Eiichiro Oda’s one-shot manga Monsters recently got an anime adaptation with the title Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation which was released on January 21 on Netflix. The series revolved around the story of Shimotsuki Ryuma from One Piece, who was known for defeating a dragon all by himself. He is considered to be the strongest swordsman to ever exist in the One Piece universe.
Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation
The anime adaptation was directed by Sunghoo Park, who is a South Korean animator and director. He is majorly known for directing the first season of Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen anime. Park’s contribution to the anime adaptation was one of the reasons why Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation became such a huge hit.

Considering how much of a hit the live-action One Piece series was for Netflix, the streamer appears to have gone all-in with the works of creator Eiichiro Oda. Alongside having the rights to show the anime series’ latest arc with weekly releases, an animated adaptation was revealed for an earlier short story entitled Monsters. Whilst it is understandable that the title was changed to make this short film stand out, it is curious how the new title, Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation, is considerably lengthier?!.
The twenty-six-minute short begins with Ryuma (Yoshimasa Hosoya), a swordsman who just wants food but is unable to pay. His path leads to young waitress Flare (Kana Hanazawa), who has rebuilt her life after her hometown was destroyed by a dragon.

Out of all the shonen anime available to watch right now, "Jujutsu Kaisen" stands out thanks to its creative and visually captivating fights. Between all the blasts of cursed energy and fists thrown, there's an occasional change of pace in the anime's fights that blows all others out of the water. Domain expansions involve jujutsu sorcerers manifesting their innate domain, forming a dome and using it to trap their opponent in a space that amplifies the cursed technique of the one who created it. The high-concept move is seen as a last resort in the fights of "Jujutsu Kaisen," making it so that every time it's used in the show, the stakes are raised.
The visual elements of a domain expansion were essential to Studio Mappa, the animation team behind the manga adaptation. Each character in the series has its own visually unique domain, making it a challenge to bring to life in the anime.

Sunghoo Park, who directed season 1 of the smash-hit anime series "Jujutsu Kaisen," has also helmed "Jujutsu Kaisen 0," which acts as a prequel film to the series. Translating Gege Akutami's beloved manga series to a frenetic anime came with its own set of challenges, but creating a prequel that expanded the world of "Jujutsu Kaisen" was daunting for Park. In order to take a comprehensive approach, the director decided to zero in on the many characters that feature in "Jujutsu Kaisen 0," both new and familiar. This resulted in a crew of emotionally resonant characters whom audiences could genuinely connect with.
Speaking to Crunchyroll, Park explained that the best thing he learned from the reactions of "Jujutsu Kaisen" fans was that there was massive interest in a wide range of characters. Taking this lesson, Park applied it to "Jujutsu Kaisen 0," and crafted character arcs in a seamless, meaningful way.

Everybody loves a compelling story about an underdog. The overwhelming success of the "Naruto" franchise over the years and the recent, record-breaking "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba" is testimony to this sentiment. In a story about curses, jujutsu sorcerers, and friendship, "Jujutsu Kaisen 0," the prequel to the popular "Jujutsu Kaisen" anime series (both based on Gege Akutami's manga series), recognizes the appeal of the underdog. There's a reason why "Jujutsu Kaisen 0" broke Japanese box-office history on its release. The prequel manages to tell a gripping standalone story that acts as an entry point for franchise newcomers while also being foundational and relevant for longtime fans of the anime.

The 2022 feature film animation "Jujutsu Kaisen 0," directed by Sunghoo Park, is an adaptation of the popular Gege Akutami manga of the same name — sort of. The manga series was actually first published under the title "Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School" in 2017, but was retroactively renamed after the sequel, "Jujutsu Kaisen," was a hit. "Jujutsu Kaisen" was then made into an anime series (also directed by Sunghoo Park), which began airing in 2020. As such, Park's 2022 feature film adaptation of the original manga series, now titled "Jujutsu Kaisen 0," functions as a prequel movie to the anime — even though its story...
