It was a clean sweep for Taylor Swift at the 2024 Gold Derby Music Awards. She came into our fourth annual event with nine nominations and walked away with nine victories including Artist of the Year for the fourth year in a row. Watch the announcement video above for winners in all categories, and scroll down for the complete list.
In the history of the GDMAs thus far, Swift is the only artist who has won Artist of the Year. She’s also the only artist who has won Record of the Year and Song of the Year. But her Album of the Year victory for “Midnights” is only her second in that race. She previously won in 2021 for “Folklore,” but Lana Del Rey claimed that honor in 2022 for “Chemtrails Over the Country Club” and Beyonce prevailed in 2023 for “Renaissance.”

Justin Timberlake released his new single “Selfish” on January 25. It’s the lead single from his forthcoming album “Everything I Thought It Was,” which is his first new collection since “Man of the Woods” six years ago. Do you think the song sounds like a potential Grammy winner for the artist after so much time away? Watch the official music video above.
Timberlake is a 10-time Grammy winner across his career, but he only received one nomination for his “Man of the Woods” era: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for his Chris Stapleton-assisted top-10 hit single “Say Something.” The last time he won an award from the Recording Academy was Best Visual Media Song for “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” from “Trolls,” a prize he shared with co-writers Max Martin and Shellback.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is set to dominate the original song race. Oscar voters will likely pick all three contenders from the blockbuster for the original song shortlist: Billie Eilish’s tear-inducing ballad “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s pitiful song of feeling inadequate “I’m Just Ken.”
Mark Ronson and songwriting partner Andrew Wyatt wrote the latter two, while Eilish partnered with brother Finneas on her tune. However, with only two nominations allowed in this category, it will be left to the music branch to decide which two they pick.
Lenny Kravitz eyes a spot on the list with “Road to Freedom,” a song he penned for George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin.” The soulful song’s horns and trombones are key to this composition, which accompanies the film’s end credits.

Sabrina Carpenter’s Red era is in full swing — and it’s dropping the same dead weight of an ex as she did on her latest album, Emails I Can’t Send. For Spotify Singles, the singer slipped into an airy, country twang to deliver a haunting rendition of Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble,” the narrative of which she has come to know all too well in her own life.
Carpenter completely stripped away the Edm highs that defined the Max Martin and Shellback-produced Red single.

*Nsync have released “Better Place,” the boy band’s first song in over 20 years. The comeback single comes off the soundtrack for Trolls Band Together, the third installment of the Justin Timberlake-starring, animated musical film franchise.
Aptly sharing the message that “When we’re together, you know that we do it better,” *Nsync lean into their pop sensibilities on “Better Place.” Produced by Shellback — who also collaborated with Timberlake for the first Trolls movie — the single features the ’70s-inspired, disco sound that made the first film’s smash hit, “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” so irresistible. As a driving kick drum holds down the bottom, funky guitars and the boy band’s iconic blend of voices provide color over top, with a grooving bass line gluing everything together.

“We are going to die by sequins and screams,” my editor texted me as he approached Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour show Tuesday night at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium. He was right to worry. The reflective glow of shiny fast-fashion dresses worn by blond girls, their blond moms, and a slightly more diverse subset of attendees than the singer’s Reputation Tour could be seen blocks away, in what seemed to be the agreed-upon and accessible, if obvious, sartorial interpretation of the Midnights track “Bejeweled.”
The allure of a Swift performance has little to do with the traditional qualities that draw people to live shows. She’s honed her voice into a reliable instrument, but no one’s sobbing over her vibrato the way Adele fans do. Several songs in Tuesday’s set that tested her higher range, such as “Wildest Dreams,” betrayed her dependence on a backing track to do the heavy lifting.

