fun. Tina Fey has revealed the one stipulation that she and Tim Meadows had about reprising their roles in the new Mean Girls movie.
It’s been nearly 20 years since Fey and Meadows initially starred as Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall, respectively, in the 2004 film. But they decided to return as their iconic characters in the new movie musical adaptation, based on the 2018 Broadway musical, as long as they didn’t have to sing.
“I am reprising my role as Ms. Norbury because we thought, well, teachers work for a long time. So it might make sense if Tim and I did it,” Fey recently told People magazine. “So I called Tim and I was like, ‘Will you do it? I’ll do it if you do it.’ And we said, ‘Yes, as long as we don’t have to sing.'”
The actress-comedian added of working with Meadows again, “It was fun.

Paramount’s “Mean Girls” musical is winning most popular at the domestic box office this weekend. The adaptation of the Broadway adaptation of the beloved 2004 comedy is off to a strong start, coming in ahead of the latest Jason Statham actioner “The Beekeeper.”
“Mean Girls” earned $11.65 million from 3,791 theaters across Friday and preview screenings, tracking to a four-day opening of $31.5 million through the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. That’s quite a substantial figure for a musical that was originally commissioned with plans to skip theaters and make a streaming debut directly on Paramount+. The studio changed its tune after test screenings.
From its first trailer, many viewers took notice that the marketing for the “Mean Girls” musical seemed to purposefully exclude song-and-dance numbers. Some ticketbuyers may have been caught by surprise to discover a big screen adaptation of a Broadway musical, as indicated by the middling “B” grade...

Get in, loser. We’re going to make some money at the box office. Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and the Plastics of Paramount‘s Mean Girls wore green on Thursday when the cult classic comedy musical adaptation banked $3.25M in previews. The latest iteration of Mean Girls began burning books on the silver screen (again) at 4 pm on Thursday, giving the film written by Tina Fey a solid start to the weekend. Before Mean Girls was destined for the big screen, it was planned as a Paramount+ exclusive. However, test screenings made it clear the musical could put asses in seats, thus the pivot to cinemas.
Another movie buzzing into theaters this week is the David Ayer action film The Beekeeper, starring Jason Statham as a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as “Beekeepers.” Ayer’s action-packed romp collected $2.4M in box office honey on Thursday. Statham...

Get in, loser, we’re going to the box office.
Paramount’s “Mean Girls,” a musical adaptation and more Gen Z-skewing version of the iconic teen comedy, is coming to the big screen this weekend. It has made $3.25 million at the box office in Thursday previews.
The 2024 film is based on the popular 2018 Broadway musical, which is based on the 2004 comedy, which is based on the 2002 book “Queen Bees and Wannabees.” The new version stars Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, the homeschooled fish out of water originally played by Lindsay Lohan. She joins a new school and befriends The Plastics, the “cool girl” squad played in this reimagining by Renee Rapp, Bebe Wood and Avantika — who take over from Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfriend.

Mean Girls strutted to $3.3 million in previews at the North American box office, on par with Wonka.
Paramount’s movie adaptation of the Broadway musical is based on the 2004 big-screen teen comedy that turned into a cultural classic. The new movie is expected to open to as much as $30 million over the long Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, easily enough for a first-place finish.
Directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., Mean Girls cost a relatively modest $36 million to produce before marketing, and is the latest musical to brave the big screen after Wonka and The Color Purple.
The female-fueled film arrives on the big screen 20 years after the Lindsay Lohan-led cult classic Mean Girls, which was directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey.
Fey latter returned to pen the script for the new film, which stars Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho, Bebe Wood and Chris Briney.

Review: For those that weren’t there, it’s hard to describe just how massive Mean Girls was in the mid-2000s. It essentially changed the way high schoolers were represented in movies. I’m not usually a fan of these types of films yet Mean Girls has always stood out as a witty and clever comedy that is honestly pretty funny. But my enjoyment of the film didn’t go past that. The musical stage play or book that followed also received acclaim, though I’m not familiar with either. I simply went into this expecting a Mean Girls musical and that’s exactly what I got.

Get ready for another “full circle film”, an IP (intellectual property) that began in one medium, was adapted to another, and then returns to that original medium. One of the more recent Broadway trends, along with the “jukebox musical”, has been taking an often beloved feature film and adapting it into a big splashy stage musical. And when they’re big hits, then bring the musical take to the big screen. Back in 2005, The Producers did the big “whip-around” when the musical based on the 1967 Oscar-winning classic played (briefly) at the multiplex. We don’t really need a reboot of Mean Girls, or indeed a film adaptation of the stage musical. But there you go, we are where we are. And that’s 2024, 20 years after the release of the seminal high school movie starring Lindsay Lohan which was based on the non-fiction book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman. Fashions have changed, social media is now ubiquitous, but teenage girls are still cliquey and judgey so the story hasn’t required a massive update. Perhaps that’s to its detriment, because this movie, directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., is really an example of pop culture eating itself. The musical came because people liked the film. Now the new film exists, presumably for people who like the musical, while not having the unique selling point of it being on the stage. But if you can get over the audacity...

The very first shot of the 2024 musical reimagining of "Mean Girls" is a vertical frame. Two characters, Janis (played by Auli'i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), film themselves singing a song that sets the stage for the story to follow. They're troubadours for the TikTok set - and this is a "Mean Girls" for a new generation.
The Cady Heron, Regina George, and Aaron Samuels of the original film, released in 2004, had never seen an iPhone - those wouldn't debut for another three years. "Instagram," "Twitter," and "Snapchat" would have sounded like gibberish. Karen was just a name, and Donald Trump was just a business mogul.
Twenty years later . . . well, things are different. We've seen not just a technological revolution, but a cultural one. More Americans have become more aware of how rampant racism and discrimination - from microaggressions to hate crimes - are in this country. And while we...

