The Gentlemen isn’t your normal crime-drama and that’s made clear from the very first episode and the series is all the better for it. Guy Ritchie’s incredible style in storytelling is front and center and while it may stumble at some points, at the end the series gives the fans what it wants (excluding a cameo from Matthew McConaughey or Charlie Hunnam), and the characters in this series are either balls to walls crazy or so suave that they make criminality look sexy.
The Netflix series follows the story of Eddie Horniman, the second son of the Horniman family who surprisingly gets everything after his father’s death, but Eddie is even more surprised as he finds out that Daddy didn’t make all that money investing in stocks, but had some unsavory cohorts, who work on the other side of the law. Leo Maidenberg’s Paris-based company Place du Marché Productions is developing a slate of French and international films and TV series with acclaimed talents, including Daphna Levin, the creator of the Israeli series “Euphoria,” as well as Sarah Kaminsky (“Raid Dingue”) and Leïla Sy (“Banlieusards”).
Maidenberg, who launched Place du Marché in 2018 after a career in diplomacy and made his producing debut with Caroline Fourest’s politically charged action film “Sisters in Arms,” has teamed with Kim Younes at Elvie Productions on a pair of high concept Israeli series.
The first title produced by the two banners is “The Truth,” a police thriller series co-written and directed by Levin, whose credits also include the original Israeli series “In Therapy.” Set in Tel Aviv, “The Truth” opens on the day of the final verdict for the most controversial murder case in Israel, 10 years after the incident which took place in a high school gym.

On the outskirts of Paris, in a vast, industrial-looking studio in Bry-sur-Marne, the clocks have turned back to the 1770s. Opulent decor — gilded furniture, flower-adorned curtains and marble everywhere — fills the soundstage.
The atmosphere is studious on the set of “Marie-Antoinette,” a lavish French-produced costume drama created, co-written and executive produced by Deborah Davis. She’s delivering a feminist take on an infamous historical figure, best-known for apocryphally advising the starving masses to eat cake. We all know how that ended.
On screen, Marie-Antoinette hasn’t been treated better than she was at the guillotine, where she’s often depicted as a villain or a frivolous airhead.
“I found the fighter, and I loved being with her all the way through her battles,” says Davis, the Oscar-nominated writer of “The Favourite,” which focused on another queen, England’s Anne.

You don’t have to experience profound loss to know it’s debilitating. It sticks with you. No matter how you try to avoid it, the memories never fade. This is the reality of widower Eric Black (Tom Hughes) in Russell Owen’s sophomore feature, Shepherd. Touching on grief and guilt, and taking inspiration from Welsh ghost stories, Owen creates an engrossing experience that makes the audience feel they are going through every emotion that plagues the titular shepherd. He’s desperately searching for peace – but he may never find it.
“Such guilt so heavy a punishment endures.” The film quotes Dante’s Inferno in its opening frame, and the sound design that follows provides the sense that Eric is drowning in the pits of hell, so desperate to swim back up – like most with depression feel. He’s alone, living in a house in shambles, and the image of...

The incongruities abound at the start of Russell Owen’s Shepherd to put us in a state of unease the moment we discover Eric Black’s (Tom Hughes) wife Rachel (Gaia Weiss) has died at sea, her body lost. He and those who knew her fill her coffin with memories and keepsakes instead, a pile of objects that appear contemporary in their appearance despite them now inhabiting an old-timey wooden planked box sealed shut with rough nails from a bygone era. Did my eyes deceive me? Were Rachel’s belongings not as modern as I assumed? Was Owen’s setting always a window into the past? If not for the alarm clock that wakes Eric, I might have believed it. With its presence, however, it seems this widower is caught completely out-of-time.

"Delivers genuine scares." This film is worth a look. Saban Films has debuted a new official US trailer for Shepherd a horror film from a Welsh filmmaker. This one premiered at last year's London Film Festival and we ran a trailer last year when it showed up there. Eric Black is lost after the mysterious death of his adulterous wife. Running from his past to a new job as a Shepherd, he soon finds himself trapped alone on a majestic, hazy weather-beaten island with an ominous secret. One mans spiraling madness meets a vengeful supernatural force. Starring Tom Hughes, Kate Dickie, Gaia Weiss, and Greta Scacchi. This looks like it might be damn good - a seriously stylish and compelling thriller with some eerie shots and heaps of mystery and intrigue. I still really want to give this a watch when it opens here in the US soon. Check it out.

