Roku is motoring into the live-sports game: The streaming platform landed a multiyear deal with electric-car racing circuit Formula E to stream a batch of races exclusively in the U.S.
Under the pact with London-based Formula E — an upstart modeled on the much bigger and more popular Formula One series — Roku will stream 11 races per season on the Roku Channel for viewers in the U.S. starting in 2024. In addition, CBS Sports has secured rights to five Formula E races each season, which the company will broadcast on CBS and stream on Paramount+ With Showtime.
Beginning in January 2024, five races will air live on CBS and simulcast on Paramount+ (both of which are available on Roku’s platform). And starting with the next season, 11 races in what is officially called the Abb Fia Formula E World Championship will be available on the Roku Channel. In addition to the live races,...

Exclusive: On Saturday, the frequencies of Fox Sports, Discovery, the BBC, ITV, and many other broadcasters will be tuned to the Empty Quarter in the Saudi Arabian desert. It’s a landscape that could be mistaken for Tatooine in the Star Wars universe, but come the weekend, it will be home to the most extreme motorsport event ever created, featuring a dazzling collection of drivers from racing worlds including Formula 1 and rallying.
Welcome to Extreme E, the brainchild of Formula E founder Alejandro Agag. The Spaniard wanted to double down on his electric motor racing fixture (now in its seventh season) with a new event that really revs the engines of his environmental message. Like a traveling circus, Extreme E will journey via a refitted cargo ship to four extreme locations around the globe over the course of 2021, staging races in geographies that highlight the increasingly brutal impact of climate change.

When asked about the founding of Formula E, a motorsport circuit that uses only electric cars, its current leader, a former Spanish politician named Alejandro Agag, lights a stogie and tells the unvarnished truth. Advertisers were starting to cool to Formula One for environmental reasons, and Agag admits that business incentivized the development of Formula E more than concern for the air that he’s filling with cigar smoke. The confession reflects the ethos of “And We Go Green,” a documentary about the series’ fourth year that presents itself as a planet-conscious endorsement of clean-energy technology, but is mostly about the brash personalities competing for the championship. It’s the type of engaging-but-shallow sports doc that pops up frequently on streaming services, which seem the finish lines it will ultimately cross.

Brazilian racecar driver Lucas di Grassi has announced his support for Un Environment’s work to reduce air pollution – the single biggest environmental health risk of our time.
“For me, it’s a lifetime achievement to be a part of the Un Environment Programme,” said di Grassi in Paris last week ahead of the 2018 Qatar Airways Paris E-Prix.
Among his many racing achievements, di Grassi is the reigning champion of Formula E – the auto racing series that uses only electric-powered cars. Helping to advance and promote zero-emissions mobility, Formula E acts as a testing ground for some of the world’s largest car manufacturers as they develop the electric cars of tomorrow.
But di Grassi is also an environmental entrepreneur in his own right.