Taylor Swift has become one of the biggest pop stars of her generation. Over the course of her career, she has transformed herself from a country music singer-songwriter into a global pop icon. Swift began performing at a young age in her hometown of Reading, Pennsylvania. Her self-titled debut album was released when she was just 16 years old, launching her into stardom. In the decade since, Swift has released six more studio albums, won 10 Grammy Awards, and sold over 50 million albums worldwide. Her crossover from country to pop began with her fourth album Red, which incorporated synth-pop sounds and hints of dubstep. Her full transition to pop came with her fifth album 1989, which was her first official pop record. Swift is known for her narrative songwriting style and has become an influential figure for aspiring young musicians. Her journey from country sweetheart to pop royalty has been a defining story of her time.

Ed Sheeran’s –, pronounced “subtract,” is, as its title suggests, an album defined by absence, primarily as it relates to the scant amount of backing percussion or electric amplification throughout, but also in regard to its total lack of commercial sheen. Save for some radio fodder like the Max Martin and Shellback-helmed “Eyes Closed,” the English singer-songwriter’s sixth studio album hardly feels like it’s taking a major stab at pop virality.
The majority of the album’s 14 songs were co-written and produced by the National’s Aaron Dessner, who assisted Taylor Swift make a pivot toward a more intimate, stripped down sound on her cottage-core diptych Folklore and Evermore. −, or Subtract, is the fifth and, according to the British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, final installment in his series of albums using mathematical symbols as their titles, which stretches all the way back to 2011’s +. His latest release is appropriately named in the context of his career: When Sheeran initially broke through in the early 2010s, he was hailed for his storytelling-centric songwriting, which was given dramatic heft by his lilting voice and interpretative skill. Every year, there are some truly exceptional songs featured in motion pictures.
Disney and Bond films are almost always guaranteed nominations from the Academy in the Best Original Song category, often winning (as "No Time To Die" did last year).

Since her breakthrough at the turn of the century, Pink has carved out a niche as one of pop’s most restless real talkers—songs like “Family Portrait,” “Fuckin’ Perfect,” and “Dear Mr. President” have seemed to bubble out of her experiences and ruminations in real time, and the conviction and vocal power with which she delivers them makes them hit harder.
Pink’s ninth album, Trustfall, is named after the plunges people take when they want to test the devotion of those around them—a fitting metaphor for the Pennsylvania-born superstar on multiple levels.

No one puts on a show like P!nk. Just look at last year’s tour, a carnival of flashing lights and giant balloons that culminated each night in the US pop artist somersaulting through the air while suspended on wires. She’s a born ringleader.
Be that as it may, she’s sometimes missed the mark. Second LP Missundaztood, with its merging of DIY punk, garage, hip-hop and R&b asserted her dominance over pop princesses such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. But Try This, in 2003, tried too hard to replicate its predecessor’s success. P!nk does best when she makes and breaks her own rules.
Perhaps that’s why Trustfall, her ninth record, falls short. It’s less a kaleidoscope than a clash of influences, with frenetic, thrashy pop-punk competing for attention against characterless dance music. This is P!nk’s latest collaboration with pop guru Max Martin,...

Hollywood star Gerard Butler, who is gearing up for the release of his film ‘Plane’, has described his character in the movie as a man on a mission, who will do everything in his capacity to save his passengers from the imminent danger.
His character of Brodie Torrance finds himself fighting for the safety of his passengers after an emergency landing in the film. ‘Plane’ captures the story of a commercial pilot and a convicted fugitive (Mike Colter) working together to safeguard their fellow passengers.
Talking about his character in the film, Butler said, “Torrance is a rich character. Though he has no tactical experience in combating dangerous rebels, he feels a deep responsibility towards his passengers, and to the daughter he is on his way to see. After the emergency landing, he’ll go above and beyond to protect his passengers and get them home. He’s a man on a mission.

A copyright lawsuit filed against Taylor Swift for her song “Shake It Off” has been dropped.
Lawyers from both sides filed the papers that dismissed the case on Monday (12 December), just a few weeks before the proceedings were set to begin in court.
The new papers for the lawsuit, which were originally filed in 2017 by songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler, dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning it cannot be refiled.
There was no reference to a settlement for the lawsuit and lawyers reportedly didn’t respond to media requests for comment, as reported by outlets including The New York Times.
Taylor Swift has always denied the allegations of copyright infringement on the hit track, which appears on her fifth studio album 1989.
The case was originally filed in 2017, dropped and then appealed, and a judge ruled that it would go to trial, meaning the verdict would be decided by a jury.