If there’s one genre that’s suffered criticism over the past couple of decades – and rightly so – it’s horror. So many movies have failed to be… well, scary, but here’s one that shows us (and hopefully a few filmmakers) how it’s done. Shepherd is crooked for all the right reasons.
It’s a major feather in the cap for writer-director Russell Owen, and this was borne out by the movie making an Official Selection at last year’s BFI London Film Festival.
The spectacular Scottish Highlands form the backdrop for the first part of this creepy tale, which incidentally was the setting for another modern British success story, 2002s Dog Soldiers. Here we find Eric Black (Tom Hughes), who’s recently been widowed by the mysterious death of his wife Rachel (Gaia Weiss) and has more than a few demons to contend with. After seeing a...

Saban Films has acquired North American rights to “Shepherd,” a supernatural thriller by writer-director Russell Owen.
Following its world premiere at BFI London Film Festival, “Shepherd” was released in theaters in the United Kingdom last month and has generated $19 million to date. It doesn’t yet have a release date domestically.
“Shepherd” centers on Eric Black, who finds work on a remote, weather-worn Scottish island after the sudden death of his wife. As his sadness continues to engulf him, so do the supernatural portents of his stark new surroundings. He soon becomes plagued by terrifying visions until it is clear he must confront his past trauma to survive.
The film stars Tom Hughes, Kate Dickie, Gaia Weiss and Greta Scacchi (The Player). Karim Prince Tshibangu and Aslam Parvez served as producers.
Owen calls the movie a “passion project,” one that is loosely based on a true story from his native Wales.

Scything strings, ticking clocks and a lighthouse bell tolling make for an atmospheric if Ott drama
“Something’s haunting you, Mr Black. I can see it. Hope you get the chance to confront it.” With this utterance coming from Kate Dickie, playing a one-eyed ferry operator who keeps a stuffed crow on her boat, you know that confrontation is a given. She’s just shipped Eric Black (Tom Hughes) and his collie Baxter across a menacing stretch of water to the prehistoric-looking Scottish island where a husk of a cottage and a job as resident shepherd await him. “Escaping or running?” she asks, but he dodges the question. What is left unsaid is that he has just buried his pregnant wife Rachel (Gaia Weiss), something his face – a study in pasty desolation – suggests he may have had a hand in.

"You're stuck in a pipe full of deadly traps. How far will you go?" Gravitas Ventures has unveiled an official US trailer for a French sci-fi thriller titled Meander, another Cube-inspired stuck-in-rooms genre movie. This premiered at the Sitges Film Festival last year, and also played at the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival and Monster Fest. A woman wakes up locked in series of strange tubes full of deadly traps. Every 8 minutes, she must move forward or die. But why? Is there any escape? That's the premise for this one - which is a lot like Cube, but with a few diuniqurfferent aspects. Starring Gaia Weiss as Lisa, with Peter Franzén and Romane Libert. This gets very strange with some weird zombies and freaky stuff. I'm sold! Need to see it. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Mathieu Turi's Meander, direct from YouTube (via B-d): You wake up.

Spectrevision’s “Archenemy” stars Joe Manganiello (“True Blood”) as a hero from another dimension exiled to Earth, while the Venice Film Festival’s sleeper hit “Mandibles” is a surreal buddy road movie starring comedy duo David Marsais and Grégoire Ludig, known for “La Folle Histoire du Palmashow,” as well as Coralie Russier (“120 Bpm”), Adèle Exarchopoulos (“Blue Is The Warmest Color”) and rapper Romeo Elvis.
Thriller “Meander” features Gaia Weiss (“Vikings”) as a woman who wakes up in a seemingly never-ending metal tube and is forced to overcome a variety of deadly traps to survive.

Meander is sci-fi horror thriller. In production since 2020, this title involves a woman who is kidnapped. Strangely, she finds herself trapped in a series of pipes, with little time to escape each section. This film has been developed by Mathieu Turi (Hostile). As well, Meander stars Gaia Weiss ("Vikings") and Peter Franzen (The Gunman). More story details have been released for the film, along with two early stills. A longer synopsis mentions a fire burning in a series of pipes. The protagonist only has eight minutes to escape each length, before fire burns the section. Lisa must crawl her way to safer sections, while confronting memories of her dead daughter. The two new stills show Lisa in frame. In one still, she looks at her daughter, with little light. In another, Lisa is navigating the system of pipes, in search of a way out. Both stills focus on few characters and a tight squeeze.

