When we last left the Downton Abbey crew — various Crawleys, assorted Pelhams, some Talbots, and their lively band of servants — things were looking on the up and up. The king and queen had come to visit and, after a predictably amusing series of mishaps and pratfalls, the stopover had proven to be a massive success. Loves were lost and found again. Matriarchs rose and fell. History was kept close and cherished. The estate didn’t burn down. No one died.
It all made for a charming last hurrah, with the film picking up five years after the beloved television series had ended, giving both fans and newbies a glimpse into how the lives and loves of a sprawling cast of characters were continuing to unfold. And yet, while Michael Engler’s film offered plenty of closure on a number of stories and subplots, it also seemed to test the waters...

A trailer for the fifth series of Downton Abbey has debuted, with the premiere date also being revealed.
The first-look promo confirmed that Julian Fellowes's period drama will return to ITV on September 21.
ITV controller Peter Fincham: 'Downton Abbey was a bloody great risk'
The fifth series will see the Crawleys and their staff adapt to life in the 1920s.
Richard E Grant joins the cast as "charming art historian" Simon Bricker, while other newcomers include Royle Family actress Sue Johnston as the Dowager Countess's (Maggie Smith) maid Denker, 4-year-old Fifi Hart as Sybbie, and twins Oliver and Zac Barker as George Crawley.
A publicity shot for the new series attracted global headlines earlier this month when a rogue water bottle stole focus.
Downton Abbey returns to ITV at 9pm on Sunday, September 21.

Downton Abbey's fifth series is just around the corner, and despite an embarrassing incident with a plastic bottle in one of the promotional pictures dominating a lot of today's (August 14) coverage, there are also some exciting glimpses of what's in store for fans of the period drama.
The first official pictures for the new series include a shot of Richard E Grant's "charming art historian" Simon Bricker, who will appear in four episodes.
Other new arrivals in series five include Royle Family actress Sue Johnston as Denker, lady's maid to Dame Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess, 4-year-old Fifi Hart as Sybbie, and twins Oliver and Zac Barker as George Crawley.
Downton's executive producer Gareth Neame has promised "high-stakes drama, laugh-out-loud comedy and romance" in the new episodes.

Can Downton Abbey creatively rebound in season 5? These stately portrait shots from next season offer few clues on that front. In addition to featuring the returning cast such as Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter, Joanne Froggatt and Allen Leech, they feature newcomers Fifi Hart as Sybbie, twins Zac and Oliver Barker as George, and Richard E. Grant as Simon Bricker (yes, suggesting another time jump).
Granted, one image shows Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) with a pair of shotguns—but the gang is probably just going fox hunting or something, right?
Downton Abbey returns stateside on PBS Masterpiece in January.

Downton Abbey has never shied away from the occasional time jump, but when the Masterpiece series returns for a fifth season in 2015, viewers will definitely notice the effect of time on at least two members of the Crawley family.
The PBS drama’s official Instagram unveiled the first look at two toddler actors who will play the mildly grown-up versions of Sybbie and George, last season’s VIBs (very important babies). The kids in question are, of course, the daughter of Tom Branson and his late wife Sybil and the son of Lady Mary and her late husband Matthew.
