With a title like Nightmare on 34th Street, I was initially hoping for a horror take on the classic Christmas story Miracle on 34th Street but I soon realised this wasn’t the case as this started shaping up as a horror anthology. But that’s okay. A horror anthology with some loose connections on that story could be pretty good too. But this wasn’t the case either. They’ve just chucked that kind of Christmas-sounding title on this Christmas horror anthology.
After the initial disappointment, I was ready to enjoy the movie though. Horror anthologies are a subgenre I generally enjoy but Nightmare on 34th Street is, at best, a mixed bag.
Initially, what turned out to be my favourite segment I didn’t actually like at first because...

In Enys Men – the much-anticipated new film written and directed by Cornish filmmaker Mark Jenkin, whose last feature, Bait (2019), earned him a Bafta for Outstanding Debut – a woman in walking boots, jeans, and a translucent red anorak trudges across gorsy moorland towards a cliff face. She clambers down, perches on a rocky outcrop, and stares intently at a few white flowers as they sway in the wind, high above clamorous waves below.
Every day she studies these flowers. Then, every day she drops a rock into an abandoned tin mine’s inky depths, and stands listening for a distant thud. She returns to an isolated, ivy-covered cottage. A standing stone sticks out of the landscape like an ancient dagger-head. The woman pulls the cord of a power generator, makes a pot of tea, listens to the scratchy, indistinct noises of a radio communication device, and, in a logbook, records the...

Do you remember having a favorite tree growing up? Maybe you shared your first kiss underneath its leafy branches, rested against its gnarled bark while reading your favorite paperbacks, or even used it as the safe spot in games of base tag with your friends. Well, the titular timber in Curse of the Witching Tree isn’t that type of tree, and in his feature film directing debut, James Crow effectively shows its horrifying historical roots.
Siblings Emma and Jake Thorson weren’t thrilled about moving to St. Jonas farm in the first place, but they find more to fear than feeding the pigs when the spirits of nine slain children begin to pop up on the grounds. Unfortunately for the teenager and her younger brother, their mom isn’t buying into their supernatural theories—she’s understandably preoccupied with the condition of her husband, who’s been in a...

Director/writer: James Crow. Cast: Sarah Rose Denton, Lucy Clarvis and Lawrence Weller. Curse of the Witching Tree is an indie production. Shot in the United Kingdom and set in Kent, this title brings a spirit to a remote farm. Here, a couple of seance scenes offer some tension, but several, other scenes feel stretched. The pacing is consistently up-tempo. However, this viewer's attention started to drift, with the appearance of cheap scares and burlap sack-headed antagonists. Curse of the Witching Tree will release in the UK, shortly and only the most die-hard of indie horror fans will want to take notice. The story begins with a desperate family. The head of the family, the father, is waylaid in bed and in a coma. A mother, sister and brother are tasked with running a farm, which is inhabited by the dead; this is no easy task. Security cameras create a few bumps in the night.

If I was to ask you to think of action movies set in tower blocks you could probably come up with movies like Die Hard, Dredd and The Raid as being some of the most popular. Working with these type of settings it allows the film to have a certain controlled level of action and even set the fighting at levels of hardness. This is something that He Who Dares does, but at a low-budget and with a certain degree of British patriotism.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Studiocanal. Director: Paul Tanter. Writers: James Crow, Simon Phillips and Paul Tanter. Cast: Tom Benedict Knight, Simon Phillips, Christina Bellavia and Ewan Ross. Director Paul Tanter (Jack Falls) has reteamed with actor Simon Phillips for another action thriller. Their latest is called He Who Dares. This United Kingdom shot film focuses on the action, while the story comes across as a little simplistic. Still, it is hard to go wrong with a hostage situation, set two hundred feet below ground. Much of the action is caught with Tanter's use of quick cuts and edits, which helps amplify the violent tension onscreen. He Who Dares is a solid action film for those looking for some light entertainment. The film begins with the villain Holt (Phillips). Cast: Nick Nevern, Kellie Shirley, Jenna Harrison, Con O'Neill, Peter Barrett, Roland Manookian, Lorraine Stanley, Mark Harris, Charlie Bond, Steven Berkoff, and Merveille Lukeba. Tagline: "Hooligan first, cop second." GBH is the latest film to come out of the United Kingdom from actor and director Simon Phillips and distributor Revolver Entertainment. The film is set during the London riots of 2011. In this setting, a love story develops between characters Damien (Nick Nevern) and Louise (Kelly Shirley). Violent events split them apart. The film offers an anti-violent message, but that message might be lost amongst all of the chaos occurring onscreen. Overall, GBH is an entertaining film with only a couple film elements hampering the film's full potential. If you did not know.