“Vikings” star Gaia Weiss has joined the cast of the sci fi thriller “Meander” directed by Mathieu Turi, whose post-apocalyptic debut, “Hostile,” was a genre film hit. WTFilms, a co-producer on the film, is handling worldwide sales and has unveiled the first still from the movie.
Written and directed by Turi, the English-language film stars Weiss as a woman who wakes up in a labyrinth of strange tubes full of deadly traps. Her only option is to keep moving forward, but it is not clear how far she can get. Peter Franzen, who also starred in “Vikings,” plays a man whose intentions are mysterious.
“Meander” is produced by Eric Gendarme, Thomas Lubeau, Marc Olla and Jordan Sarralie at Fulltime Studio, and Sandra Karim, Julien Deris and David Gauquie at Cinefrance Studios.

While the beginning of fall usually means back-to-school and the end of outdoor barbecues, Hollywood has its own way of changing seasons. The Toronto International Film Festival, which starts on Sept. 5, marks the official launch of the Oscars race.
Unlike neighboring film festivals at Telluride and Venice, which both take place on the weekend before, Toronto is easier to reach and packed with far more screenings: more than 200 movies. Here are 14 that will likely be the talk of Canada.
“Hustlers”
(Stx Entertainment, Sept. 13)
Director: Lorene Scafaria
Cast: Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez, Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, Cardi B, Lizzo
Ever since I saw “Hustlers” at an early screening, I can’t stop raving about it. Every Oscars season, there’s a movie that sneaks up on the pundits. And I have a feeling that this dramatic comedy written and directed by Lorene Scafaria will be a box office hit and critical darling.

Finally, the day we’ve all been waiting for has arrived. No, I’m not talking about any of that “Oscars” silliness, or Neil Patrick Harris taking on hosting duties. No, I’m talking about the 2015 Razzie Awards, in which all the crap of the crop from this past year in cinema at last gets its well-deserved comeuppance.
This year’s “winners” are a particularly disreputable bunch, with Kirk Cameron leading the pack for his atrocious Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas and Michael Bay reliably racking up more Golden Raspberry Awards for Transformers 4: Age of Extinction. It was a strangely good night for Ben Affleck, who took home the “Redeemer” Award for turning his career around from Gigli to Gone Girl, and a bad one for Cameron Diaz, who lost out in Worst Supporting Actress for Annie (which still, deservedly, won Worst Remake, Rip-off or Sequel) but received...

The 2015 Razzies "winners" have been announced, leaving the "losers" to breathe a collective sigh of relief -- because, well, who the hell wants to win a Razzie?
You see, for the past 35 years, on the eve of the Oscars, the Golden Raspberry Awards has honored the very best of the very worst movies released the previous year -- and this year's competition was nothing short of spectacular...ly tragic. Everyone -- from Razzie favorites Nicolas Cage and Michael Bay to newcomers Nicola Peltz and Gaia Weiss -- was in the crosshairs, but only 10 took home Razzies.

History's "Vikings" returns for its third season on Thursday (February 19) night and through three episodes, I can safely say that Michael Hirst's saga of pillaging and migration remains everything it has been almost from its premiere. Over two seasons, "Vikings" has delivered solidly above-average thrills that exceed the requirements of its basic cable home. The show has a passionate audience already, but I'm reasonably sure there's a far larger audience out there that would get a kick out of "Vikings," because it really is one of those shows that check a wide number of demographic boxes. "Vikings" is reliably badass, if you like that sort of thing. Maybe not every episode, but probably every two or three, the directors and choreographers deliver a visceral Viking action set-piece that has both admirable scale, but also a raw, gory intimacy. Perhaps more than any other action show on television, "Vikings" conveys...

The Academy just announced the best in cinema of 2014 and now, here comes the Razzie saluting the worst! And I thought he was horrible in the movie!

The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation has announced the nominations for the 35th annual Razzie Awards. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Legend of Hercules, and Transformers 4: Age of Ex-stink-Tion are leading the nominations for worst movies of the year. The only name I don't think belongs on this list of nominations is Mel Gibson for his role in The Expendables 3, because he was freakin' awesome in that!
You can check out the full announcement below, followed by the nominations list. Look it over and let us know if you agree with what they claim is the worst of 2014.
Hollywood was not happy with box office returns for 2014, their lowest-grossing year in recent history. Despite a handful of high-grossing hits, there were way more major misses — movies based on recycled premises and re-worked concepts that were already tired a decade or more ago, the cinematic equivalent of re-treaded tires.

It’s awards season, and though most of the buzz right now is devoted to which titles stand a fighting chance of being included in tomorrow’s Oscar nominations, the 35th annual Golden Raspberry Awards, known as the Razzies, are here with their nominees to remind us that even that the most loathsome crap of the cinematic crop may be handled some trophies of their own next month.
The nominees for this year’s Razzies – the “winners” of which will be announced on February 21st, the night before the Oscars – are hardly surprising.
