It’s wacky, daffy and incredibly square, yet Frank Tashlin’s late career Doris Day romp has a certain gotta-watch interest factor: the male cast of clowns performs the sexist comedy well, and Ms. Day’s fantastic screen personality brightens everything. Space-age executive lothario Rod Taylor hires Doris just for romantic purposes, while Arthur Godfrey, John McGiver, Dom DeLuise, Edward Andrews, Paul Lynde and Dick Martin execute dated slapstick amid ‘futuristic’ gadgets from the days of Buck Rogers.

Just when we thought the ‘dystopian future’ trend of Young Adult fiction adaptations had finally come to an end, along comes The Darkest Minds to drag us back into this well-worn genre. The good news is that, unlike many of these ‘teenage-apocalypse’ efforts, the force is strong with this one. Its ever improving-pedigree now includes a talented female director, a talented female lead, and not one, but two women connected to the Star Wars universe.
The source material in question is The Darkest Minds book series, by Alexandra Bracken. These tales – set in the obligatory dystopian future – focus on a 16 year old girl named Ruby, who finds she has special powers. As she begins to explore them, and attempts to bring them under control, she escapes a prison camp in search of a young leader who is said to be able to control these incredible abilities. Along the way, she...

King granted summary judgment to filmmakers including director Jennifer Nelson, who had challenged Warner/Chappell Music’s decades-old copyright claims to one of the best-known English-language tunes. Warner/Chappell reportedly earns about $2 million annually in royalties on public performances of the song since the company acquired Birch Tree Group, the successor to Clayton Summy Co., the song’s original copyright owner. American Cinema Editors (Ace) today announced nominations for the 64th Annual Ace Eddie Awards recognizing outstanding editing in ten categories of film, television and documentaries. Winners will be revealed during Ace’s annual black-tie awards ceremony on Friday, February 7, 2014 in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
The Ace Eddie Awards is considered an integral precursor to the Oscars. No film has won Best Picture at the Oscars without also having received at least a Best Editing nomination since Ordinary People in 1981. Since the Ace membership boasts a very high crossover within its membership of Academy members, it represents a very accurate bellwether for the eventual Oscar outcome.