Taylor Swift has denied any copyright infringement over her hit 2014 song “Shake it Off,” writing in a federal court document filed on Monday that “the lyrics to ‘Shake It Off’ were written entirely by me.”
Swift was first sued over the song in 2017 by songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler, who claimed she took lyrics from their 2001 song “Playas Gon’ Play” by 3Lw. The basis of their suit is that “Playas Gon’ Play,” like “Shake it Off” includes versions of the phrases “hater’s gonna hate” and “player’s gonna play.

“Mama’s been having a lot of big feelings recently,” Adele announces early on in 30. Hands up—who’s surprised? This is Adele, after all. She was born with big feelings, and ever since the day she first stepped into a recording studio, she’s been off-the-charts brilliant at sharing them with the world. That’s why total strangers hear ourselves in the swoops and raptures of her voice, even as it gets more flexible, stealthy, dangerous. If you were expecting this woman’s divorce album to be a smooth ride,...

Sam Smith’s latest late-night raid on Heartbreak Mountain opens in the very wee small hours with “Young,” an a cappella ode to loving, crying, drinking, and kissing boys, consequences be damned. The forlorn, unadorned sweep of Smith’s singing evokes torch-song crooning at its most elemental, yet their voice is subtly smoothed out in an Auto-Tune glaze. (Smith uses the pronouns they/their.) It’s a classic sentiment, but the lyrics feel ripped from the singer’s own experience, so the moment reaches across a gulf of many decades,...

Sam Smith is reborn. At least that’s how it sounds on their new single “Diamonds” — three minutes and 34 seconds of catharsis.
A little over a year ago, the London-bred singer/songwriter, whose pronouns are they/them, shared on Twitter that they’d spent the preceding year and a half in therapy, describing that stretch as the “most challenging time” of their life so far.
“I’ve watched and read so much over the last six months to try and make sense of all the mess in my head,” Smith added at the time.

On March 11th, as global measures to stop the spread of Covid-19 began to escalate, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ban on travel from mainland Europe to the United States. In a different era, this would have spelled troubling news for the entire Swedish music industry — which has long relied on its ability to export creativity (see: Max Martin, Shellback) and tech (see: Spotify) to the Us entertainment business.

Justin Timberlake paid tribute to Bill Withers, “one of my biggest idols,” following the death of the legendary soul singer Friday at the age of 81.
“You taught me so much about how to keep it simple and real. I felt such a kinship with you even before we met,” Timberlake wrote on Instagram.
“Your words and melodies… the chords that accompanied them… they reached into my soul and spoke to me so deeply. That’s what your music did. It brought so many of us closer to you and to each other.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is hunkering down to figure out what’s next for the Oscars in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
“The Academy is focused on helping our staff, our members, and the industry safely navigate through this global health and economic crisis,” an Academy spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday. “We are in the process of evaluating all aspects of this uncertain landscape and what changes may need to be made. We are committed to being nimble and forward-thinking as we discuss what is best for the future of the industry and will make further announcements in the coming days.”
As studios have decided that some of their films will premiere on digital platforms rather than in theaters, the question being raised is if the Academy will offer some sort of waiver for Oscar qualification.

Can we agree that among the eight Oscar nominations granted “A Star Is Born,” its likeliest win will be Best Song for “Shallow”? That soaring ballad sold the music-packed showbiz saga’s first trailer like nobody’s business as Lady Gaga‘s Ally started to roar before a mic. The pop chanteuse herself would receive the honor alongside her co-writers Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt. The song has already won a Golden Globe and is up for four Grammys, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Judging by the combined odds chart based on rankings by Experts, Editors and Users, “Shallow’s” support is quite deep, with more than 2,200 predicting it will win.