After a late start to its fourth season and behind-the-scenes turmoil, The Drew Barrymore Show has received and early, drama-free renewal for a fifth season on the CBS Stations.
It is the first pickup for the syndicated daytime talker since the major reorganization at the show’s producer and distributor CBS Media Ventures, which was put under the purview of Wendy McMahon, now President and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures.
The renewal also comes after a rocky fall for The Drew Barrymore Show whose host originally announced a Sept. 18 return, while the writers were still striking, before reversing the decision amid picketing of the show and outcry from WGA members.
Season 4 instead launched post-strike on Oct. 16 but without the program’s three WGA-member writers who declined to return and had to be replaced.

Mean Girls should do nice business in its box office debut.
Paramount’s movie adaptation of the Broadway musical that was, in turn, based on the 2004 big-screen teen comedy is expected to open to as much as $30 million over the long Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
That would mark a great start for a studio film that cost a relatively modest $36 million to produce before marketing, not to mention a musical, a genre that has become an endangered species (Wonka aside).

The holidays were dominated by two movie musicals — “Wonka” and “The Color Purple” — and just two weeks into January, we get a third one. “Mean Girls” is likely to not only be the biggest movie of the extended MLK Jr. weekend, but of the entire month. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

1999 was the apex of teen girl cinema, with over a dozen new releases now hailed in "girl world" as seminal classics. But that year also brought the financial juggernaut of "American Pie," and Hollywood realized that there was serious money to be made with boy-centered sex comedies. Pair that with the horrific tragedy at Columbine High School, and suddenly problems like a boy pretending to like you for a payday felt frivolous, and edgier fare felt too dangerous to be entertaining. Teen girl movies didn't outright disappear, but they certainly fell out of popularity and became niche, "chick flick" fare more than ever. The genre has never fully recovered and continues to fight for respect and relevance 25 years later. Fortunately, there have been culture-shifting pop cultural juggernauts that remind Hollywood (and society at large) that teen girls are and will forever be the true tastemakers.

Not every movie — indeed, almost no movie — was meant to be turned into a musical. But the trend of doing so has become more common over the last two decades, and when you see a movie-to-musical transformation that really works, a surprising alchemy occurs. It can feel as if that story was always made to be told through song and dance; when you think back on the non-musical version, it can now seem like it’s missing something. That’s the sensation I’ve had at movies-turned-Broadway-musicals like “Hairspray,” “School of Rock” (built around Andrew Lloyd Webber’s greatest score in decades), and even “Back to the Future”.
The same dynamic works, in a clever if less spectacular way, in “Mean Girls,” the movie adaptation of the 2018 Broadway musical version of the classic 2004 screen comedy. Will the new movie replace the original film in anyone’s affections? That might depend on how old you are.

Mean Girls 2024, directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., and starring a vibrant ensemble including Renée Rapp, Auliʻi Cravalho, Angourie Rice, Tina Fey (who also wrote the screenplay), Jaquel Spivey, and many others brings the classic 2004 teen comedy into the modern era with updated cultural references and a more diverse cast. However, the film struggles to justify its existence beyond surface-level changes and ultimately falters in delivering a coherent, impactful story that offers little new or compelling.
Mean Girls is adapted from Rosalind Wiseman’s 2002 book, Queen Bees and Wannabes and became a Broadway musical in 2018 featuring music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. The new movie closely follows the plot of the original film and centers around Cady Heron (Rice), a naive teenager who spent her childhood in Africa with her parents. It opens with energy and smarts to spare. Picture this: perpetual franchise breakouts Janis and Damian are guiding us (their already captive audience) through what’s to come, care of a fourth wall-breaking, high-energy musical sequence centered around the tantalizingly-named banger “A Cautionary Tale.” This tale is, of course, all about young Cady Heron, an awkward (but endearing) teenager who is about to move from Kenya (not Kentucky) to a suburban high school and get her life utterly rocked by the social mores of American teenagehood.
Somewhere, someone who doesn’t even go here is yelling, “This isn’t your mother’s ‘Mean Girls’!,” but actually, it mostly is, now just with song and dance. When “Mean Girls” went to the stage in 2017, it was aided immeasurably by persistence of vision: Tina Fey, who had initially adapted a non-fiction parenting book to make her 2004 teen hit, also penned the book that would bring the,...

Mark Waters’ hit comedy about the savage jungle of high school cliques, Mean Girls, had enough instant-classic dialogue and memorable characters to become a touchstone for the generation either in or fresh out of their teens when it was released in 2004 and those who have discovered it in the years since. With screenwriter Tina Fey continuing to steer the vehicle, the property navigated the transition to Broadway musical in 2018 with plenty of its original charms intact and some even fortified thanks to the expressive magic of characters bursting into songs that reveal their inner lives.
The show was never going to keep Stephen Sondheim awake nights with its workmanlike tunes composed by Fey’s husband, Jeff Richmond. But Nell Benjamin’s frequently clever lyrics delivered laughs and director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw’s flair for kinetic showmanship made it a high-energy explosion of hormonal insecurity, malice, vulnerability and hard-won life lessons.
